00:00 central government. What approach is used to solve this big problem, this big issue?
00:07 Yes, so it's important to keep in mind that while we have had an unprecedented high number of
00:17 Rohingya arrivals in Aceh the last three weeks, we have had boat arrivals before in Aceh,
00:27 going the whole way back to 2015, 18, 20, 21, 22. And every time we have had boat arrivals,
00:37 we have coordinated with the local authorities and the national authorities on identifying
00:43 suitable sites. And this is what we are currently doing. So we have currently five locations where
00:54 the Rohingya refugees are, and two of them have already been designated. But the problem that we
01:03 have is that they are overcrowded. So they are beyond capacity. So that's one of the reasons
01:09 why we need additional sites. And the other reason is that in two locations, we have Rohingya
01:19 refugees, especially women and children that are residing in very inappropriate conditions,
01:28 near beaches, under tents that are not protecting against the weather and other
01:38 situations. So that's also one of the reasons why we need additional sites. But we are in
01:47 discussion, constructive discussion with the national and local authorities. And I am confident
01:54 that we in the coming and very near future, we'll be able to stabilize the situation.
01:59 Okay. For UNHCR, what is the role of UNHCR to handle Rohingya refugees?
02:08 Yes. So UNHCR is the UN's refugee agency. We were created in 1951. And our mandate is
02:19 to work in close cooperation with governments to provide international protection to refugees and
02:27 to find durable solutions. And that UNHCR does in over 130 countries around the world. And we do
02:38 that as well in Indonesia, we work very closely with the government. But we also work with other
02:46 UN agencies, for example, the International Organization for Migration, and UNICEF, UNFPA
02:54 and other UN agencies, as well as several national organizations like for example,
03:02 GRS, YKMI and many national and local organizations. So we have a humanitarian community
03:09 where we address the situation in close coordination with the national and local
03:16 authorities. Okay. And over decades, Indonesia has upheld the humanitarian tradition of welcoming
03:24 refugees with open arms. But we know that we expect to activate coordination between countries,
03:31 especially among Asian, in order to work together to address the Rohingya refugee crisis,
03:37 in your opinion. But why so far, Asian has been unable to tackle the crisis in Myanmar and also
03:44 Rohingya crisis? I think that if you look worldwide, the last 10, 12, 20, 34 years going back,
03:57 you will see that the number of armed conflicts that have started has been very high. But
04:06 unfortunately, the number of armed conflicts and wars that have been solved, and that have ended
04:14 has been extremely low, which is also why we see a very high number of refugees in the world today,
04:25 we have over 45 million refugees in the world today. And that number will unfortunately continue
04:35 to increase until we solve the wars, the human rights violations and the armed conflict. And I
04:44 think that Indonesia has played a strong leadership role to address the situation in Myanmar, which
04:54 obviously is at the root of a lot of suffering, including for the Rohingya refugees. So I think
05:02 Indonesia with its regional and global leadership will continue to try and tackle this. And I'm sure
05:12 with Indonesia's diplomatic leadership skills, and hopefully we will see some result in addressing
05:21 this in a Sian and forum and any other forum that is available. Okay, we hope there will be a
05:32 concrete solution to handling this Rohingya refugees and Maimon, UNHCR representative for
05:39 Indonesia. Thank you for joining us on Sian and Indonesia Connected. Thank you so much.
05:46 Bye. Thank you, Tiffany. We'll see you next week.
05:54 And Sian and Indonesia Connected will be back with information on the Israeli troops
05:58 holding and integrating hundreds of citizens in Gaza,
06:01 who are suspected of having a relationship with the Hamas group. More on that in a moment.
