"It is what it is" Pep on City's loss against Arsenal

  • last year
It was Man City's first loss against Arsenal since 2015 within a Premier League match. Pep Guardiola's response to the loss was that "it is what it is".

No one has ever won 4-in-a-row but this time last year Man City weren't top of the leader board so there is still time for anything.

00:00 What did you make of the game today?
00:03 Good afternoon to everyone.
00:05 Congratulations, Arsenal, for the victory.
00:07 Tight game. We started really well in the first minutes.
00:10 They started really well in the beginning, in the second half with Martina.
00:13 They increased the rhythm.
00:15 The other was tight and we didn't create much.
00:17 Didn't create much.
00:19 And we defended really well, both teams.
00:21 And at the end,
00:24 yeah, when the flexion was worse, we lost the game.
00:27 Did you think it was a fair result?
00:30 It's what it is.
00:32 It's what it is. I'm not going to.
00:34 I would love to change it.
00:35 And I think I don't have this ability to change it.
00:37 So it's what it is.
00:38 You seem very frustrated at the final whistle, obviously understandable,
00:41 but for a particular reason, yeah.
00:43 No.
00:45 I say congratulations to the referees to try to avoid the yellow card again.
00:48 And I congratulate my players, some players of them,
00:53 my colleague Mikel and our fans, and come back.
00:56 No.
00:57 You said it was a tight game.
01:00 Was that the kind of game you set out for it to be?
01:02 When you came here today, were the game plans not good?
01:05 Well, we were looking forward to finding more players in the middle,
01:07 Cecily Julian and the other one to find, but they defended really well.
01:10 They make incredible high pressing.
01:12 It's difficult to do it because Raya had the ability to play in short and long.
01:15 It's not easy to control these long balls with Gabriel.
01:19 But we know it is a fantastic team.
01:22 They defend well and we know it.
01:24 But in general, it was a tight game.
01:26 I think, for example, the year like last season or two years ago.
01:31 Yeah, I don't know.
01:32 Two years ago when we won 1-2 or we won 3-0 last season,
01:37 they controlled more of the game than it was today, for example, and we won.
01:40 So sometimes it happens.
01:42 In terms of that plan, normally,
01:45 Jack Riddle fits in so well for the kind of game you would normally like to play here.
01:48 But not a touchy sort of pass.
01:51 It wasn't in the team today, was that?
01:55 The fact that we didn't have Rodri, I wanted to put more protection with the ball.
01:59 Players like they are really good with the ball, with Bernardo Coa and Enrico.
02:04 And have players in the middle that have the ability to turn and attack.
02:07 And that was the reason why to be a team so wide.
02:11 And that's why we decided.
02:13 So, of course, Jack could have played, start to come back and play in Leipzig.
02:18 It was really, really good. But today I decided to other players.
02:22 Mateo Kovacic was booked in the first half.
02:26 Were you worried he was going to get sent off then?
02:29 Did you think about taking him off?
02:30 Well, for the reaction for everyone, the second action, but I don't know.
02:35 I'm pretty sure he's not sent off because he was not sent off.
02:37 Because he was sent off, he would have been sent off.
02:40 That I'm pretty sure.
02:41 That's the only way we decided, but nothing wrong happened.
02:44 Did you think about taking him off for a half time?
02:47 No, no, no. For the reason, come from the injury, play less minutes.
02:49 And of course, Mateo also had the ability with the ball.
02:52 And that's why we did it.
02:53 You've now lost all three matches without Rodri.
02:58 Could you imagine that when you got sent off against Forest?
03:01 And how worried are you about how much he's going to rely upon you?
03:05 Well, Rodri is a really important player, like in other ones, for the fact that
03:10 that the last years he played a lot, a lot of games.
03:13 But yeah, the game from Carabao Cup was a little bit different.
03:18 But of course, against Wolves was important today as well.
03:20 So we know it.
03:21 So, yeah, but as a manager, I had to find the moment he's not there.
03:25 So find a way to do it.
03:26 That's why it didn't work to play against Wolves, that Mateo playing just alone there.
03:31 He's not used much.
03:32 And I want a protection with the players in control and find some players in other positions.
03:36 And that was the plan.
03:37 So, like, didn't win.
03:40 So, nothing.
03:43 Is there something you did not like about your team today?
03:47 Nothing.
03:49 Even I don't like it all the time, but after what they have done in the past,
03:52 I have always gratitude for that guy.
03:56 They give everything.
03:57 So they afford and I know how disappointing they are.
04:01 Because we are not used, but it's football, it's happened.
04:05 So for statistics, we don't have to win the Premier League.
04:08 So no team ever have won four in a row.
04:12 So for statistics, it didn't happen.
04:14 But we are in October.
04:15 Sometimes it's good going behind.
04:17 It's not the first time we went behind for the contenders that are up front.
04:20 Last season, we were much, much behind than here.
04:24 But the season is long.
04:26 You know, recover people coming back and, yeah, try to break immediately
04:31 as soon as possible against tough opponents like it's Brighton United.
04:35 You know the situation and, yeah, continue.
04:39 There seems to be going down in Sunday at the end, Erling Haaland,
04:44 Jack Reeves and Kyle Walker involved in a bit of a row with the Arsenal staff.
04:48 Do you know anything about what happened there?
04:51 No.
04:55 I know what happened, but I don't want to say anything.
04:59 [laughter]
05:02 Come on.
05:04 They know it.
05:05 Are you happy with how Arsenal behaved in that situation?
05:08 Yeah, absolutely.
05:09 Last one, Lafayette Banks.
05:11 You ended up with four shots in that game.
05:14 Do you think that's something you could have done differently?
05:16 Or is it just a mark of how Arsenal defended?
05:19 No, it's different.
05:20 How many shots did they get?
05:21 They had 12.
05:22 12?
05:23 In a target.
05:26 At least they won it.
05:28 That's why.
05:29 I don't know how many targets.
05:30 So, yeah, we didn't have much.
05:33 We wanted another type of game, but it's what it is.
05:38 It was a tight game.
05:39 Yasmin has a deflection and they won it.
05:42 And football has happened.
05:43 They did everything.
05:44 We did everything.
05:45 And these margins and these levels and this quality, they make the difference.
05:50 Thank you, guys.
05:51 Thank you.
