00:00Okay, so final place, point of attack, centre forward. I'm going to go with England's
00:13current captain, the man who led them in Euro 2020, the man who's going to lead them,
00:17hopefully, touch wood, in Euro 2024, Harry Kane. Again, I've spoken a lot about moments
00:25on this pod already, and I just think that some of the moments that he provided in that
00:31tournament will always be etched in my memory. The goal against Germany, obviously the semi-final,
00:39there were just so many, like I say, just flashpoints in that tournament where Harry
00:44Kane turned up, did what Harry Kane does, was there at the right place, right time,
00:50got the goal, dragged England through in that manner that we've become so accustomed to
00:54over the course of his career, and was just everything that you would want in a centre
00:59forward in a tournament. Obviously, he's scored four goals over the course of the tournament as
01:03a whole. You could maybe argue that he went missing a little bit in the final, but it's a
01:10very harsh criticism, I think. And ultimately, he was one of, if not the main men for England
01:17at that tournament. And I think given how far they went, given how close they came,
01:21and given the fact that, again, to use the Pickford argument, on another day, he could have
01:25been the first England captain to lift a major trophy since 1966, you know, I think it's really,
01:31really hard to look past Harry Kane and the contribution that he made at that tournament.
01:35But I have a very strong feeling that I know who you're going to plump for here, and so I'm going
01:41to give you the floor. Yeah, it's like, you know, that sort of the Top Gear meme that goes around
01:46the internet. It goes, this is great, but I like this, that one. This is great. That's Harry Kane.
01:52Alan Shearer is down there. And long-term viewers will know that anytime that, you know,
01:56Sunderland or England come up, Jason will go for Jordan Pickford because he's horribly biased.
02:00I'm a Blackburn Rovers fan. Whenever there is an opportunity for Alan Shearer to come up,
02:04I'm horribly biased and I pick him and I will refuse to allow him to not be in the squad under
02:08any circumstances. I mean, at least in this case, I've got a pretty good case because, you know,
02:12five goals and the Golden Boot at Euro 96, two more in the Euros history as well. So he's
02:17England's all-time top scorer at the Euros, a couple more in 2000. It's just, it's Alan Shearer.
02:23He's the best striker England has, well, ever had. You can have an argument in my opinion.
02:28Yeah, let's not, let's not go too wild, Mark.
02:33Anyway, he's still one of the all-time greats, let's be fair here. And he was brilliant in Euro
02:3896, you know, it wasn't, you know, a couple of penalties, a couple of really good goals,
02:43that goal against the Netherlands, I mean, just what a moment that was, like, what a finish as
02:46well, by the way. Just absolutely sort of cut across the ball like that and smash it into the
02:50top right-hand corner. It was really the technique involved in that I think is underrated, as he so
02:55often is with Shearer, because he usually absolutely spanned the ball and people forgot
02:58that he was also doing it in a very skilful manner. And yeah, the goal against Germany
03:02after what, three minutes, four minutes, whatever it was, you know, just that wonderful bit of
03:06movement and just finding half a yard of space, it's Shearer. He's just one of the greats. He's
03:11one of the best there's ever been. He's the best, you know, for me ever, because I'm horribly biased
03:16and because I basically go to sleep dressed in Alan Shearer pyjamas with my Alan Shearer duvet
03:21case. This isn't true, by the way, although I do have a signed photo of Alan Shearer.
03:25But like, it's Shearer. And like Harry Kane, yeah, brilliant, not scored as many goals as Shearer,
03:31also not won a major tournament. And so, you know, for me, I think if I let you have Jordan
03:36Pigford, I think this is where I've got to sort of buy my little hill to start, you know, to stand
03:40and die on. I'm picking Shearer. Yeah, I'll let you put your foot down here. I think the fact that
03:47you're just kind of boxing Veronica and stuff.
