Transcript
00:00 We're with Jordan Davis who just won Song of the Year for Next Thing You Know.
00:05 And not only does he get one trophy, he gets two as songwriter and performer.
00:11 Yeah.
00:12 So how's that feel to win two awards for the single effort?
00:16 I'm blown away.
00:18 I grew up like vividly remember sitting on the couch with my mom, my dad, my brother,
00:24 my sister and watching this award show and we always look forward to this award.
00:29 And I'm going to stop talking about it because it'll get me.
00:32 But I remember like I just, you know, it's just special.
00:37 And I just never thought in a million years that I would be doing this.
00:42 And it's pretty awesome.
00:45 You're one of those artists that to me considers himself a songwriter first and foremost.
00:50 So what does that mean to you?
00:52 And who is a songwriter that you wish you could call from that you loved growing up and say,
00:58 guess what, I won this award.
01:00 Well, I never got a chance to meet him.
01:03 But I mean, I got into songwriting because of John Prine.
01:06 And I know that our styles are a little different, but I approach songwriting like I feel like
01:15 John Prine approached it.
01:16 So I'm kicking myself.
01:19 I should have pushed to meet him a little more than I did.
01:23 But I just think he's the best ever do it.
01:26 So it'll be it'll be prime.
01:29 OK, I'm hearing it only took 90 minutes to write this song.
01:32 It wasn't long.
01:34 It wasn't long.
01:35 I think that, you know, and I'll say this, too, about the guys that I wrote this with.
01:42 We could have taken this a different way, an easier way to write it.
01:46 And man, they I told him I wanted to do it this way and they didn't blink an eye at it.
01:54 And I'm grateful that they did that because now we're here.
01:57 What would have been easier than 90 minutes?
02:00 Well, I think that the theme of it, you know, we were going to write it a different, you
02:07 know, this song doesn't have a chorus that repeats.
02:09 We kind of broke some rules in writing this, but we but they they didn't bat an eye at
02:15 it.
02:15 And and what's so cool is like now I'm looking at one of them and and now we get to share
02:21 this moment forever because we have an ACM song of the year together.
02:26 And no one can take that away from you.
02:28 This song does talk about life's milestones, which is something that you see.
02:33 I mean, by dirt, you know, looks at that.
02:36 Why do you think that resonates with people so much?
02:38 You know, I mean, I think it's it's honesty to me.
02:42 I was always drawn to the honest songwriters.
02:47 I think that's why I'm trying to grab me and hook me in.
02:50 So I've always tried to write that, you know, how can I relate to the guy that's singing
02:54 those words?
02:55 And I think that's why next thing in songs like dirt, you know, connect the way they
03:01 do.
03:01 But I love dirt and I wrote it with my brother and two of my best friends.
03:05 But man, do I love next thing you know, it's like picking your favorite kid.
03:09 You know, you have a CMA by dirt and you've got an ACM.
03:14 I mean, just blessed, man, just blessed.
03:17 And my last question to you is you just had your seventh number one on our country air
03:21 play chart with your son too late.
03:22 How does it feel?
03:24 What a week.
03:24 What a daggum week.
03:27 Goodness gracious.
03:28 I don't deserve a second of it, but I am I am I'm just blessed.
03:34 I'm sorry I cut you off.
03:35 No, I'm just like, how do you even absorb all that?
03:38 You have the number one song.
03:40 I mean, you have two awards in your hand.
03:42 Like, how do you even take all that in?
03:44 I mean, I wish I could.
03:45 I wish I could name the team that the people behind that that helped that happen.
03:52 It's not just me.
03:54 It's the writers.
03:54 It's management.
03:57 It's label.
03:58 It's publicist.
04:00 It's everybody in the world that wake up every day and put my career first in their life.
04:05 And and I can't thank them enough.
04:07 So it's just I'm I'm I'm blessed to be with the people I'm with.
04:13 Last question, how are you going to celebrate?
04:15 A lot of tequila.
04:16 I need to call mama.
04:18 I need to call my mom first and then and then I'm going to drink some tequila.
04:23 I am going to come find you and get into a shot.
04:26 Come on, let's do it.
