00:00 And we just want to get some more things out here. It's so exciting to see those first like those initial plants going in
00:06 Because we know how it happened out in the South Garden, you know, you start with something
00:10 We started with some spring grove arborvitaes out there and we recently like in our tour video
00:15 I think we kind of harken back to what it used to look like when we planted those initially and it kind of looked
00:19 Like this out here and then versus what it looks like now
00:22 So we just thought you know
00:24 We should go down there and pick some things up because it's a perfect time to plant the weather is cooling off
00:29 We can get some things going out here and just have that much more to look forward to in the spring
00:33 There goes Aaron. He's gonna go grab the trailer
00:36 But these hornbeams you guys they are so pretty
00:40 I cannot wait to see them grow and fill in and you know, I like them way better out here than I ever did
00:45 where they were at back by the barn and
00:48 Separated - I think having the strong structure here in between a bunch of other evergreens and fluffier tree
00:56 You know like more rounded trees. I think it's gonna be a really pretty thing
00:59 So now I'm gonna plod my way through this powder to the truck
01:02 See if he needs help. He probably doesn't need help and the garden center has been doing their big fall sale
01:08 I was there a couple of days ago though, and it looked like they had some really good stuff still left
01:12 So I'm excited today is really just about shopping for the plants and then probably bringing them back and getting him set out. Oh
01:18 So close
01:21 That big lock is on the trailer. So even if you get to it
01:25 Yeah
01:27 I'm gonna make it easier
01:31 You used to do trailers all the time without backup cameras and such yeah, I mowed lawns for years
01:40 Yeah, and I had a trailer right park it in one side of the garage every day
01:44 I had to back it up into one side of the garage
01:47 I mean, it was a small trailer and I had a small pickup a little Chevy s10. Okay, we may be filling this one up today
01:53 Okay, we have arrived. There's some really pretty fall things pretty asters
01:57 There's still so many beautiful things there and look at this. They did move a bunch forward
02:02 But there's a beautiful practically be sold out by now
02:06 Well mom likes to have a full nursery at all times
02:11 So my guess is we're gonna be focusing on a lot of things that get larger so that we can establish the back of the
02:16 Border now out in this new property
02:19 We really do want to focus on mainly just evergreens trees and larger shrubs and not a whole bunch of perennials
02:25 That's what I said about the South Garden and we ended up just kind of going for it because it's fun and it's beautiful
02:30 And it is a little bit more in
02:32 Connection with the house and the gardens around the house
02:36 So it makes a little bit more sense but out on the new property where we're gonna be doing something completely different
02:40 It's not gonna all be landscaped. In fact, I'm hoping part of its pasture in the end
02:45 We want to really just keep it a little bit on the lower maintenance side, but still beautiful. Let's get a pin oak
02:50 Is that the kind that holds its leaves? I just want to have a variety out there
02:54 I agree and that's it's real pretty but do you really want to treat it? Oh, we need that
03:00 Right behind you
03:02 Okay, that's a birch. That's beautiful. If you want a pin oak Aaron, I'm down. Okay
03:07 Well, do you got a where's your Falcos? I
03:12 Didn't bring them. I probably have a pair inside. It goes 55 by 40. I think those grow on the faster side
03:18 Do that I think well, yeah. Well, I gotta get grab a cart. Maybe it looks like bamboo
03:23 That's really pretty the color
03:26 Bamboo usually has like yeah, but the color is really nice. Maybe it's the grass right behind it giving in that illusion
03:35 That's a pretty grass here's a pine Aaron we got some size yeah, let's get it
03:42 What kind is that? Is that an Oregon green or just a straight-up?
03:45 Austrian
03:47 straight up Austrian 40 by 25
03:49 Yeah, okay. What are these big trees right here? Oh, there's a sweet come here and we should get this. There's a warp warples done
03:57 Sweet gum 40 by 25 bright red fall color
04:01 What do you think of that? I like it. Okay
04:04 Okay
04:07 SK home I can use these right here
04:10 Do you want a probably the
04:13 The tree cart. Hey Aaron, should I put more sumac out there? Oh, geez
04:18 You need to teach your mom how to clean her Falcos. Those aren't my mom's. Oh, well
04:23 In her defense watch out. You got the canopy of another one there
04:27 There that's a nice tree
04:31 Go ahead and get that birch while we're at it I can get it right here. Oh, we're gonna get that
04:38 I can get it right here. Oh, where's the birch right here? Is that like a five gallon can?
04:42 Yeah, I love birch trees. Is that a European white birch? Oh, yeah European white
04:50 Yeah, that's so pretty if you put that on the bottom I can take this first load over
04:54 All right
05:05 Oh
05:07 Thank you for unearthing that one
05:13 Here's what I wonder Aaron I wonder if we should
05:27 Get all of our stuff out here and then load when we want to have everything
05:32 Because I don't want the canopies to get in the way
05:34 So I'm just gonna lean this one maybe here so it doesn't fall down
05:37 It's a good start
05:49 Okay, I like this one a lot. This is an Oregon green Austrian pine, which we have
05:53 Planted in the South Garden. We have one and these stay a little bit smaller than the standard Austrian pine
05:59 So 20 by 15, but the growth habit is a little bit tidier and tighter. You can see the difference just right over there
06:06 See how the Austrian pines a little bit more fluffy a little lighter green and this one's darker green might be kind of nice to
06:12 Have both there's a couple of really nice Austrians right back here. What do you think of those? Oh, yeah
06:17 What's um?
06:20 What's this over here which one this one right here? Yeah, that's an Austrian and this one is an Oregon green
06:26 Okay, which I like them both the Oregon green has more like candle
06:30 Like it's a little bit more you can see the structure more
06:34 Yeah, that one grows 20 by 15 while the Austrians I think 40 by something by 20
06:39 We just looked at the tag and I can't remember already
06:42 40 by 25
06:45 Well, what's the biggest one? Well, I think these look really nice. They're nice and fluffy back here Aaron
06:51 I could probably grab a forklift to grab this one. There's a forklift right there
06:55 So I'm just gonna hand this to you
06:57 We'll have to unearth it a little bit, but I think if we get the forks under it would be a lot easier
07:01 Do you need that is that okay? Yep. All right
07:19 (Truck engine running)
07:21 How's that any any further or yeah push it in as far as it'll go probably
07:35 Perfect that's a nice-looking tree. Yeah
07:48 This one isn't as big of a can no still gonna be heavy though
07:53 That good enough? Yeah, I think so
07:59 (Truck engine running)
08:01 There
08:22 Okay, crimson Kings do okay in our area
08:27 They always get powdery mildew remember the one in our front yard. Yeah. Yeah, they always get in fact
08:32 I could probably show you one here. So we need some we need some red
08:35 We do there are thundercloud plums right here, which are like a 20 by 20 if I remember
08:40 Correctly, which I may not be remembering right? Nope 20 by 20
08:45 Okay, right there. There's also some choke cherries, but I haven't walked through the front part of the nursery yet
08:51 So I thought we could maybe stroll through there and see what we see what we see
08:54 I'm also thinking about spring blooms - oh you got scratched. I did bummer
08:59 Spring blooms, let's look for
09:03 Hawthorne, would you like a Hawthorne tree? We already have two of them
09:06 Or crab apples. Oh, look at this. Look. Oh
09:10 look at the acorns a
09:13 Heritage oak 50 by 40. I
09:17 Like the 8, but you know what? It's just gonna invite a bunch of squirrels. They're so fun though
09:24 That is kind of fun. Yeah, you know, we should probably
09:27 This is definitely one that holds leaves through the winter. That's an English type. Yeah, or a cross
09:33 That doesn't bother me though. It's an English and a bur oak together, especially with these so far away from the house
09:38 It's not an area that you're gonna be like raking up, right?
09:42 You do what you want Aaron. I love the acorns though. Okay, here is a crab apple
09:49 Prairie fire about the projects you could do with those a 20. I know I could do a lot of projects with the acorns
09:55 I'm not denying that for sure
09:58 It would be fun to have this one. Can we load this one up, please? Yeah, what is it?
10:02 That is a prairie fire crab goes 20 by 20
10:05 But bright pink blooms and it has a little bit more of that red green bicolor foliage
10:09 Want some elm trees Aaron? No, how about a ginkgo?
10:14 Sure. Well, let's not go crazy on this load. Okay, because we'll have lots of opportunity. You're right. Yep plant more
10:21 Yep, there are some pretty half ones though. These are Laval Laval Laval Hawthorne's but they just have those wicked
10:27 I thought I saw a thornless one somewhere in this nursery. I've got to find it. Oh, here's some red
10:34 What about this chokecherry? How about this birch tree? It's a royal frost
10:37 Yeah, what about chokecherry? Yeah, that's a good one, too
10:43 That'll bloom white in the spring
10:45 Okay, I need to go get the tree cart
10:47 Get left it back here. There's royal frost. There's also I want a parochia
10:51 There's a great big parochia back here that doesn't have this color. It's more green. So it might be less stressed
10:56 Um, see that's on the back rack right there. They're real tall one
10:59 But we're gonna need the cart for that one for sure. If not the forklift. It's one of these right here
11:06 Or we can get the one in fall color, but I feel like this one is a little bit
11:10 Yeah, you know do me to get the forklift or do you want to do the cart for that?
11:13 Cart is fine. Okay, if we could find it. Oh
11:16 There it is. I see it
11:19 Okay one-handed oh, yeah
11:25 You're gonna get your workout right now. Oh
11:30 That's a beauty. Oh
11:34 so excited
11:36 Boy, what a beautiful mix so real frost choke cherry and then we need to focus on evergreen
11:41 Okay, the royal frost is right back here and this choke cherry looks good. You want this one?
11:47 Yeah, okay
11:50 Oh
12:00 You know what Oh sold. Oh it is
12:03 Nope, it's not. Oh, I don't know why I know I don't know why growers do that
12:08 That was a new thing when I was still here. Really? They've just started putting these
12:11 Yeah, I'm like doesn't really take three tags to tell what this tree is right and can you use something other than red?
12:17 That one's kind of a beast that's definitely gonna be top-heavy
12:31 You got it, all right, let me switch it around no, okay
12:35 You got this Aaron
12:39 Hey, oh
12:42 Boy I don't know. Can you make it through that gap?
12:46 Need to have some words with your mom about how she organizes in here
12:51 Those are fighting words. I know
12:54 You know, she watches every video and talks to us through the screen
13:00 She's definitely a
13:01 beauty over
13:03 Practicality I air her direction
13:07 You bring you at raid me in what a beautiful blend of things today already
13:12 We're just missing some blue spruces, which I think we're gonna wait on. Okay, we're gonna take a quick spin through here
13:18 To see if there's anything that we've missed. Oh, this is how this is beautiful a purple weeping Beach. Oh
13:27 Not looking super purple right here
13:29 10 by 15. I love the structure of that one in particular a tupelo tree. Look at the color on this. Oh
13:37 my word
13:39 Okay, show Aaron that one there's a perfect purple crabapple, oh, there's some like nice big trees here
13:47 What is this one a new harmony elm
13:56 70 by 65 dang
13:59 Extra blue limber pine 25 by 15. I like that one. That's a beauty
14:05 What we need to do is we need to start getting in what we have and then figure out
14:09 What else we need? All right, you look like you need to go to the bathroom. I do don't say that my camera
14:15 I'm holding it right now until we're done. Okay, let's go load up
14:18 Actually, I gotta have this one
14:21 All right, he's sizing it up you got it you got I had to grab it Aaron
14:28 it's probably not for the
14:30 New property, but I'm thinking I got a spot in the South Garden for that beauty. It's just so pretty
14:36 All right, you just tell me what you want me to do here, let's get this one the big one yeah
14:48 Oh
14:50 No, we're gonna lay it down or get all everything in here and then start laying stuff down. Yeah, let's get everything in first
15:13 Oh
15:15 It's a beautiful blend love it
15:21 I'm not gonna tip these. No, do we have any straps or anything? I don't think we need really slow. Yeah, okay
15:42 There they are
15:44 Whoo. How many did we get?
15:46 Nine nine ten one two, three, four five six seven eight nine ten
15:53 Nice. Oh, I cannot wait to set these out just seeing more green out there or more plant life
16:01 It's gonna just change it so much. I
16:04 Think everything's still on the trailer Aaron
16:07 Thanks, though
16:10 So I think we're gonna stand everything upright in the trailer and go take a break for lunch
16:13 And then we're gonna come back after that. We're gonna spend some time talking through placement on these things
16:18 Well, probably Aaron I'm gonna look up like all the stats like the fall color so we can stagger fall color as well
16:24 Well, and we were very deciduous heavy
16:27 Yeah, so we need to make sure because I want to make sure that we have a really thick evergreen wall as well, right?
16:32 So yeah, we got it. We got to take our time. So we want to give ourselves that time
16:37 So anyway, we will be back in just a little bit to start in on this
16:41 All right, guys, we are back ready to roll Aaron brought the tractor out so that it'd be easier for the four big ones
16:46 There's four that are super heavy this one that one and the two pine trees
16:51 In fact, one of them is a B&B. It was just popped down in a container to make it easier to hold in a nursery
16:57 Situation, but you're kind of just envisioning like a staggered really tightly planted area
17:04 It's exact or yeah, like staggered is a good way to put it
17:07 But I think that we should put things a little bit closer than what their mature height says
17:12 You know have things overlap by maybe like
17:15 Four to five feet or so. Yeah
17:18 Because I want it to be like a full hedge right, you know
17:22 I want things to be touching basically and in true us fashion. We have no plan
17:26 Yeah, we just grab things that we think are pretty and we're gonna put them in which means we should probably choose the trees
17:34 That get the tallest and start with those. Yeah, guys. We'll want that to naturally be the back layer
17:38 Sound good. Sure. So in that case, I think it's the well, I don't know. Let me get up here
17:44 I got a double check the oak. It's 55 feet tall sweetgums 40
17:49 What's the royal frost is 40?
17:52 What I say on the Austrian again, I cannot remember what the heck Oh 50 to 70 feet tall Aaron
17:59 Yeah, okay. So the pines get 50 to 70 feet tall and then our oak gets 55
18:06 So we'll probably start with those three and then we'll work the rest of them in around
18:10 So what we're gonna do is just get these all placed and then I'll walk through kind of the placement why we decided what we put
18:16 Where and then the stats on each one of these
18:18 (Sawing)
18:20 (Sawing)
18:22 (Sawing)
18:24 (Sawing)
18:26 (Sawing)
18:28 (Sawing)
18:31 (Sawing)
18:33 (Sawing)
18:43 (Sawing)
18:48 (Sawing)
18:54 (Sawing)
18:56 (Music)
19:04 (Music)
19:06 (Music)
19:08 (Music)
19:10 (Music)
19:12 (Music)
19:14 (Music)
19:16 (Music)
19:19 (Music)
19:21 (upbeat music)
19:23 (upbeat music)
19:27 (upbeat music)
19:55 - Okay, we got them all placed here.
19:57 Some of them we couldn't keep upright
19:58 because the breeze is just enough
20:00 to topple those little, the ones in little containers.
20:03 - Maybe we should plant those today.
20:04 - Probably.
20:05 - The littlest ones, those are the easiest anyway.
20:07 - Yeah, get the three of them in the ground.
20:09 We try to stagger things to where they can
20:12 reach their full potential,
20:13 but also to where we have plenty of space
20:15 to put more evergreens and other things in there as well.
20:19 Kind of hard when you don't have everything all at once,
20:21 you know?
20:22 - Right, so the way I envision this is phase one
20:25 is just kind of packing this out with trees and evergreens.
20:29 And then ultimately, I think it'd be kind of cool over here
20:33 where we've got the lane that, you know,
20:35 goes down that way.
20:36 If we kind of mirrored that over here
20:38 and had a gravel driveway that came through here,
20:42 but then also like a walking path or driving path.
20:45 - Like gator wide or what?
20:46 A little wider than that?
20:47 - Yeah, something like that, maybe like 10 feet wide.
20:49 But like a path that comes in here.
20:50 So there will end up being like where I'm standing,
20:54 trees and evergreens here too.
20:56 So there'll kind of be like two, that'll be phase two.
20:59 So phase one is getting the trees here,
21:01 trees and evergreens, and then trees and evergreens.
21:04 And this, maybe I can throw my drone up
21:05 and kind of explain.
21:06 - Maybe we can do a little sketch.
21:08 - Yeah, a little sketch.
21:09 - A little sketch.
21:10 Now, do you envision yourself wanting to repeat
21:12 any kind of the formality with the maple trees
21:16 that you have on the other side?
21:17 - Maybe, but I kind of see that
21:18 as kind of so far down the road.
21:20 - Sure.
21:21 - So, I mean, that could be like a year or two down the road.
21:23 I think for the next year or so,
21:27 we'll just focus on getting, you know,
21:29 'cause we still have a lot of areas we need to button up
21:32 by our house too.
21:33 So I don't want to put too much energy into this,
21:36 but I do think getting a hedge started is a good idea.
21:40 'Cause we know that no matter what,
21:42 having a hedge along the fence line.
21:44 - What do they say, the best kind of trees,
21:45 the one planted five years ago?
21:48 - Yeah, something like that.
21:49 - Yeah.
21:49 - Yeah.
21:50 - Yeah, yeah.
21:51 So get a jump on the big stuff.
21:52 - Right.
21:53 - All right, guys, Aaron is gonna go put the trailer away
21:55 and then grab all of our planting supplies.
21:57 While he does that, I will walk you through all the trees
22:00 we ended up getting today, some of their stats,
22:03 and what our thoughts are for what's gonna go around them,
22:06 sort of.
22:07 It's a very, very loose plan at the moment.
22:10 The nice part about this is that, you know,
22:12 we already set up the water system
22:14 after we planted the hornbeams.
22:15 So it's gonna be very easy to tap into that
22:18 and run drip for each one of these trees.
22:20 First off, I do have this extra blue limber pine,
22:23 is what it's called.
22:24 It grows about 25 by 15,
22:27 puts on a little over a foot every year,
22:29 which I think is pretty good for a pine.
22:32 And it is hardy to zone four,
22:34 so negative 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
22:36 I picked it up because I just think it's so pretty.
22:39 I love that soft texture and that blue silvery color.
22:44 So this is either gonna go out here or possibly in there.
22:48 I was kind of thinking maybe
22:49 in one of the flower beds over there.
22:50 So this one's just off on its own at the moment.
22:53 But I thought we would start maybe
22:54 with the first Austrian pine,
22:56 and then we'll just work our way down the line.
22:58 First off, a look at this little corner here.
23:00 This is where our main entrance is
23:02 and where the autumn blaze maples are,
23:04 which will eventually be 20 foot from center.
23:06 They're a 40 foot spread tree.
23:08 So we wanted to make sure to place this first pine
23:10 over a little bit.
23:11 And this is one of the Austrians.
23:13 It's so pretty.
23:15 Oh gosh, it's just the perfect shape, isn't it?
23:17 I'm gonna turn around this way
23:20 so you can see the opening over here.
23:22 So eventually this whole area will be planted
23:24 all the way to about where that post is,
23:27 where the opening is and the lane comes in.
23:29 So this is just gonna be kind of
23:30 the background bone structure here.
23:33 A little bit of winter interest in this space.
23:36 Again, let's run through the stats.
23:38 Zone four through seven grows 50 to 70 feet tall,
23:42 20 to 40 feet wide.
23:45 That is a beast of a tree.
23:47 Does it say growth rate?
23:49 No, dang.
23:50 Full sun loving tree though, for sure.
23:53 Okay, our next one is on the ground.
23:55 This is our European white birch.
23:58 I have one of these in the other property.
24:00 Look at the bark, so pretty.
24:03 Not a huge contrast to our soil actually.
24:06 They're fairly similar in shade.
24:08 And this one just has such an interesting growth structure.
24:11 So it's upright for sure.
24:12 It can grow 35 feet or taller
24:14 and you'll get a better look at it
24:15 once it's standing upright.
24:17 But the branches kind of take on
24:19 a little bit of a weeping structure.
24:21 So it's just got a very graceful architecture in the end.
24:25 Oh, I'm so excited about it.
24:26 Zone two through seven and vibrant yellow fall color.
24:30 This next one I stood up in the hopes that it'll stay up.
24:33 It is a prairie firecribe apple.
24:35 Grows 15 to 20 feet tall and wide.
24:38 So kind of pushed it to the front-ish area,
24:40 sort of where we may have a little walking path through here
24:43 and then we have plenty of space back here
24:45 for big blue spruce or something like that.
24:48 This one gets the most gorgeous pink blooms in the spring
24:51 that are followed by these like half inch size maybe,
24:54 red berries.
24:55 Really wonderful for the birds.
24:58 Zone two I think, no, not zone two, zone four.
25:02 Zone four through seven.
25:04 They're a really great tree, really great.
25:06 And you can kind of see some of the fall color coming out,
25:08 which I think is wonderful.
25:10 So it's got this orange color while that one will be yellow.
25:13 And then we've got a chokecherry that has the red.
25:15 So we'll have a lot of beautiful tones in this space.
25:18 Okay, then we have our hornbeam,
25:19 which grows like 40 feet tall, 20 feet wide.
25:22 Very tight pyramid.
25:23 And let me see if this one will stay upright.
25:25 I doubt it.
25:26 This is a chokecherry, Canada red.
25:29 We have another one of these in the South garden
25:31 that's a five trunk tree, multi-trunk, it's really cool.
25:35 And they get this deep chocolate brown bark.
25:37 They bloom white in the spring, 25 feet tall,
25:40 20 feet wide, hardy to zone two.
25:43 So anyway, beautiful red color.
25:46 We wanna make sure to have some red foliage in this area
25:49 to kind of contrast all of the green and blue
25:51 that ends up usually in one of our mixed borders.
25:54 Boy, the sky's pretty today, look at that.
25:57 Okay, then we've got our sweetgum tree right here.
26:00 Warblesden, I've not grown this variety before.
26:04 Zone six, okay, this one's gonna be an interesting one then.
26:08 We'll see how it does.
26:09 We are a zone six, formerly a zone five,
26:12 so that makes me a little nervous.
26:14 Grows 40 by 25, fall color is orange to purple.
26:18 They've got the really cool shaped leaves,
26:20 and they do get the little spiky ball things.
26:24 So I was thinking, you know,
26:25 if we're gonna have a sweetgum out here that produces those
26:28 or have a sweetgum at all that produces those,
26:30 having it out here where it's not over grass,
26:33 not over walking area, this is the perfect space
26:36 to put a tree like that.
26:37 Okay, next we have another birch tree.
26:38 This is a royal frost.
26:40 You can see right away that it's got more
26:42 of a purple tone to its leaves.
26:43 You can see some of the fall color again coming out.
26:46 It ranges from yellow to orange to purple to bronze,
26:50 sometimes a little bit of red in there.
26:52 They're beautiful.
26:53 Now the bark ages white.
26:55 So you'll see right here, right now,
26:57 it's kind of like a purpley brown color.
26:59 Down lower, it's got more of a white tone,
27:01 and it will take on more and more white as it gets older.
27:05 It'll grow 40 feet tall by about 25 feet wide.
27:08 Zone four, they're a great tree.
27:12 I just love them.
27:12 We've got these all over the place.
27:15 Oh boy, you are set.
27:16 - What do you wanna plant first?
27:18 - Did you bring me my water?
27:19 - I did. - That was nice.
27:21 - Little ice in there too. - Thank you.
27:22 Next we have a Vanessa parotia tree.
27:26 Oh, my parents have one of these in their yard
27:28 and it's always so beautiful.
27:30 They're very slow growing.
27:31 That's why I was thankful to find one that was this size.
27:34 There are some trees that it's just worth it, you guys,
27:36 to hold out and get the biggest one that you can.
27:40 Got another Austrian pine right here by this hornbeam,
27:43 and our last tree has toppled over.
27:45 It's the oak.
27:46 It gets so big that we thought maybe having it
27:49 kind of back here would be a beautiful backdrop.
27:52 Plus it's one, I think, that holds its leaves,
27:54 so at least we tucked back in here,
27:57 and it turns bright red in the fall.
27:59 So once it's got its huge size right here,
28:02 it'll be this red beacon back here,
28:05 and this lane will not be here eventually.
28:08 Okay, let me tip it right back up.
28:10 Oh, 55 by 40,
28:13 pyramidal with slender horizontal branches,
28:16 rusty orange to red fall color, zone four.
28:20 It's got a really beautiful look right now.
28:24 Really beautiful.
28:26 Oh, just looking over this way
28:28 and seeing some of the layers we've got started.
28:31 Oh, so exciting.
28:33 And see, our water line just runs along this fence line,
28:35 and then we just tap in like this one has been right here.
28:39 Tapped in, and then it comes over here and waters the tree,
28:43 and that's how we'll be running water to all of these.
28:46 Whoa, Aaron is racing down the road.
28:48 What is he doing?
28:49 So the fun part about this,
28:50 because you want to site most of your big stuff
28:53 toward the back, and then some of your smaller stuff
28:56 toward the front within reason,
28:58 but it still allows you gaps.
29:00 Like I've got a rose from Heirloom Roses.
29:02 It might be called Dortmund, if I'm not mistaken.
29:06 It's one that gets 10 by 10, and it has white blooms on it.
29:09 And I couldn't, I've been hanging onto it,
29:10 trying to figure out the perfect spot to place it.
29:13 And I couldn't figure out a spot in the South Garden,
29:15 so I thought I could just tuck it
29:16 back in one of these mixed borders,
29:18 and it would be beautiful.
29:19 And we would have plenty of space
29:21 just to kind of tuck it back in somewhere
29:23 and really enjoy it and let it do its thing.
29:26 I'm also thinking like some Black Cat Pussy Willows,
29:28 some big Dogwoods, maybe some Butterfly Bush,
29:33 big Forsythias, stuff like that.
29:36 Some things that just get massive.
29:38 Maybe some Snowball Bush Viburnums,
29:39 but I want to make sure, and Lilacs, for sure.
29:42 I want to make sure we end up with four seasons of interest,
29:45 even though we're not doing a whole lot of,
29:47 well, at this point, a whole lot of bulbs
29:48 or perennials or anything like that,
29:50 but just kind of relying on our trees
29:52 and shrubs for that interest.
29:54 All right, guys, so now we're just going
29:55 to plant a few of these.
29:57 We'll see how far we get.
29:58 (upbeat music)
30:00 (upbeat music continues)
30:04 (upbeat music continues)
30:07 (upbeat music continues)
30:11 (upbeat music continues)
30:14 (upbeat music continues)
30:18 (upbeat music continues)
30:21 (upbeat music continues)
30:24 (upbeat music continues)
30:28 (upbeat music continues)
30:31 (upbeat music continues)
30:35 (upbeat music continues)
30:46 (upbeat music continues)
30:56 (upbeat music continues)
31:00 (upbeat music continues)
31:21 (upbeat music continues)
31:24 (upbeat music continues)
31:40 (upbeat music continues)
31:44 (upbeat music continues)
32:02 (upbeat music continues)
32:05 All right, guys, we were just finishing up with the trees,
32:18 which I will go back out there and show you,
32:20 but our perennial load just showed up.
32:23 So we are going to unload that,
32:24 and I want to show you some of the beautiful things
32:26 that we're going to be able to plant
32:27 over the next little bit.
32:28 (water rushing)
32:31 (water rushing)
33:00 We've got some beautiful new sedum,
33:02 and Veronica, and hookahs, oh my goodness, and phlox.
33:07 Oh, I'm so excited.
33:09 Yeah.
33:17 (thudding)
33:30 Oh, you guys, we got some beautiful, fresh plants
33:33 just in time for fall planting.
33:35 I love it.
33:36 We've got a couple of the boogie-woogie sedum right here,
33:38 which I love the variegation on this one,
33:39 that soft sage green with the buttery yellow margins,
33:43 bright yellow flowers, new growth is bright pink.
33:46 I mean, you should see this one
33:47 when it comes out in the spring.
33:48 It's so beautiful.
33:50 Six to eight inches tall,
33:51 and I can't remember how far it spreads,
33:52 but you can see how it kind of forms that mat.
33:55 It says 18 inches here.
33:58 Zone three through eight.
34:00 And then we have the Fun and Games
34:02 Capture the Flag hookah-rella,
34:03 which is a mix between a hookah and a tea-rella,
34:06 eight to 10 inches tall for the leaf canopy,
34:08 and then it sends up bloom stalks
34:10 in the late spring, early summer that have white flowers,
34:13 but I love the chartreuse with that burgundy center.
34:16 I think they are so beautiful.
34:19 And this one, oh, look at how huge these leaves are.
34:24 I can't even remember.
34:25 What is this one?
34:26 Cutting edge tea-rella.
34:28 Yeah, so this is good for a really shady spot.
34:31 You can see the beautiful white flowers right there.
34:34 Eight to 10 inches tall again,
34:36 18 inch spacing, zone four through nine.
34:39 This one looks beautiful with hostas, like a blue hosta.
34:43 Oh, so pretty.
34:44 And then check out this hookah.
34:46 This is Pistachio Ambrosia.
34:48 This is one plant.
34:51 Oh my gosh.
34:52 These grow about 10 to 12 inches tall
34:54 and upwards of almost three feet wide.
34:58 Pink flowers in the late spring, early summer.
35:00 Just a really tough one.
35:02 This one has been really good for us at coming back,
35:04 and not all hookahs are for us.
35:06 We've got the Coral Jade Sedum right here,
35:08 which you can see some of these blooms are done,
35:11 but you can see the buds here,
35:13 and then they open up kind of a corally pink color,
35:15 and I love the sage green of the leaves.
35:17 We've got Midnight Velvet Sedum,
35:20 which are a new one, I think for next year.
35:22 We planted a couple of these in front of the chicken coop.
35:24 They're doing great.
35:25 And I've got a couple other areas I'd like to put these.
35:29 I think, is this the same thing, or is this,
35:31 yeah, Midnight Velvet.
35:33 These are so pretty.
35:35 Opalescence Phlox.
35:36 This is the Luminary Series.
35:38 I love this one.
35:41 I love the delicate, it's like a lavender pink
35:43 with the deeper pink throat.
35:46 We have this up by our Versailles garden,
35:47 and it just does beautifully, and it does grow quite tall,
35:50 like almost three feet tall.
35:52 So it's kind of peaking above some boxwood hedging
35:55 that we have up there, and I wanted to add to that, I think.
35:57 Or I might put this somewhere where we can enjoy it,
36:00 this flower in another location.
36:03 We've got a couple varieties of Veronica right here,
36:06 the Purple Illusion.
36:08 Big, thick bloom spikes.
36:10 The honeybees just love the Veronica.
36:13 Also, the ladybugs love it.
36:15 It must be a host plant or something.
36:17 I don't know, but I find ladybug larva
36:19 and ladybugs on these,
36:21 even when there's no aphids that I can find.
36:23 I remember the first time I noticed that about this plant.
36:26 I was cutting back some Veronica in front of the gazebo
36:28 when that was still in the garden,
36:30 and I just noticed so many ladybugs and ladybug larva,
36:35 and I thought, "Oh my goodness, where's the aphid problem?
36:37 "There's gotta be an aphid problem around here.
36:39 "There's gotta be a food source."
36:41 And they either had cleaned them all up,
36:42 or it was nearby, but not on the Veronica.
36:45 I didn't find a single aphid on the Veronica,
36:47 or even any of the leavings,
36:48 and usually you'll find the little bodies and stuff of them,
36:50 but didn't see any of that,
36:51 but I noticed that the ladybugs
36:53 just are drawn to this plant, which is kinda cool.
36:56 This one's Pink Potion.
36:57 Might be fun to add these to the west side.
36:59 I've got lots of holes where I need something
37:01 that doesn't get enormous.
37:02 This is 14 to 16 inches tall,
37:05 22 inch spread on this one, zone four through eight.
37:08 That might be a good option.
37:09 And then last, we have some Eucalyptus.
37:12 I'm not even positive that I'm saying that right,
37:14 because I am not super familiar with this.
37:17 Crowning Glory Purple Rain Eucalyptus.
37:21 18 to 20 inches tall, Pineapple Lily.
37:25 That's what I should call it.
37:27 18 to 20 inches tall, 24 inches wide, zone six through nine.
37:30 So there's the Purple Rain.
37:32 It looks like it has a purple stem and purpley pink flowers.
37:36 And then there's the Princess Bride, which looks tropical.
37:40 So cool.
37:42 Really excited to try these.
37:43 I think they say, yeah, fold apart sun.
37:45 This kinda texture right here though,
37:47 it looks like it shouldn't survive in our zone,
37:49 and it's really cool that it should.
37:51 So that's our really fun plant delivery for today.
37:53 I wasn't even expecting,
37:55 I knew it was coming at some point this fall,
37:57 I just wasn't sure when.
37:58 So it was really fun that it happened today,
38:00 on the day where we are planting trees.
38:02 Now we did get five of them planted,
38:04 and that's all we're gonna get to today,
38:06 because it's getting close to dinner,
38:08 making spaghetti tonight.
38:09 So I gotta go in and get the sauce started.
38:11 But anyway, I've got the Blue Limber Pine right here,
38:13 which we're gonna wait on.
38:15 Let me show you the other ones
38:16 that actually ended up in the ground today.
38:18 We're planting everything high.
38:20 Aaron's liking planting everything high
38:23 and mulching up around it pretty thickly,
38:26 so we'll see how that goes.
38:27 We're also about ready to do our pumpkin harvest.
38:30 They're just, they're still rocking.
38:32 But we're getting closer and closer to October,
38:34 so I feel like it's about time.
38:36 Okay, here we are.
38:37 Oh, I can't even believe it right now.
38:39 I cannot believe I'm looking at these trees,
38:41 I'm so excited.
38:42 So of course we didn't get the pine done.
38:44 We basically have the two big pines
38:46 and the two larger, the sweet gum
38:48 and the parocha that we did not plant today.
38:50 And then of course the Blue Limber Pine.
38:52 But the smaller ones we did get in the ground.
38:55 So we've got the birch here
38:57 and the Prairie Fire Crabapple.
39:00 And then we've got the chokecherry right down the way here.
39:03 And they've all been watered in.
39:05 We'll tap them into drip probably tomorrow
39:07 when we finish up planting.
39:08 So there's the two that we feel like
39:10 they're so heavy on the bottom
39:11 that unless we get a real stiff breeze tonight,
39:14 which I don't think we're expecting,
39:15 they should stay upright.
39:17 There's the Royal Frost Birch right there.
39:19 Looking beautiful.
39:21 Way over here we have the oak.
39:24 It looks like I'm gonna tip it a little bit.
39:26 I think it's leaning to the left just a tad.
39:29 And you know, this one will grow and fill in this area.
39:31 So we'll probably put some manner of evergreen,
39:33 something back here that might get real tall.
39:36 But this area right back here
39:37 will always probably be storage.
39:39 You know, the lane that we put in,
39:41 you know, originates over there
39:42 and it will come through quite a good distance up here.
39:46 Like even where this lane is, it'll be in front of that.
39:49 So we'll have room to do something back here,
39:51 maybe even a structure at some point, like a barn,
39:53 possibly the high tunnels.
39:55 I have no idea.
39:56 We've kicked around lots of ideas,
39:57 not really knowing exactly which direction
39:59 we're gonna take this space,
40:01 but getting trees planted is always a good idea.
40:04 I think it looks so pretty from this view.
40:06 Looking through here and seeing all the new trees
40:09 and the color and how it feels like
40:11 you kind of just want to already walk through
40:13 and take a look at what's here.
40:14 I love that.
40:16 So fun.
40:17 So I'm gonna stand in the shade of this tree.
40:19 Oh, that's nice.
40:20 Oh, got warm today.
40:22 It's supposed to cool down like Thursday,
40:23 I think the high is 65 or something and rainy,
40:26 but then it's gonna heat back up to the high 80s
40:28 for a little bit.
40:29 It's just been a glorious fall.
40:30 It almost feels like summer-ish still.
40:32 That's why it kind of feels like
40:34 it's not time to harvest pumpkins yet
40:36 'cause we're still just cranking out produce
40:38 and all that stuff.
40:40 But you know, I know it's coming.
40:41 Fall is coming.
40:42 And you guys, that is it for today's video.
40:44 I hope that you enjoyed watching it.
40:46 I hope it was a fun one.
40:47 It always is fun to go down to the garden center
40:49 or to go on trips like that
40:51 and pick out pretty things for the garden.
40:52 And it's definitely not lost on me
40:55 that the reason we get to do that
40:56 is because you guys watch our videos
40:58 and support us in that way.
40:59 And that's just, I'm just tremendously grateful
41:01 for all of you and thankful that we get to do this.
41:04 It's just so fun to share this journey with you all.
41:07 And it's just such an amazing community.
41:09 And I'm just thankful for it.
41:11 So I want you guys to know that.
41:12 So anyway, hopefully tomorrow we'll get to the tree planting.
41:15 We also, I think, are gonna be removing some sod tomorrow.
41:18 So it might be a big day.
41:20 I'm not really sure,
41:21 but we'll bring you along for whatever it is.
41:23 Anyway, thank you guys.
41:24 We'll see you in the next one.
