00:00 A martial arts icon gets forever immortalized in resin.
00:04 Here's a look at the brand new Star Ace Bruce Lee 1/6 scale polyresin collectible statue.
00:09 [music]
00:31 From Star Ace Toys, Bruce Lee was the premier motion picture martial artist,
00:35 inventing his own style of kung fu and popularizing it around the world.
00:38 This 1/6 scale statue of Lee depicts him in the way of the dragon and features a realistic fabric costume.
00:43 Lee stands in his classic fighting stance with nunchaku at the ready.
00:47 This deluxe version of the statue also includes a light-up diorama base.
00:51 Just before we follow the way of the dragon, let's grab the tape measure and see how tall the brand new Bruce Lee deluxe statue stands.
00:57 I'd like to as well thank the folks over at Star Ace that were kind enough to provide this sample we can have a look at.
01:01 Depending which direction you'd like to go to get your hands on this, you can either go with the standard release or the collector's edition.
01:07 The collector's edition here, at least in Canadian prices, is about $520, but it will include as well a light-up base.
01:13 The statue of Lee stands exactly 12 inches in height, or the statue is 30 centimeters tall.
01:19 Included along with Lee, you get the following things.
01:21 First, a front placard that features Bruce Lee as well as the way of the dragon.
01:25 While the front is plastic, painted very nicely outlined here in white, the back is felt.
01:30 One thing with mine is that there's a little bubble right there just by the way that they adhered this.
01:35 I'm going to see if I can try to take this out, although to be honest, you're never really going to see it anyways.
01:39 It's only going to be facing from the front.
01:41 This does nicely go on the front of the display stand like this.
01:44 I mean, really being the fact that this is also a separate piece, you can also have it on the side there as well.
01:48 He does also come included with his nunchaku, or nunchuck if you prefer.
01:52 This is actually going to be holstered or held in his hand on one side and then tucked underneath his arm and his torso.
01:58 I'm going to get to more of that in a moment.
02:00 And then the last thing that it also comes included with is a power cable.
02:03 This is the collector's edition, so what it will do is this is going to plug onto the side of the display base and illuminate brightly here in red.
02:09 The thing unfortunately about it though is it's charged by USB, which isn't necessarily a bad thing at all.
02:14 Everything now usually is USB enabled.
02:16 The thing about it, unfortunately, though, is it doesn't come included with a plug.
02:19 So if you are one that still likes to plug things into a wall, unless you have a wall plug that already has the USB plugs available,
02:25 you're going to have to definitely get yourself a plug that goes on the end of it.
02:28 Because where I'm working right now, I'm going to get myself though a plug that's going to attach onto the end of this.
02:32 I'll plug this though in a moment so you guys can see how brightly that illuminates.
02:35 Taking only a few moments to take Bruce Lee off his display stand so we can get a closer look at it.
02:40 While Bruce Lee though is polyresin, the display stand isn't. It's plastic.
02:44 Fairly weighted too, of course, because it has to have all the electronics built into it.
02:47 If we flip the statue though upside down, at least the display base, we have both the deluxe version there as well as the signature for Bruce Lee
02:53 and indicating that this is the way of the Dragon release.
02:56 There is rubberized feet. Normally I would have said on the corners of the square, but being that we have a perfect circle,
03:01 they're in somewhat the corners of that to prevent scratching on surfaces.
03:04 And you also as well have the Star Race logo there down below.
03:07 If we look at it to the side though, there is of course the plug that's going to accommodate the cable.
03:11 Now in preparation of this, I've already taken the liberty of taking the USB cable and taking it and plugging it into an actual plug.
03:17 Here's the live end of the cable right now. We're going to plug this in place.
03:20 One thing though about this is that there's no on and off switch.
03:23 The moment you take this and you plug it in, the moment you actually in fact see that it makes connection is the time that this illuminates.
03:30 And it illuminates fairly bright.
03:32 The thing I like also about this is while obviously the Dragon is all part of the red plastic that's on this,
03:37 the part that they've actually put over top of it as the stencil is raised.
03:41 It's not just printed in place. So there's some additional 3D look to it.
03:44 And it does have a very brightly illuminated Dragon.
03:47 You know, though looking at this, I do wish there was a switch or something on the side.
03:50 Because if you're one that likes to have your statues always on display without always having then to plug this in all the time,
03:56 had they had just a switch, had they had a little button, for example, you could turn it on and off.
04:01 So if you never wanted to always have it illuminated, obviously, then you'd have the means to turn it off if you wanted to,
04:06 without, of course, unplugging the cable.
04:08 Let's get now though a closer look at Bruce Lee.
04:10 Generally, I am quite happy with how Bruce Lee turned out here.
04:13 Now he is though a polyresin statue that has then fabric over top of it.
04:17 He has a fabric tank top that can be removable.
04:20 And he also has himself fabric pants.
04:22 Everything else though is polyresin.
04:24 The Nunchaku that we're going to be coming back to more in a moment,
04:27 will actually then sit inside his hand.
04:29 And then you'll also see as well, see there's a little indentation here.
04:32 This will slide in between his bicep and his torso.
04:35 Head sculpt wise for Bruce Lee, I think they've landed a decent enough likeness for him.
04:38 It does look like the actor, though I do feel like the head is a little too long.
04:43 Maybe just shortening it up just a little bit.
04:45 But I think like likeness wise and the way they've painted this is nicely done.
04:49 It does, I feel at least definitely does look like the actor.
04:52 He's fairly lean and mean.
04:54 Obviously that's the way that Bruce Lee would be.
04:56 I think they've nicely captured the sculpting here.
04:58 Even in fact putting in things like veins.
05:00 And the way they've accented really the musculature of his body.
05:03 Which is something that only really then will be enhanced.
05:06 The moment we take his tank top off.
05:08 To get this off you would think that you'd have to then try to fight this around his arm.
05:11 And try to fit this over his head.
05:13 They've actually in fact made it a lot easier.
05:15 If you look at to the side of it, there is a Velcro closure.
05:18 Holding on to the statue, because the last thing I would want to really do is drop this.
05:21 Just going to detach the Velcro like this.
05:23 And then it makes things certainly a lot easier.
05:26 You're just going to fold this around and then drape this over top of his head.
05:29 And then you're going to want to fit this over his arm.
05:31 Now the hardest thing about this, as I've already done this a couple of times.
05:34 Is getting this around his head.
05:36 Even though there is really that Velcro closure.
05:38 The head is still large enough that you have to kind of fight to get the t-shirt around it.
05:43 Obviously again you're doing this, you're probably not going to be doing this more times than one.
05:47 I mean obviously, I think when it comes to display this.
05:49 I actually like to prefer to display him with the tank top myself.
05:52 Just because I like the look of it having it.
05:54 It brings just a little bit of additional coloring.
05:56 But to take it off is definitely one of the benefits of a statue like this.
05:59 So it gives you two different ways of displaying it.
06:01 The detailing there is definitely captured there on his torso.
06:04 Again, there's very little in the way of fat here.
06:07 The coloring of the actual skin tone is well done here.
06:10 I mean there's some additional slightly kind of pink colors that they've airbrushed in there as well.
06:14 But again from a likeness standpoint.
06:15 I think it looks decent enough and it looks close enough looking like Bruce Lee.
06:18 Now I did say though, taking the nunchuck probably a little easier now to see sort of what's going on here.
06:23 See there's like a hole right here that very much obviously outlines where the handle of the nunchuck is going to go.
06:29 So what you're going to do is you're going to take the one end of it.
06:32 And you're going to dowel it inside his hand.
06:34 And then you're going to take the other hand, the other handle of it.
06:36 And slide it pretty much in his armpit.
06:39 And then he's going to be holding it this way.
06:41 Really without the nunchuck, it kind of does leave a little out of place.
06:44 Obviously it looks like he's supposed to be holding something.
06:46 So it's nice to see that they actually included not only just a nunchuck as part of the displaying.
06:50 But the fact that also there's a chain connecting the two handles together.
06:53 Again it does certainly complete the look nicely here of Bruce Lee.
06:57 And again you can still keep the obviously the fabric pants on there as well.
07:00 The tailoring by the way is not something really to get a chance to talk about too much.
07:04 When you look at polyresin statues.
07:05 Because generally everything fabric wise is usually also sculpted in polyresin.
07:09 But by incorporating more than one medium, I think the fabric is certainly a nice touch.
07:13 It gives you a natural drape to pants that wouldn't be able to always be successfully accomplished by if you had to have to sculpt it.
07:19 It does have the belt there on the front that's been tied off nicely.
07:22 And while the pants obviously here are in fabric.
07:25 The socks and the shoes that Lee are sporting are also molded here in the polyresin.
07:30 And those are nicely painted there too as well.
07:32 The socks done brightly here in the white.
07:34 The undersole as well.
07:36 I do like that they've added also a little bit of scuffing.
07:38 A tension of detail that they didn't really even need to put there in the first place.
07:42 Then to complete of course the look you're going to get yourself Bruce Lee.
07:45 Now there's a hole right here.
07:46 Let me show you what I'm doing here.
07:48 There's a hole right here and there's a hole right here.
07:50 You're going to align the two pegs, the posts and the bombs of his feet to those holes.
07:53 And then you're going to have to just kind of work your way down until eventually he gets into those holes.
07:59 Once that's now complete you can see really how good Lee looks with now the illuminated base.
08:04 I like the look of Lee.
08:05 You know again like from a head sculpt standpoint.
08:07 I feel like the hair is maybe a little too high.
08:09 But I do think that likeness wise it looks definitely a lot like Bruce Lee.
08:12 And whether you decide though you want to display the figure with or without the tank top.
08:16 I think though is still a nice inclusion.
08:18 Because very well they could have just kept the tank top as a permanent piece.
08:21 That you had no choice at all.
08:23 And of course the last thing to finish off this is get yourself a little placard there that can go on the front of it.
08:27 Yeah you know I think though when I'm wrapping things up for this review.
08:30 I'm ultimately probably going to be putting the tank top back on.
08:33 Even though I think Starius has done an exquisite job on the sculpting and the detailing for his body.
08:38 I think I just prefer myself for specifically this look of Lee.
08:41 To have the tank top on myself.
08:43 But I do like the idea that again like the display base illuminates.
08:46 The only thing I would say though is being that as a statue collector.
08:50 And I probably can speak to also other statue collectors out there as well.
08:53 That having a display base always on like this.
08:56 You know in order to illuminate this you always either have to have this plugged in.
08:59 On to you know anything that's USB enabled.
09:01 Or you have a plug that can go into the wall.
09:03 Or you're gonna always have to unplug this from the display base to unilluminate.
09:08 To turn it essentially off.
09:09 I do wish that they could have had this so that the cable would always be plugged in.
09:12 No matter what.
09:13 So if you had this tucked away or on a detolf shelf or somewhere in a far enough away.
09:18 It's always hard to kind of get access to a cable.
09:20 Had they at least had a switch somewhere on the side.
09:22 A button or an actual just on and off switch.
09:24 Then at least you could always have the thing turned on.
09:26 Always plugged in at least.
09:27 And then decide whenever you want to turn it on and off.
09:30 The only other thing I would have done differently to the statue itself.
09:33 I had given you guys 411 earlier in Canadian prices.
09:36 But for the US collectors out there that are interested to get their hands on Bruce Lee.
09:40 The difference between the collectors and the deluxe version is $40.
09:44 The collectors going for $329 US.
09:46 The deluxe version that has the illuminated display base is gonna go for $369.
09:50 It's exactly $40.
09:51 So you can decide based on that.
09:53 The statue is gonna still stay the same.
09:55 But you can decide if you want to have it illuminated.
09:57 Spend the extra $40 and get it in the deluxe version.
10:00 If you have no plans in mind at all to ever have this illuminated.
10:03 Or you would have liked to have it illuminated.
10:05 Just gonna be a little bit harder with the way that you've got all your statues set up.
10:08 Opt instead to go with the collectors edition.
10:10 Either way though, Bruce Lee looks pretty good.
10:12 I really like the way that this guy did turn out.
10:14 The placard is also a nice touch.
10:16 It's a bit of a shame I had a little bubble on the back of it.
10:18 But I'm never really gonna be seeing it anyways.
10:20 I'm always gonna be looking at like most placards tend to be.
10:22 Facing forward. Never looking back.
10:25 The additional touches of adding the nunchaku is something that's being removable.
10:28 Although removing it, obviously you're gonna see a very open hole that is in his hand.
10:32 That looks like he's obviously gonna be holding something.
10:34 And he's also gonna have a hole kind of in between his bicep and his torso.
10:37 So it's gonna look like it's a little out of place.
10:39 Obviously the finishing touches are also as well.
10:42 You can either choose to go with a tank top with or without it.
10:44 I choose with it.
10:46 But you can also choose to have it displayed without it if you want.
10:48 Big thank you once again to the folks over at Star Ace that did provide this sample.
