Welcome to another episode of Unique Homes where we feature tiny houses, farmhouses, modern bahay kubo, and everything in between. Because we know — you can’t stop looking into other people’s homes for inspiration.
____
Naga City — Homeowners, Renato and Susan De Vera, show us around this tranquil farm compound that takes its cues from its natural surroundings.
Like the typical modern farmhouses these days, you're probably expecting some traditional materials or decorative concrete that delivers some aesthetic purpose. That's what the homeowners hoped for as well for this retirement home in the province. But the property is nestled in a naturally sheltered area without sturdy trees to protect the house from typhoons; so it is what it is. A practical structure.
Be that as it may, with its green and serene outdoor spaces, the property leaves anyone little reason to stay indoors.
Explore the property — and take some insights about planning for a retirement home.

00:00Hello, OG! Welcome to S&R Rendezvous Farm!
00:15Hello, OG! Good morning!
00:17We are now here at S&R Rendezvous Farm.
00:21I will show you around our simple house.
00:25Come on in!
00:28This is our living room.
00:30As you can see, I have a lot of plants.
00:34I love plants.
00:36Plus, the other memorabilia of my husband.
00:40I chose the other ones.
00:42I still have them.
00:44This is just next to it.
00:46The house is small.
00:48This is our kitchen.
00:58The pandemic started in 2020.
01:02We realized that while we have a house and a condo in Manila,
01:07Bukay Provincia is still the best.
01:11Actually, I'm from Naga City.
01:14My wife is from Oas, Albay.
01:16This is where we decided to look for our retirement place.
01:25We don't have any properties here in Naga City or Bicol.
01:33Originally, our plan was simple.
01:37I was thinking about the materials.
01:41The roof is made of wood.
01:49It's like a house.
01:52But when we moved to this place,
01:54it's really open.
01:56There are no trees growing.
02:01There's no wind.
02:05If a strong storm comes here,
02:09I can't handle it.
02:13So, we decided to have a farmhouse that's stable.
02:20So that the super typhoons can withstand.
02:23One of the first things my wife and I did
02:27while we were constructing this place,
02:29we planted a lot of plants.
02:31She planted plants.
02:33I planted trees.
02:35Now, the vegetables we get here are
02:39sweet potatoes,
02:41water spinach,
02:43malunggay leaves,
02:45alugbate leaves,
02:47if you're familiar with it.
02:50This is the place where we put our food.
02:59So that it's close to our table.
03:03We have a room here.
03:10This is our kitchen.
03:15These are what we harvested from the farm.
03:21From the chicken.
03:23We have eggs.
03:25This is my kitchen.
03:27I like it like this.
03:29It's open.
03:31You can see the view from the outside.
03:37This is our public bathroom.
03:42This is our women's bathroom.
03:44And this is the men's bathroom.
03:46But this is the men's bathroom.
03:48I have a lot of plants.
03:50During the pandemic,
03:52when we were here,
03:54I didn't do anything.
03:56I just separated the plants.
03:58But now, I have a lot of plants.
04:00This is my favorite place in the veranda.
04:04Sometimes, I sit here.
04:12This location,
04:14although it's on a farm,
04:16but it's close to the city.
04:18That's why the price here is a bit high.
04:22I got this at P700 per square meter.
04:27Although it's an installment.
04:29This is half a hectare.
04:31Originally, it's 5,000 square meters.
04:34That would be P3.5 million.
04:37Now, it's 1 hectare.
04:40My neighbors sold it to me.
04:42And it's okay for me
04:44because the neighbors
04:46who sold it to me,
04:48I made my farm animals there.
04:52So, I put chicken, turkey, cows.
04:57So, it's getting bigger and bigger.
05:05Do you know why this pond is here?
05:08My husband used to stay here
05:10when we were building our farmhouse.
05:12We were here for 6 months
05:14while he was building it.
05:16The other pond that we're talking about,
05:18because there are two of them,
05:20we put them in front of each other.
05:22Because our stuff doesn't fit there.
05:24That's why we put it there.
05:26In the middle, there are bricks.
05:28There are a lot of bricks.
05:30It's spreading now.
05:32There's a space in the middle
05:34where we have a table and a stove.
05:37The two ponds are facing each other.
05:42Our house pond serves a purpose.
05:45It's fast.
05:47The materials are bamboo.
05:49Bamboo,
05:51wood,
05:53but we made it made-to-order.
05:55So, we just ordered it.
05:57If it's made-to-order,
05:59it's a bit expensive.
06:01If you make it,
06:03you'll get a discount.
06:07I feel better
06:09here in the province
06:11because it's quiet
06:13and the surroundings are beautiful.
06:15We're happy that
06:17even the birds
06:19find our farmhouse
06:21a conducive place
06:23for them to build
06:25their own home also.
06:27Although there are only two of us,
06:29but our son is here
06:31and we're here with him.
06:33We built it
06:36using another infrastructure.
06:44It's about 200 square meters
06:46and it's made of concrete.
06:48So, we decided to use concrete.
06:50The flooring is tiles.
06:54The roof is a long span.
06:56We put it here
06:58to withstand
07:00the strong typhoons.
07:02We spent
07:04more or less P2M
07:06for the entire house.
07:13My advice
07:15that I can give
07:17and it came from my wife
07:19is to plan ahead.
07:21We planned ahead
07:23but our planning
07:25before I retired
07:27took only two years.
07:29But for others,
07:31my advice is to
07:33plan ahead.
07:35Because the time will come
07:37when you will retire.
07:39Do not wait for the time
07:41that you are already retired
07:43and think,
07:45what will I do?
