00:00Hello, OG! I'm Din. I'm Marvin. We're here in Amadeo Cavite.
00:05Welcome to our Japanese-inspired staycation house.
00:08Let's go inside.
00:21We are three business owners from high school batchmates turned into business partners.
00:28We're from different industries.
00:30I'm an architect by profession.
00:32Marvin is an engineer.
00:35Edward is from the financial industry.
00:39We got a little savings from our previous jobs.
00:44It's not that big.
00:46To continue our bonding, when they came to Tagaytay,
00:50we were offered something, not just for free.
00:53We aspired to have our own business.
00:56Which ended up materializing and we were able to start this deckhouse.
01:09Since this is where we always hang out,
01:12and we have a cafe on the other side of the deckhouse,
01:17this is an ideal lot.
01:19We're just making it a parking space.
01:22To generate income, we decided to make it a small private town.
01:30A personal town for the three of us when we're here in Tagaytay.
01:35They liked the good weather and the peacefulness.
01:39That's why we came up with this business.
01:46The idea was inspired by my previous trips to Japan.
01:50I'm a fan of architectural designs, especially residential houses.
01:55That's why we decided to come up with this.
02:03Our idea is a container van.
02:06But when we checked the container van,
02:09we were constrained by the dimensions and how big we can make it.
02:13So we came up with the idea of customizing it to build our own metal structure.
02:19We can build whatever we want.
02:22A big living room, bathroom, kitchen, ceiling, walls.
02:28So we ended up with a metal structure.
02:32We added insulation, fiber cement board.
02:35We still regulated the heat.
02:38We put in our natural ventilation.
02:41We put in our jalousie windows.
02:44We strategized where to put it.
02:47Where there are areas that need ventilation,
02:50or areas that need lighting.
02:54We used a twin wall for the partitions.
02:58I substituted it with a solid wall or hardy flex that has a closed inside.
03:04We were constrained by the natural light.
03:07So that became our strategy to cope up with this design.
03:15Actually, the size of the container van is only 3-4.
03:22Including the ceiling, it's only 3-4.
03:25So we decided that we can make a container van-like structure.
03:32But we wanted to follow the dimensions.
03:35So we customized it with a steel structure.
03:38We canvassed the suppliers of container vans,
03:41until transporting it here.
03:43The costing is almost the same.
03:46But we still prioritized the dimensions that we need for this structure.
04:00The lot size is 272 square meters.
04:03Our building is around 150 square meters.
04:07You can see the deck and the jacuzzi that we placed outdoors.
04:21The materials that we used here are lightweight.
04:24First, to make it cost-efficient.
04:27Second, because we want to put up the detachable.
04:31This is the structure that we made after we leased it.
04:37After our contract here, we can move it to the desired location.
04:44Or where we can get another location for this structure.
04:48So material-wise, we used steel structures inside.
04:54Then we cleaned it up with fiber cement board.
04:58To make it look like a container van, we used GI sheets.
05:03GI roofing, ribbed type.
05:05Then we painted it in two black colors.
05:15We have the living room area.
05:17Which has our sofa that can be converted into a sofa bed.
05:22When our guests become big groups, we have additional sleeping areas down here.
05:27Then we have a small kitchen counter, our nook.
05:31This is where we can prepare food and cook.
05:34Our guests are complete with the ref.
05:37We have rice cookers here, microwave, and all the necessary appliances that we need upstairs.
05:44We have two rooms.
05:45One room is our master's bedroom with pull-out bed.
05:49Then the other room is for the kids or family room that has two queen-size beds.
05:57We have a heated jacuzzi here outside that can accommodate up to six persons.
06:03Then we have the main feature of the structure, which is why it became a deckhouse,
06:08is the dining area.
06:09We have an outdoor dining area so that we can maximize the indoor-outdoor living.
06:21For me, the uniqueness of what we did to our property is
06:25that you can really see our personal preference.
06:28The simplicity of the design, the minimalism of the design.
06:32You can see the masculinity of the owners.
06:35I think that's what our guests liked.
06:48In terms of challenges, I think it's in the planning.
06:51Did we deal with a container van or a customized steel structure?
06:57Eventually, the result was good.
06:59During the construction, we were able to see the figures.
07:03That's where the budget constraint came out.
07:07But eventually, we were able to do it.
07:10The result is good.
07:12Our initial investment is around Php 500,000.
07:17We decided to chip in and build this.
07:22But there are hidden charges.
07:25When it comes to buying furniture, we reached around Php 1.8 million.
07:39What I really like here is the skylight I made in our common space.
07:44That became an architectural feature that I wanted the guests to see and experience.
07:52Look at this.
07:53This is our outdoor deck.
07:56This is where everything was inspired.
07:58This is where we started.
08:00The bonding.
08:01This is where the ideas were formed.
08:03And our future plans.
08:06Future plans for the property?
08:08Maybe we'll have a lap pool outside.
08:13Since our jacuzzi is small,
08:15so that the kids and friends will have something to play with.
08:20And maybe our teepee house outside.
08:23Additional accommodation.
08:26Our role in each one.
08:29Who's in operations, who's in marketing.
08:33We saw each one's strengths and weaknesses.
08:37So now, there's no more discussion.
08:39It's your job.
08:41That's what we learned.
08:43Eventually, when we grew up, we knew what each one needed.
08:48And that's how we started.
08:51Eventually, when we grew up, we knew what each one needed.
08:56Aside from the construction, it's a different phase.
09:00It's a different phase in operations.
09:03We got each one's formula.
09:06And we got to know each one better.
09:10To those like us who are still young, don't be afraid.
09:14Let's take a risk.
09:16Maybe if you have the means, take the risk.
09:20You won't regret it.
09:22And you will learn throughout the process.
09:25For me personally, the first thing I considered
09:28when starting a business,
09:32if it's a business, I'll enjoy it.
09:35If it's a business, I'll enjoy it.
09:38If it's a business, I'll enjoy it.
09:40Because from start up until you achieve your goals,
09:45there's stress, there's pressure.
09:47But the enjoyment, even if you're pressured,
09:50even if you're stressed,
09:51that's what you can't buy.
09:54You won't be able to forgive your sacrifices
09:58and the business you built.
10:00Thank you.
