Transcript
00:00 Hello, my name is Sian Jones and these are the latest headlines from our newsrooms across
00:05 the North West. A brave Wigan youngster suffered terrible injuries when he tried to rescue
00:09 his father and little brother from a blaze that claimed their lives. It has emerged.
00:14 The team, who we are not naming, had followed his dad back into their home on Roynton Road,
00:19 Goose Green, as flames engulfed it, but he was beaten back by them as he got upstairs
00:24 and when he tried making his escape through a window and down a drainpipe, he fell, suffering
00:29 multiple back fractures. The founder of a renowned and much-loved bakery
00:34 which spanned over 30 years has sadly passed away. Gwen Latham, who with her husband Bill
00:39 founded Latham's of Broughton in the 1970s, passed away on Tuesday April 9th, aged 94,
00:45 from heart failure. Bill also passed away in September 2023 at the age of 93.
00:51 Together, Gwen and Bill created Latham's of Broughton which began in the small village
00:56 of Broughton in Lancashire, where Mrs Latham started making desserts in her kitchen for
01:00 her sister's hotel, The Pied, in Claytonley Woods, Chorley.
01:06 In other news, a school caretaker has been arrested after a live Facebook sting by paedophile
01:10 hunters in Blackpool. The 55-year-old was apprehended at Velvet Coast of Wetherspoons
01:16 on the promenade on Tuesday evening. He was taken outside onto the promenade where he
01:20 refused to speak with the group in a 30-minute live stream, in which he was accused of grooming
01:25 a teenage boy online. Parents watching the live stream identified him as the caretaker
01:30 at Unity Academy in the Warbreck area of the resort.
01:35 Morecambe features in a new list of the 34 best beaches in the UK. The chart by Time
01:41 Out Media is described as a 'hand-picked guide to the UK's finest beaches' and Morecambe
01:47 gets a place in at number 28. Beaches in England, Scotland and Wales are included in the list
01:52 but Morecambe's is the only one in Lancashire to make the grade.
01:56 And finally, a Burnley golfing prodigy has helped raise hundreds of pounds for support
02:01 after suicide following the death of a young golfing star's dad.
02:06 When news broke of 8-year-old Aidan Hughes' tragic loss, Richie Riley, 8, told his parents
02:12 he wanted to raise money for the charity which is dedicated to helping families suffering
02:15 from loss due to suicide. So, Richie, with the help of family and friends, assembled
02:20 22 of the best junior golfers from across the UK to play in the Richie Riley Open.
02:27 The weather now, a chilly but largely dry start to the day, with scattered showers developing
02:32 by the afternoon and highs of 11 degrees.
