00:00 on snow drops, a few daffodils, some anemones, and possibly a few tulips if we
00:06 make it that far. I'm not sure if we will but it's a beautiful afternoon today.
00:10 It's overcast, it feels very fall. The second reason I'm excited is that our
00:14 friends Gabe and Katie are here to help us plant. They live in the Seattle area.
00:18 They were part of the group that helped us plant the whole college this spring.
00:22 They were here last fall to help us plant bulbs and they are here again and
00:25 it's always fun to have friends for this type of project. So here is a look at
00:29 what we've got ahead of us today. Here are all the bulbs. A lot of them are
00:33 smaller. All of these came from Colorblends, which is one of the two
00:37 places I get my bulbs from typically. So Colorblends is my parents garden center
00:41 and I'm always really happy with the selection and the size of the bulbs, the
00:44 quality, and all that. We've had really good luck with them. We did do a full
00:49 video of my whole order because we're not planting all that we have here in
00:53 the barn waiting to go in the ground today. We won't have time to do it all
00:56 today so we're gonna break it up into manageable size chunks. We've also got
01:02 our bulb tone fertilizer which we'll toss in every hole and a whole bunch of
01:06 different augers. Augers are an absolute game-changer when it comes to planting
01:09 bulbs, especially if you're planting a lot of them. Bulb planting is hard work.
01:13 So the way I like to do it, these are actually my favorites, they are the
01:17 Laura edition augers right here. The difference between these and the
01:21 standard power planters is that the sliding or the metal parts at the end
01:24 are much shorter. I can dig the same exact holes I need to but they're way
01:29 lighter having less metal on them. So we will have these linked below and 10% off
01:33 these you guys just augers. Anyway you can see that these are 36 inches long
01:37 versus like the 7 inch long one. Definitely cheaper route here and some
01:41 people actually prefer to have a shorter one which you know more power to you
01:45 however you like to do the job and whatever makes it easier for you. But my
01:49 method is to go along, zip all my holes in the ground, then go along with my bag
01:53 of fertilizer and sprinkle fertilizer in, then I go with my bag of bulbs and just
01:57 start throwing bulbs at the holes and it's not until the very end that I get
02:01 down on my hands and knees and make sure the bulbs are facing the right direction
02:04 and cover over them with soil. So I only have to get down on the ground one time
02:08 and when you're planting a lot of bulbs it makes it so much easier. Now you do
02:13 want to make sure, we do have questions about drill type, for the smaller augers
02:17 you want to make sure you have at least an 18 or a 20 volt drill like this one
02:21 right here. For the great big augers you know we do use like 7 and 9 inch
02:25 augers from time to time when we're planting larger shrubs you need to have
02:29 the 60 volt, they're bigger drills. So this right here is my exact setup minus
02:33 the battery, I need to go grab one. But the 20 volt drill, the handle is really nice to
02:38 have too, it just gives you extra leverage and it just makes it easier. And
02:42 then the 36 inch Laura Edition auger, this happens to be the 3 inch size one
02:47 on the drill right now. Anyway I just wanted to go through all the tools
02:50 and all of that before we get started. Here's one of the 2 inch ones in the 7
02:54 inch size, really nice. And you notice that I'm standing in the pond area, we're
02:58 gonna be planting three different varieties here. We've got Thalia
03:01 daffodils which I love and they look a little bit more dainty and not so
03:06 commanding as some of the larger daffodils with bright colors. They're a
03:10 beautiful white and then we also have snowdrops because I want some nice early
03:16 color out here. We've got some blue shades anemones which are absolutely
03:19 gorgeous and so just they're so beautiful the color is so pure. So yeah
03:24 that's anemones, snowdrops, and daffodils are going here and then we've got great
03:29 pious scents to go out in the orchard. So the way I think we're gonna go about
03:32 this is really no structured way. I don't really want there to be any big large
03:38 drifts in this area. I kind of want it to look more hit-and-miss, a little bit more
03:42 natural. So like you know maybe popping three daffs behind this rock and then
03:46 maybe like seven behind another one and kind of just going around the area and
03:50 doing little bunches here and there. Of course the shorter things the snow
03:53 drops and anemones will kind of put toward edges a little bit more and the
03:57 daffs will be sited a little bit further away from the the edges of borders but I
04:01 think it's gonna be just gorgeous. We even have the fire going right now for
04:04 ambiance. Hey bud you got your snacks and your tools. Where's everyone else? In the
04:12 barn? Let's go get them. Everybody ready? Are you ready? Yeah. Perfect. Did you
04:20 remember to mention 10% off? I don't, did I mention that? Gotta promote the store. 10%
04:25 off the augers not the drills right? Yeah.

04:59 (upbeat music)
05:29 - All right guys, just a little update.
05:30 We've got all the daffodils in the ground
05:32 and they are spread throughout this whole area,
05:34 just in little groupings.
05:36 Some are larger than others.
05:37 And then we went in with anemones,
05:39 which I said we weren't gonna do any large drifts.
05:41 And then I got to thinking about how beautiful it would be
05:44 to have all of those blue anemones
05:45 in the same location.
05:46 Don't laugh at me.
05:48 - I said we weren't gonna do drifts
05:49 until I realized how beautiful a drift would look.
05:51 - Well, of course.
05:53 So all of the blue anemones, all of them, 800 of them.
05:56 - It'll look nice.
05:58 - It's gonna look gorgeous.
06:00 So it's not technically on the inside.
06:02 It's all on this outer part of this berm
06:04 and there are a few drifts of the daffodils
06:06 in here as well.
06:07 It's just gonna be so pretty.
06:08 And then the snow drifts are,
06:11 a lot of them are just kind of tucked around
06:13 the edges of beds and toward the front part here.
06:15 You can see where Gabe and Katie are right now.
06:17 They're kind of hugging these rocks over here.
06:20 We're doing two bulbs per hole.
06:22 Would you like to demonstrate?
06:24 One of you guys.
06:25 - I can't really see these holes.
06:28 - Good enough.
06:29 - One, two.
06:31 - Pointy side up, perfect.
06:33 You can see all the bulb tone,
06:35 kind of that whiter looking substance
06:37 that smells really delicious.
06:40 Russell likes it.
06:43 So the Thalia daffodils bloom mid-season.
06:45 These snow drops bloom very early
06:48 and the anemones are early through mid-season.
06:50 So we should have some overlap.
06:52 It's gonna be so pretty.
06:53 And this is kind of the starting point.
06:55 You know, when you put bulbs in,
06:57 you kind of want to start with just a few varieties
06:58 and then see how it looks in the spring
07:00 and then either fill in with those same varieties
07:02 or maybe add a few other little accent things.
07:05 But I think kind of focusing in on blues and whites
07:07 will be really nice.
07:08 So after we're all finished up here,
07:10 we're gonna head out to the orchard next.
07:11 (upbeat music)
07:14 (upbeat music)
07:16 All right, guys, we just finished up the pond area.
07:43 That's 1,700 bulbs in this space.
07:46 It's gonna be absolutely gorgeous.
07:48 I'm so excited to see what it looks like next spring.
07:51 Oh my goodness.
07:52 Anyway, we're gonna head out to the orchard next.
07:53 So we've got the muscari or great pyacence right here.
07:57 And these are a small bulb, three inches,
07:59 three inches deep and two inches apart.
08:01 So I think we can do two per hole
08:02 if we use the three inch auger.
08:04 And these, of course, they bloom blue.
08:06 They smell wonderful, really sweet.
08:09 And they grow about five to seven inches tall.
08:11 We have a bunch of them already in here.
08:12 In fact, I think we planted a bunch with you guys last year.
08:16 We did a bunch of bulb planting out here.
08:18 They were so, so beautiful and I enjoyed them so much.
08:21 We did mow them down when they were still fairly green.
08:25 We didn't let them die completely back.
08:27 So I'm hoping to amp up the amount we have in here.
08:29 I'm guessing that they'll still come up.
08:32 - Then you'll just have a lot.
08:33 - So we'll just have a whole bunch in here.
08:36 So we're going to just aug holes right in the grass,
08:39 put a couple bulbs per hole.
08:40 And really, this shouldn't take very long.
08:42 Two, let's see, a thousand bulbs, two per hole.
08:46 - 500 holes.
08:47 - 500 holes.
08:48 Okay, so 250 per side, we can do this.
08:51 (upbeat music)
08:53 (upbeat music)
08:56 (upbeat music)
08:58 (upbeat music)
09:01 (upbeat music)
09:03 (upbeat music)
09:06 (upbeat music)
09:10 (upbeat music)
09:12 (upbeat music)
09:15 (upbeat music)
09:17 (upbeat music)
09:20 (upbeat music)
09:22 (upbeat music)
09:25 (upbeat music)
09:28 (upbeat music)
09:30 (upbeat music)
09:33 (upbeat music)
09:35 (upbeat music)
09:38 (upbeat music)
09:42 (upbeat music)
09:48 (upbeat music)
09:52 (upbeat music)
09:56 (upbeat music)
10:03 (upbeat music)
10:06 All right, we are done.
10:10 It looks like we've just done a tremendous amount
10:12 of work out here, doesn't it?
10:14 (laughing)
10:14 It looks about the same as when we started.
10:17 Honestly, when we were auging the holes,
10:19 I kind of thought, well, is this going to be kind of a mess
10:21 in the end, but it's not.
10:22 I mean, this soil will settle back down into the grass
10:26 and you won't even notice where we were.
10:27 And it was nice because there was kind of like
10:29 little natural openings in the grass.
10:32 And I tried to hit those for holes rather than try to go
10:34 in where it's thicker.
10:36 So we didn't tear up a bunch of the grass in this area.
10:39 It still looks really nice.
10:40 So again, a thousand great pyacents in this area.
10:44 Along with the other things, we have snakeshead fritillaria.
10:47 We have the woodland blend mix from color blends
10:50 in this area, which is a mix of beautiful things.
10:53 There's crocus and daffodils.
10:55 There's some other variety of daffs.
10:57 I can't remember.
10:57 You guys remember what varieties we planted last year?
11:01 We were talking about it.
11:02 They're like, how many did we put?
11:04 - No.
11:05 - We planted, oh, 1500 tulips?
11:08 - Yeah.
11:09 - Out in the South garden last year
11:10 after we did the orchard project.
11:13 They're such good sports.
11:14 Oh my goodness.
11:15 - It was fun.
11:16 - Honestly, like augers make the job really nice,
11:18 but getting together a bulb planting party,
11:20 that's the way to do it.
11:24 You guys are awesome.
11:25 So anyway, guys, that is it for today.
11:26 We will have another bulb planting video here
11:29 probably soon.
11:31 We've got to get the area cleared out
11:33 and we've got some tulips and daffodils
11:34 that are really pretty that I'm excited about,
11:36 but that was our first big push
11:38 and we got 2700 bulbs in the ground today.
11:41 Something really fun to look forward to for next spring.
11:43 So anyway, thank you guys so much for watching this video.
11:46 Hope you're having a great day
11:47 and we will see you in the next one.
