00:00 When Elon Musk took over X, formerly Twitter, he said he was doing so to champion free speech.
00:05 Now, according to EU watchdogs, the social media platform has become a haven of disinformation,
00:10 which pretty much everyone expected.
00:12 The new report from the European Commission found that X is "the platform with the largest
00:17 ratio of misinformation or disinformation posts, having proportionally more Russian
00:21 disinformation disseminated on it than any other social media platform."
00:26 This all comes after Elon Musk pulled X out of the voluntary EU disinformation code of
00:30 practice agreement earlier this year, though the EU still has fairly strict laws about
00:34 disinformation and misinformation under their Digital Services Act.
00:39 If companies fail to comply with those laws, they could be liable to pay 6% of their annual
00:43 earnings in penalties.
00:45 European Commission Vice President Vera Zhorova told Bloomberg this new report finds X in
00:49 violation of EU law and that X must comply in combating disinformation on the platform,
00:54 adding about the situation, "This is a multi-million euro weapon of mass manipulation aimed both
01:00 internally at Russians as well as Europeans, and the rest of the world."
