Mattel Masters Of The Universe Cartoon Collection Mer-Man Figure
Transcript
00:00 Sure, yeah, he'd be a threat underwater, but if only you could understand him.
00:03 Here's a look at the Mattel He-Man and Massey Universe cartoon collection,
00:07 Merman, Ocean Warlord.
00:10 It's an exciting time to be a Massey Universe fan. For longtime fans and for
00:28 new generation of kids who love action and adventure, it's time to experience the
00:31 thrilling action and adventure of He-Man, Skeletor, The Secrets of Castle
00:34 Grayskull, and much more. The figures in this collection stand 5.5 inches tall
00:38 and have 15 movable joints, so they're highly poseable for imaginative and
00:42 action-oriented fun. Merman may have had his fair share of rocky relationships,
00:47 but he knows there's plenty more fish in the sea. Just before, of course, we get a
00:50 closer look at the new cartoon collection, Merman, the tape measure is gonna tell us
00:54 that the figure stands at 6 inches in height, or Merman's gonna be 15
00:58 centimeters tall. I think we can all agree that this is the most Merman-y
01:01 looking Merman we've gotten from the toy line so far. What? Here's a couple of
01:05 comparisons. First of all, obviously, here's what the figure looks like with the
01:08 original Origins Merman. Not at all looking like the Merman we got from the
01:11 Filmation series. Predating that, though, in fact, although this figure came out a
01:15 little bit later after the Origins version of Merman, here's what the figure
01:18 looks like as well with the Lords of Power Merman. The original head sculpt, as
01:22 you can see, looks a little closer to the cartoon, although it's still not quite
01:26 right. A couple of cartoon collection figures, so of course here's what he
01:29 looks like with Skeletor, Beastman off to the side here as well, and Trapjaw, a
01:33 figure that in his review his jaw was so tight that I couldn't even get it to
01:37 move, but the fact that the jaw does open and close is also a nice touch that they
01:40 included. And that's not the end, of course, of my Merman collection, just off
01:44 to the back here, because he's the biggest of the batch, here's what the
01:46 figure looks like as well with the Revelations Merman. Comics? I got your
01:51 comics right here. Mini comic to come included, though, with Merman. You get
01:54 yourself one entitled "Perilous Power," a comic that will come back when we look at
01:57 Stratos a little bit later. Funny, though, I did actually get both these figures at
02:01 Entertainment Earth, but unfortunately the site didn't list them sold
02:04 separately. They were on pre-orders, so I had to get myself a case. The case
02:08 basically just meant that I got myself a secondary Merman that I'll keep still
02:11 sealed in card. I also got myself, as well, a sealed Triclops from the original
02:15 Mass Euse, although it was the fan collection, but still part of the
02:18 original Origins, so I'm just gonna be putting those on my wall a little bit
02:20 later. Though, going back to the comic, "Perilous Power" features, though, the two
02:24 predominant characters from the cartoon collection, Stratos being the bottom
02:27 corner, the front and center one being Merman. The Merman, by the way, does
02:32 also come included with the Pearl of Power, something that's also featured
02:36 here on the front of the comic. Advertised on the back, by the way, Teal
02:39 and Trapdraw, two cartoon collection figures we've already had a look at.
02:42 Wait, you had a look at those two figures? How did I miss that? I don't know how you
02:46 missed it, but you can also go back. You can almost go back. Going flipping
02:49 through this comic quickly, the artwork, again, is really good on all of these. The
02:53 thing I like also about them is the fact that the minicomics have them
02:55 specifically designed the way that they look in the Affilmation series, so what
02:59 you liked so much about Merman in the original cartoon, you'll also like
03:03 the way he looks inside the comic, and he's battling Stratos. It's funny, though,
03:07 that advertised on the back is also Teal and Trapdraw, but they don't come with
03:11 the exact same comic. They came included with a different one instead. I'm gonna move
03:14 that off to the side. Something that will be going into the recycling shortly is
03:18 also the paper inserts. The paper insert is just there, once again, not only just
03:22 to waste resources, but also tell you that the head, the shoulders, the lower
03:26 torso, and the booties can all be popped and swapped off with other figures as
03:30 well. You can do that, too. Going back, though, to the Pearl of Power, the figure
03:35 comes included with this from, I believe, City Beneath the Sea. It's, in fact,
03:38 actually listed on the back of the packaging. It's a little underwhelming. I
03:42 mean, obviously, if you were to go, say, to a craft store, you probably could pick
03:45 up a pearl or something like a marble and do the exact same thing as what I'm
03:49 doing right now. It's maybe not as heavy as a marble. Marbles tend to be more of
03:53 glass. This is actually all done in plastic, but it's not
03:56 the most interesting thing to have a look at, and unfortunately, though, it
03:59 really doesn't have a proper means of store in his hand, either. He has one
04:03 gripping hand, which is gonna be doing absolutely nothing when it comes to
04:05 holding the pearl, but he does, though, have a relaxed hand. You can take
04:09 yourself the Pearl of Power, and it fits into his hand, although it doesn't fit in
04:13 a way that you'd be able to tip the figure upside down. I mean, tipping it
04:15 any bit away like this, you're just gonna notice that the ball is gonna roll away,
04:18 probably onto the floor. Grab it quickly. My cats grab things so quick. If I just
04:23 take a few moments, and I think to myself, "I'm gonna grab it a little bit
04:26 later. I'm gonna grab it a little bit later." By that point, the cat has already
04:29 decided it wants to steal it, and it's gonna take it to a place I'm never gonna
04:32 be able to find. Anyways, the Pearl of Power is one thing, at least from a
04:37 cartoon standpoint. It was referenced in the episode, so I guess it's okay that
04:41 they included a pearl, but I just think it's sort of, again, very
04:44 underwhelming. It kind of falls within that category. There was one other figure
04:47 that we also had a look at. I can't remember which one it was. It came with a
04:51 pretty underwhelming accessory. Was it Beastman? Maybe it was Beastman. It was
04:57 probably Beastman. Gonna move that off to the side, though. What's a little bit
04:59 more interesting, though, is that the figure comes also included with his trident.
05:02 This is all molded here. Not the softest of plastics, but, you know, again, a nice
05:06 little silver plastic piece that he comes included with. Has the prongs on
05:10 the end there as well, so he can fork. I mean, if you are ones like to eat things
05:14 with forks, I mean, obviously, you know, if you have a soup, soup might be the
05:18 hardest thing to eat, unless they're also chunky soup. Remember the debate back in
05:22 the 80s? The soup that eats like a meal was, do you eat it with a fork or a
05:25 spoon? Who's ever gonna really eat soup with a fork? I ask you that question.
05:29 Anyways, it does fit into his hand, though. It fits only in this hand here. Clips in
05:33 place and stays well in place. You can also, as well, bring the trident around,
05:37 and it sort of, as they indicate on the back, I think, of the packaging, you can
05:40 also put it in his hand like this. I mean, that's not really gonna be doing much of
05:43 anything. Let's remove the trident and put it off to the side. I tell you, I really like
05:47 this figure, except for one thing. I think the color is a little bit off. In the
05:50 cartoon, it comes across a little bit more like a teal color.
05:53 Unfortunately, though, Mattel decide, for reasons unknown, just to mold the entire
05:56 figure in sort of this pastel baby blue. They should have really added a little
06:01 bit of green to this, making a little bit more of a teal color. Other than that,
06:04 though, I think the face sculpt is really good on this one. And if you are a big
06:08 fan of the way that Merman looks in the series, voiced by Alan Oppenheimer, who
06:12 also, funny enough, voiced Sea Spray in the Transformers animated series,
06:16 Transformers original G1 series. He had, apparently, a typecasted thing where he
06:20 always had to come in and play, do the voices of Ocean Master characters, Ocean
06:24 characters. Sea Spray turning into, again, that little, what was it, like a hover
06:28 ship, a hovercraft. And, of course, Merman. Merman, I think, was my favorite of the
06:33 Oppenheimer Ocean-related characters. Although the voices were very similar to
06:37 one another. Face sculpt-wise, it's really good. I like the fact that, even for the
06:41 small, as small as the teeth may be, they look like they're pretty well painted. It
06:45 doesn't look like the teeth, or the white, at least, of the teeth, have hung on or
06:49 bled on to any other areas around the face. I like the colors of the way they've
06:53 also colored the orange around the eyes. And his little beady eyes also stand out
06:57 really well in the figure. The fins aren't the most cartoon accurate, but I
07:01 can live with that. I think the biggest thing that really I take away from all
07:04 this figure is more so just the fact that the colors of the blue aren't quite
07:07 100% correct. Kind of my same feelings of Beastman. So, just bring in
07:11 Beastman here for a second. Beastman wasn't quite the same color as he is in
07:15 the cartoon series as well, so they took a little bit of color liberties, but I
07:18 think the colors are still pretty good on it. Merman does have, of course, the
07:21 armor. Now, the way the armor attaches on to the back of the figure's body, instead
07:25 of actually snapping in place, these just loop over. You can see there's a little
07:28 tab piece here. The thing about it, though, is once you do this a couple of times,
07:32 I'm only gonna do this the two times that I've done it so far. One for this
07:36 one review and one just before this, before I actually hit the record. I'm not
07:39 gonna do it any time after that, just because they don't really stay well, and
07:43 the more times you do it, the harder these these armor pieces stay in place.
07:46 The colors for his arms. Now, here's also one of the things, too. The armor piece is
07:51 molded in yellow plastic, right? The hands clearly seem to be also molded
07:55 in yellow plastic, right? Yeah. Unfortunately, though, the part of the
07:59 top of the glove clearly looks to be painted rather than actually molding
08:02 plastic, so unfortunately the yellow here is the only place that doesn't quite
08:06 jive with the color of the hand or the color of the armor. It's the only other
08:09 thing that's a little off here on Merman. He has the lower trunks here, or the
08:12 lower loincloth here, molded here in orange plastic. There's no additional
08:16 paint added there as well, and for his lower boots, they are at least molded
08:19 here in yellow plastic, so the colors at least are gonna match that of the glove
08:22 and gonna match, again, his armor. I don't know why I'm moving my fingers so much
08:26 in front of the review. For the figures articulation, pretty much standard. If
08:30 you're already collecting Master Universe Origins figures, or for that
08:33 matter, the extension, the cartoon collection, then you already know by now
08:37 what's gonna go along with the territory of articulation. The figure's gonna have
08:40 a ball joint, so like if you want to take the head off, for example, just pop that
08:43 off, replace it with whatever, you know, if you want to swap. I guess if
08:47 customizers make better use of the idea of swapping, mixing, matching parts, I
08:51 mean, if you're just collecting the cartoon collection, or really any
08:53 Master's Mo2 Origins figures, you're probably never even gonna take the parts
08:57 and limbs off anyways, but anyways, the head is gonna be on a ball joint, so it
09:00 rotates all the way around. It does look down, yes, it does look up, sure, and it
09:04 also could move back and forth. Because he does have the fins on the sides, it's a
09:07 little harder for him to get that head pivot back and forth, but it still
09:10 manages to do that. Arms come out easily, even though he does have the little
09:14 fins there on the tops for his shoulders. These are all softer plastic, by the way.
09:17 You can move the arms forward, you can move them back, and because of already
09:21 mentioning the fins, you already know that you can't really rotate the arm all
09:24 the way around. It just isn't gonna cut it. The figure doesn't have a bicep
09:28 swivel, sadly, but what he does have instead is a swivel in his forearm. There's an
09:32 angle pivot there, an angle rocker, what am I talking about here, an elbow hinge
09:36 joint there, where you can bend the arm. You can rotate the hand also as well, and
09:40 hinge that back and forth. He has a waist swivel, it's nice and tight, which is,
09:44 luckily, I'm glad to see that. There's a couple of, I think, was it the
09:47 skeletor? I think the skeletor is a little loose on the waist. Legs split out,
09:51 they're on ball joints. You can take the legs and move forward, sure, move them
09:54 back, why not? There's a little swivel there at the top of the thigh, single
09:57 hinge again, only on the knee. Ah, this is the one thing that's loose on the figure
10:00 of mine, is this knee here. Reasons unknown, I don't know, but I can tell you
10:04 like this knee is a little tighter. Does anybody really care? Nobody really cares.
10:07 This part, by the way, is also a separate piece, so because of that, it also grants
10:12 itself a little bit of additional postability. The ankle does move back
10:15 and forth. You also can rock it back and forth this way as well, and
10:18 all the figures seem to have so far peggles in the undersides of their feet.
10:21 Merman was the figure I was really the most interested in getting. Merman, I've
10:25 always really liked the design of him, although he is, again, really hard to
10:27 understand. It basically just sounded like Alan was always talking the role with
10:30 marbles in his mouth. Speaking of marbles, I'm segwaying myself over to the idea
10:35 that the figure comes included, again, with the Pearl of Power. Even if you
10:38 liked City Beneath the Sea, I just don't think that it's a necessary accessory. I
10:43 mean, again, I guess if being a thrown-in episode referenced accessory isn't a bad
10:47 thing, but I just think like the Pearl of Power, I don't know, I think they probably
10:51 could have picked something better. At least the figure comes
10:53 included with his trident, which is one thing I'm gonna be displaying with the
10:56 figure. For the likelihood of this falling onto the floor, for the likelihood
10:59 of me wasting the time not to pick it up right away, and for my cat probably
11:02 chasing this away where it's just gonna be disappearing. I don't even know where.
11:06 Probably gonna be under a couch. That's probably where all the stuff that my
11:09 little kitty seems to be stealing. That's probably where the Pearl of Power is
11:12 gonna end up. Bringing back in a couple of other figures also as well. All the
11:15 cartoon collection at least. Skeletor, Beastman on either side, and of course
11:19 can't forget the Triclops. Loving this line. Loving this line so far. The thing
11:22 about it though is one thing, I'm just gonna move the figures right over here,
11:25 at least the cartoon collection, bringing back in the original Merman from the
11:29 Origins line. I mean, one thing I did mention in the earlier reviews that I'll
11:32 mention again here in this review, is that they've obviously given them brand
11:35 new bodies, except for the female figures. For all reasons, again, unknown,
11:39 Tila was using just again the Master Universe Origins body, which again I
11:43 really think a missed, I mean just a really missed error on Mattel's part.
11:47 Not just to design brand new bodies for the female figures as well, because
11:50 obviously the scale is gonna be way off, but if you're looking to scale these,
11:54 you'll notice right away that the cartoon collection are gonna be notably
11:57 taller than the Origins figures. If that's not a bad thing for you, or if that's not
12:00 a problem for you at least, it's a great line so far. And again, Master
12:04 Universe for the cartoon collection, the one I was the most interested in was
12:07 getting Merman. A little late on this, but when finally the listing went up online
12:12 over at Entertainment Earth, which again I unfortunately had to get myself an
12:15 entire case of them. No harm, no foul, just basically means I have another one of
12:18 these sitting sealed inside a card. I just ended up having to pick it up that
12:22 way, and I think I ended up ultimately paying probably like $75 to get the case,
12:26 and that's the case they included. The Merman came included also with the
12:29 cartoon collection Stratos, and then another version of another Merman, I
12:33 should say, and the fan fan collection. I think that's what they're calling the
12:36 cartoon fan collection. Fan collection, Master Universe, Origins, Triclops, which
12:40 again is a figure I ultimately would have gone back and tried to get one
12:43 unsealed. So again, no harm, no foul. Nice-looking Merman though. The only thing
12:47 I would say though is that the colors aren't quite jiving when it comes to the
12:50 tops of his gloves. I mean obviously they clearly have painted that piece where
12:53 all the things in around it that are yellow are all molded in yellow plastic.
12:56 And again, the one other thing though is while maybe this Merman isn't quite the
13:00 same colors as the cartoon either, he's a little closer in colors that I wish
13:05 that this Merman was a little bit more closer to teal, not the baby blue we
13:08 got instead. Stocking anything new in the way of Master Universe here in Canada is
13:13 just a myth. It's an urban legend. It doesn't exist. I mean I don't know if the
13:16 re-buyers are just looking at the shelves and thinking, "Well hey, we keep
13:19 going back and dusting off the Revelation faker. If nobody clearly is
13:22 buying this, then what hope do we have at all to restock anything new because
13:26 collectors aren't gonna be getting them?" So there's always of course the option
13:30 of going on to eBay, but then each of the individual cartoon collection figures
13:33 I've been looking at for a while now, Merman has been sitting at around $40 to
13:36 $50. I didn't want to pay that at all. In fact, I just recently went to Florida. I
13:41 went to take my daughter to Disney World and I thought, "Hey, while we're there, a
13:45 little bit of time to kill, why don't I check out a local Target? See what a
13:49 Super Walmart is all about?" Apparently that's a thing in the US as well and I
13:53 was hoping, if anything, even though I didn't have a lot of luggage space, most
13:56 of this luggage space was already being occupied by souvenirs I picked up at
13:59 Disney, but I was hoping in the off chance I could walk down the aisle and
14:02 be blinded by all the light shining off the glorious Master Universe Origins
14:07 collection packaging, but not the case. I went down the aisle and
14:10 the pegs were just as empty as they were here in Canada, so it doesn't
14:14 seem to be just a problem here in Canada. Master Universe distribution seems to
14:18 suck in a lot of places. Now obviously that's not gonna be the case with
14:22 everybody because I know there's a lot of reviewers out there that have already
14:24 had the chance to have a look at the cartoon collection Merman and to wait a
14:27 little longer. Finally this guy did get stocked at Entertainment Earth, probably
14:30 not the most ideal way that he was stocked because you couldn't get the
14:33 individual figures, but they did have a case set available which basically
14:37 usually means that they just throw in an extra figure. You know one figure kind of
14:41 gets a quantity of two and then you get the other figures that go along with it.
14:44 So getting a case of four basically meant two cartoon collection Mermans, not
14:47 a bad thing at all, cartoon collection Stratos, and a fan
14:51 collection or is it fan favorites? I think it's fan favorites Master Universe
14:55 Origins Triclops. The Triclops and the Merman are just gonna already be
14:59 on my shelf as we speak. I'm gonna keep those sealed. I like the
15:02 look of Merman so much I don't mind having another one sealed. So if you guys
15:05 are interested and haven't had any luck whatsoever finding these in the
15:09 wild, you can again click the link down below. They'll take you over to
15:13 Entertainment Earth. That same link by the way will also save you 10% on
15:16 anything that's currently in stock and they also of course offer free shipping
15:19 over $75. Going though back to Merman, while the colors aren't 100% cartoon
15:24 accurate, do wish that they could have been teal instead of the blue that they
15:27 used. The blue for what it is does look nice. The figure is colored very brightly.
15:31 Merman should be a very brightly colored figure. He isn't as good maybe as the
15:35 Super 7 Filmation series Merman, but you know again talking about crazy stupid
15:39 prices, I'm not paying like $100 for a Filmation version of him from Super 7.
15:44 Good-looking figure but I think I'm rather just happy to be paying... well I
15:48 paid for what I got of this guy at a much better price. I'm happy with at least
15:52 collecting the stuff that we're getting from Mattel. Mattel at least by filling
15:55 the void in means that as a new time collector of these Motu figures that you
16:00 don't have to go the route of eBay. You don't have to go the route of paying the
16:03 ludicrous prices to now go back and get the old back stock of stuff
16:08 that we got from Super 7. Instead we're getting pretty good-looking cartoon
16:11 characters. Merman is pretty high on my list. I think still him, Beastman, I'd
16:15 really like to say Tila but like the scaling on Tila is still way off. I'm
16:19 gonna probably talk about that in one of the upcoming reviews when we look at
16:22 Evil Lin. Evil Lin I think is still using the same body but I like the
16:26 look of Merman. He probably is my top three top three favorite of the
16:30 cartoon collection figures that we've gotten so far. He's a nice-looking figure.
16:33 I just probably don't have any plans of displaying him at all with the marble
16:36 just because again like the Pearl of Power while being yes a episode
16:40 specific accessory just isn't gonna work when it comes to displaying this guy
16:43 because the moment that thing falls out of his hand it's gone. I'm gonna turn
16:46 around and the cat's gonna go and it's gonna be gone with that pearl. I'm never
16:50 gonna find it again so I'm probably just gonna put it back in the bag with all
16:53 the other things that I haven't displayed yet with the figures and I'm
16:56 just gonna display him with the Trident. Nice-looking figure overall though I'm
16:59 glad that I finally got the chance to get Merman. It's that one figure
17:02 I've really wanted from the cartoon collection and I think short of the
17:05 colors he delivered exactly what I would have wanted. What do you guys think of
17:08 Merman? Let me know down below in the comment section. Also let me know down
17:11 below whereabouts you guys are located and how plentiful is Masters of the
17:16 Universe? Are you a dry barren wasteland as well? Empty pegs galore? Or do you have
17:21 them as far as the eye can see? You can rub it in it's okay. Let me know down
17:25 below in the comment section. If you guys in the meantime did enjoy this video I
17:28 want to throw it a like. If you guys are loving the content you guys are seeing
17:30 and want to be on board for that review of Stratos it's gonna be right around
17:33 the corner by the way making sure that you're hitting that subscribe button
17:35 down below is crucial. I mean it's obviously a very important thing but
17:39 turning on the bell notification I know may all not always seem like it's a big
17:42 important thing like it's not muy importante it is importante. You want to
17:46 make sure you're hitting that as well so you're gonna get the reminders from
17:48 YouTube every single time the person behind the camera is posting new
17:52 something new. As always guys thanks for watching see you guys next time!
17:58 you
