00:00 Hi, I'm digital reporter Amy Seddon and today I'm reading you the latest news from across
00:06 the North West.
00:09 Plans for a new home bargain store in a Preston suburb will be decided upon by councillors
00:13 next week.
00:14 A discount retailer is eyeing vacant premises off Blackpool Road in Deepdale, which were
00:19 previously occupied by PC World.
00:21 That outlet is now contained within the Curry store in the next door unit.
00:26 Home Bargains, under its corporate name of TJ Morris Ltd, has applied for permission
00:30 to change the type of products permitted to be sold in the empty facility.
00:34 The firm has asked Preston City Council to allow up to 30% of the total floor space to
00:39 be given over to food and drink sales in order to enable the site, alongside the Deepdale
00:44 retail park, to operate as a Home Bargains branch.
00:47 The application will be decided by councillors on Preston City Council's cross-party planning
00:52 committee on June 6th.
00:56 An inquest has heard how a 50-year-old woman from Blackpool died after tragically falling
01:01 down the stairs at a Poulton restaurant.
01:04 Karen Theresa Taylor worked at a Poulton booth store and was a fit and healthy woman who
01:08 enjoyed running in her spare time.
01:11 On Friday, February 23rd, the 50-year-old, who lived on Burford Avenue in Blackpool,
01:16 was out for an evening meal with friends at an Indian restaurant named Dalvies in Poulton
01:20 Lafayette.
01:21 The inquest hearing heard Mrs Taylor and her friends were sitting on the second floor of
01:25 the restaurant to accommodate the larger size of their group, so Karen went to use the staircase
01:30 to use the bathroom.
01:31 This was when the tragedy struck, as after a few steps, she slipped and fell down the
01:36 stairs, sustaining major injuries.
01:39 Ambulance crews were called to the restaurant and Mrs Taylor was taken to the critical care
01:42 unit at Royal Preston Hospital for urgent treatment.
01:45 Sadly, she was unable to recover from her injuries and died in hospital the following
01:50 week on March 1st.
01:53 A dad of 22 children is accused of speeding and failing to identify the driver of a vehicle.
02:00 Noel Bradford, 53, of South Road, Morecambe, is charged with speeding on the Bay Gateway
02:05 at Torreshoe in a Porsche on November 6th last year.
02:09 He is also charged with failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver
02:13 of a Porsche at Preston on December 14th, 2023.
02:18 His case will be heard at Preston Magistrates Court today.
02:22 Burnley's Queen Vic restaurant could be set to close under plans that would see next door's
02:27 Premier Inn expand into the premises.
02:30 The Brewer's Fair establishment, located in Queen Victoria Road, has been a mainstay of
02:34 Burnley's hospitality scene for three decades.
02:38 Hospitality business Whitbread, which owns the Premier Inn and Brewer's Fair brands,
02:41 announced plans earlier this year to replace around 112 of their lower-returning branded
02:46 restaurants with integrated Premier Inn restaurants and hotel rooms.
02:50 A consultation period is ongoing, with the Queen Vic site currently still open and trading
02:55 as normal.
02:58 A team of older residents from Wigan and the wider region have launched an online bookshop
03:02 dedicated to the rich culture, music and history across Greater Manchester.
03:07 The online shop, which is part of a community news website run by volunteers aged 66 and
03:13 over, is called Talking About My Generation and currently features 20 titles from local
03:18 authors.
03:19 It was launched following a surging demand for the news platform's nostalgia and music
03:23 articles.
03:24 Book lover Joy Watson, a member of the Talking About My Generation team, said, "We're proud
03:30 Manx, Salfordians, Wiganers and everywhere in between, so we are buzzing to have a place
03:34 where we can celebrate our heritage and find loads of interesting books within this niche.
03:39 We're not quite Amazon yet, but where possible, we have tried to beat their price.
03:44 We hope people will support our bookshop.
03:46 All profits will fund our news team to continue their community reporting.
03:49 And we would love to hear from more authors who are mad for it and want to feature their
03:54 works in our shop."
03:56 And then for the weather, across all of Lancashire today it will remain dry and cloudy, but the
04:02 sun will peep through at odd times in the day.
04:05 Those will be highs of 19 degrees and lows of 11 degrees in the early hours of tomorrow.
