Planting Some Amazing Plants for Winter Interest! ❄️

00:00 a yellow twig dogwood. The last couple of times I've been out planting I've been
00:03 focusing heavily on plants that provide some winter interest because I know as
00:07 we go into fall we're gonna get closer and closer to those days where the
00:10 perennials that are looking so fabulous right now will not be looking quite as
00:13 fabulous and I want to have those bone structure plants those winter interest
00:18 plants out there that we can rely on to look so pretty even when there's snow on
00:23 the ground frost just in those off months. We've got two Spartan junipers
00:27 here those are the dark green ones zone four through nine they grow 15 feet tall
00:31 by about five to six feet wide and they're really good for shaping which
00:36 these two where they're gonna be going I'm gonna want to keep them in a kind of
00:39 a tight conical shape and most of the time those topiaries you see the spirals
00:43 the double decker like lollipops those sorts of things oftentimes they are
00:48 Spartan junipers because they take to trimming so well. They're just a very
00:51 easy maintenance plant in our area they are native I mean this big old tree
00:55 right here this is a juniper that's I don't even know how many decades old and
01:00 I can see I don't know if you guys can see it but there are bees just like
01:03 going nuts in that tree right now on the world I've never noticed that before and
01:08 then we've got one that's a little bit more tender in our area this is a blue
01:11 Korean cedar they grow 20 by 15 zone 4 it's got this really interesting color
01:18 especially when you get it up next to this green one you can see how much more
01:21 blue it is very drapey kind of soft evergreen it does benefit from a little
01:28 bit of protection from the afternoon Sun in hot climates which we do have so I'm
01:32 gonna try to put it somewhere where I know the roots will stay a little cooler
01:36 and where it might get a little bit more protection I've never planted this
01:40 particular variety though so this is gonna be an experiment this is one of
01:43 the ones that came in the Isley load earlier this summer and for our
01:47 ornamental grass I've got five of these these are a northern sea oats look at
01:51 the beautiful oat seed heads that they produce and these just get loaded with
01:56 them they get about three feet tall two feet wide it's a very kind of tidy grass
01:59 I grew these in our last garden in the townhouse I remember doing it was either
02:03 a video or a picture post or something like that where I tied it you know in a
02:07 bundle to cut it back and just showed how easy it would be and is really easy
02:11 with this grass in particular because it just kind of keeps its form really
02:14 nicely I didn't have any problems with it popping up everywhere or spreading it
02:18 just kind of like clumped out a little bit I occasionally would have like a
02:22 little plant start next to it easy to pull but it never spread and I don't
02:26 even know if that's an issue with this type of grass I haven't heard of anybody
02:29 complain anyway this grass is a zone four through nine and it does like to be
02:33 kept in an area that kind of keeps more moist soil and I've got the perfect
02:38 location I think for this one in fact I think I might put all five of them
02:41 together in a sort of drift or a clump so that we get some huge impact from it
02:45 and then the last thing we have back here this is the buds yellow to Terrian
02:50 dogwood grows eight by eight hardy to zone two it does get some whitish to
02:56 lime green spring flowers and then these branches will turn bright yellow in the
03:00 winter time you can kind of see that there on the tag and I do have some
03:04 Arctic fire yellow dogwoods out here on one side of the South garden so I
03:07 thought that this one and they don't get quite as big as this one does so I
03:10 thought just putting this single one out kind of by itself on the other side
03:13 might be kind of nice so that's the lineup for today I'm really excited
03:17 about it you guys because it's kind of like planting fall bulbs but more
03:20 satisfying you know planting fall bulbs you're always so thankful that you did
03:24 it it's kind of like focusing in on the winter interest stuff here in a few
03:27 months I'm gonna be looking at these things thinking I'm so happy we
03:31 prioritize planting these this year because they look so pretty when
03:34 everything else looks kind of drab I do have my shovels back here
03:38 auger biotone starter fertilizer and that's all we're gonna need and it's
03:41 about 85 degrees out here today it's really pleasant it looks like we might
03:45 heat back up just a little bit into the mid 90s for just a couple of days and
03:49 then we're gonna go back down into the low 80s for the week after so anyway I
03:53 think we're trending downward on the thermometer yay but real quick look at
03:58 those oh they look so good supervena sparkling amethyst super tunia vista
04:03 jaspery the carely petite pink gar as a centerpiece and there is a super tunia
04:07 raspberry rush in there the one that's striped and then okay I'm sorry I just
04:12 gotta show you real quick we cut this back in a video not long ago we just
04:15 hacked back these supervena because it was looking a little flushed out and
04:18 they're coming back beautifully and I think in that video we planted the
04:22 bachelors buttons which are blooming now we also planted these sunflowers which
04:26 are growing beautifully and there's big buds we planted the cucumbers which
04:32 they're clearly loving their life oh look at these oh they're so cute
04:38 there's gotta be ones bigger than that in here I see a ton of tiny ones no
04:44 biggins yet we planted the cosmos and then a little bit earlier than that we
04:48 did plant these cantaloupe so the Tuscany melons there are looking amazing
04:54 almost ready but look at him even from behind they're just gobbling up the
04:59 fence and we haven't done any trimming on these at all they just look good all
05:03 the time oh have you come to help me dig holes oh
05:07 very nice actually want your opinion on where these junipers are gonna go I
05:11 think they're gonna look I know you do but I would like it in this case
05:25 it's like you've been married to me for 16 years what do you think you like that
05:31 idea so no room for pots I don't really want to do pots and possibly an arbor
05:36 one day but having some really stiff structure yeah that's not the right word
05:41 but you know what I mean okay so these two then right down here and we need to
05:47 make sure that we've got them at least three feet away from the pathway on
05:50 either side and away from the driveway considering that we do intend on brick
05:55 lining this whole thing I'm so glad you're out here Aaron those are heavy I
05:58 just loaded those up anyway one day we do plan on lining this whole thing with
06:02 bricks right up to where the the rocks are so that there's a clear line between
06:07 you know rocks and mulch but it's just something that will happen one of these
06:10 days oh I like it I like it a lot that's nice you know what I like about this
06:17 placement is that we could put an arbor here if we decided to and it would look
06:21 nice to have these kind of flanking behind all right guys we are gonna dig
06:24 some holes get these planted and then we'll plant the rest of the stuff and
06:27 then bring you along for a tour

08:14 Got all of the planting done.
08:21 I absolutely love these junipers right here.
08:24 Oh, they look so pretty right here.
08:26 Now I have a sneaking suspicion
08:28 that this one might be bumped back from the gravel
08:30 a little bit further than this one.
08:32 We probably should have measured.
08:33 In the end it won't matter
08:34 because we're gonna be pruning them.
08:36 You know, in the end I want them to be about like this
08:39 and then kind of come up into a nice point on either side.
08:42 But for a while it'll matter and it'll drive me crazy.
08:45 So I'm gonna measure just to make sure
08:47 and we'll either bump this one forward a few inches
08:48 or bump that one back a few inches.
08:50 But they look so pretty.
08:52 I think it's the perfect thing.
08:54 Look at it from this angle.
08:56 And that quick fire will get nice and sizable.
08:58 We've got a lilac on this side.
09:01 But having that unified structure right here
09:04 I think is so helpful.
09:05 We've got to do that every once in a while in this space
09:07 since we're planting it so haphazardly.
09:10 I mean, you guys know we have absolutely zero plan
09:12 for this area.
09:14 We went into it with a very rough sketch
09:17 of just where we wanted the grass pathways to be
09:19 but nothing else.
09:21 So we're just kind of putting things in
09:22 as we feel like putting them in.
09:24 It's really fun to do it that way
09:26 when you just have complete freedom
09:28 to put things wherever you want out here.
09:30 It's nice to not have the rigidity.
09:32 Is that a word?
09:34 But we don't have a plan we have to adhere to
09:36 which is really nice.
09:37 Not that you ever have to adhere to a plan
09:40 but sometimes when you do have one
09:41 it's really hard to veer from it.
09:43 So this is very, very nice.
09:45 The next couple ended up on the other side.
09:48 And let me tell you what you guys,
09:49 some of you have said that that Truffula Pink Gumphrina
09:52 doesn't smell to you, but it smells to me.
09:56 I can just, it's in the air over here.
09:59 Not a good smell.
10:01 Pretty plant, not a good smell.
10:06 Oh, look at this.
10:07 Oh, it's so pretty right now.
10:09 Okay, right here, the Cedar.
10:12 I love it right here.
10:15 Now it will get 15 feet wide.
10:17 I think it grows, it said like 12 to 15 inches a year or so.
10:21 So it won't take too awful long.
10:23 So if it gets 15 feet wide,
10:24 I think it's gonna be about out to here
10:27 and then about to where,
10:28 not quite to where the Russian Sage is here.
10:30 So it'll fill in this area beautifully.
10:33 And I like the structure of this one
10:34 with the weight of the Serbian Spruce right behind it.
10:37 And then we've got the Flame Willows
10:39 and we've got a Weeping White Spruce right here,
10:42 which this one won't get much wider than this.
10:44 This is just a very tall, very narrow evergreen.
10:47 Amazing, I love this one.
10:49 I love having that fluff right there.
10:51 So pretty.
10:52 And the Yellow Twig Dogwood ended up
10:54 not very much further away.
10:56 Right in the back of this flower bed right here.
11:00 See it back there?
11:01 And that will get eight by eight.
11:04 So we've got the Black Laced Elderberry
11:05 right to the left of it,
11:06 which won't get too much bigger than that.
11:09 And then we do have a Shade Master Honey Locust.
11:12 So it's a little bit,
11:13 you have to consider what you're planting underneath it.
11:15 While Honey Locust trees don't provide deep shade,
11:18 they still provide shade.
11:20 And dogwoods happen to be one of the most
11:22 shade tolerant shrubs that exist.
11:25 So I know that of all the things that are in this area,
11:28 that will be one that will probably do the transition
11:30 from sun right now to eventual shade
11:33 when this tree gets bigger.
11:34 A lot of this other stuff, Buddleias,
11:37 we've got a Pine right there that might be all right,
11:39 'cause it's gonna be toward maybe the edge-ish.
11:42 But Echinacea, all this stuff
11:43 will probably have to be moved.
11:44 But it'll be quite a long time
11:46 'til I have to even consider doing that.
11:48 But that's the thing when you're starting
11:49 brand new garden spaces,
11:50 you have to just plant 'em for full sun,
11:53 even though you have all the trees in there
11:54 that are gonna provide the shade eventually.
11:56 But it takes a while to get it there.
11:57 So it's just a transition period
11:59 where you get to enjoy it as a sun garden for a while,
12:01 and then it eventually turns into a shadier garden.
12:04 I love it back there, though.
12:05 I think having that bright pop of yellow
12:07 is gonna be beautiful, and you know the flame willows.
12:09 So we've got three in this space.
12:10 There's one there, the one we already looked at,
12:13 and then there's one just beyond that,
12:14 and they have just fiery red stems in the wintertime.
12:18 Their color isn't as vibrant as it will be,
12:20 but you can kinda see where it's heading.
12:22 Over here, oh my gosh, we've got to tame the beast.
12:26 As soon as it colors up and we get to enjoy the fall show
12:29 on this tiger-eye sumac, we're gonna come in
12:32 and go for it, because I'm pretty sure
12:36 we're shrouding out some stuff we planted.
12:38 Yes, we are.
12:38 Oh, there's my little Norway spruce in there.
12:43 Okay, maybe I'll come in here and do that tomorrow
12:46 and clean up at least the edges to free this up
12:50 so that our stuff, our echinacea, can survive.
12:52 This is year three for that sumac,
12:54 and that's the year that it took off.
12:56 First year, it sat there.
12:57 Second year, it sat there.
12:58 This year, it's loving its life.
13:01 Maybe it's all the extra moisture we've gotten this year,
13:03 because that variety in particular of sumac
13:06 hasn't been a problem.
13:07 It spreads, and I knew that it spreads,
13:09 but it typically doesn't spread
13:11 like the older varieties of sumac,
13:13 but it's sure acting like it wants
13:14 to be like one of those right now.
13:16 Okay, the last thing are the northern sea oats,
13:19 which I put by the pond.
13:20 All right, so here are the grasses.
13:26 I kind of tucked them in on the backside of this berm
13:28 right here around these rocks.
13:30 They are also more shade tolerant,
13:31 so as this red oak right here grows and fills in
13:34 and hopefully overcomes the scorch that it endured
13:37 on its ride over here, these should be okay.
13:40 So they can transition from the sun to more shade,
13:45 and I think that this is gonna be really pretty,
13:47 because you really see them more from this side
13:50 more than anything else,
13:50 because this is where the pathway is.
13:53 So they will come up and kind of fill in
13:55 and make a little bank of grass right back there.
13:57 Some of the fish are close.
13:58 Oh, the high fin banded shark is right up here.
14:01 The fish seem so peaceful right now.
14:04 Usually when I come up to the edge,
14:06 like they're getting a little bit more used to me,
14:08 but they usually take off pretty fast.
14:09 So I'm gonna go grab some food,
14:11 see if I can chum them in a little bit.
14:13 (water flowing)
14:16 (water flowing)
14:18 (water flowing)
14:21 (water flowing)
14:24 (projector whirring)
