03:16 Hey guys, how's it going?
03:22 It has been a really, really nice day today.
03:25 It kind of started last night.
03:27 You probably saw I got out and I got some raspberries picked
03:29 not 100% of them because there were wasps everywhere.
03:33 So I skipped a few sections where I need to go look
03:35 and see if there's a nest somewhere.
03:37 I'm thinking there might be because they were pretty thick
03:40 but I got enough to make some raspberry jam.
03:42 I made two different batches.
03:43 One with our red heritage raspberries
03:46 and a half batch of fall gold raspberry jam.
03:49 And here they are 13 jars of various sizes.
03:52 I just cobbled together whatever jars I could find
03:54 that were close at hand.
03:56 These are still a touch warm, but they are beautiful.
04:01 Absolutely beautiful.
04:02 Everything looks like they've set beautifully.
04:05 The fall gold, I did half sugar.
04:07 I did a low sugar recipe for these
04:08 because they are so sweet.
04:10 Let me put these in the sun.
04:12 Let's take a look.
04:13 Yeah, you can see a little bit better what that looks like.
04:16 I always wondered what this would look like
04:18 if I did just a hundred percent fall golds.
04:20 Now I did not remove any of the seeds for this variety
04:23 because the seeds are soft.
04:24 They don't really make a difference
04:26 like the seeds in the red.
04:27 There's a jar of the red,
04:28 removed about half of the seeds from those.
04:30 And it's just beautiful.
04:33 Like jewels in there.
04:34 So that's kind of been my morning.
04:36 It's just been so relaxed and wonderful,
04:38 but we are gonna get out.
04:39 Erin is going to fertilize the grass
04:41 and share some details about that with you.
04:43 And then I have a couple of things
04:44 that I wanna get in the ground.
04:45 But real quick, a couple of details about the raspberries.
04:48 We planted all of the heritage red raspberries
04:51 went in in 2021.
04:52 So two years ago.
04:53 And then the fall golds, half of them went in that year,
04:56 2021, and then I couldn't get my hands on any
04:58 until this spring.
04:59 I planted the other half of the row
05:01 and the rows are 30 feet long and three feet wide.
05:03 And I've gone into pretty good detail,
05:06 I think in past videos,
05:07 maybe we can link one down below
05:08 about how we prune these or how to prune them.
05:11 We do the easy approach.
05:12 While an everbearing variety can bear through the season,
05:15 like it'll give you a June crop
05:16 and then a later crop in the season.
05:19 I treat mine all the same
05:20 and I go in and just mow them all down.
05:22 Late winter, early spring, I just cut them all down,
05:25 which forfeits your early crop.
05:26 So you do miss out on that,
05:28 but it gives you a bigger bumper crop
05:30 about this time of year
05:31 where you just get a massive amount of berries.
05:33 And honestly, with everything we have going on here,
05:36 I don't wanna have to pick raspberries
05:38 all throughout the summer.
05:39 It's kind of nice to have things happen in stages.
05:42 So our strawberries are kind of the same way.
05:44 There's June bearing strawberries
05:46 and half of our row is June bearing.
05:47 So those are all done for the season.
05:49 We got a huge amount this spring.
05:51 Half of the row is everbearing
05:52 and they just keep on producing all through the season.
05:55 And while that's awesome,
05:56 it's something you just have to keep in the forefront
05:58 of your mind to get out there and pick them
05:59 so that they don't go to waste.
06:01 So with the raspberries,
06:02 I prefer them all to come at one time
06:04 and they've been bearing for weeks now.
06:06 So, and they will bear through a frost.
06:09 So it's a pretty good harvest window, I think.
06:11 Anyway, I just used the pectin, like the powder pectin,
06:14 and I follow the recipe that's in the little pamphlet
06:17 that comes in the box.
06:18 So I did a low sugar one for the fall golds,
06:20 the full sugar one for the red raspberry.
06:23 My brother's actually here somewhere.
06:25 He's out looking at the pond with Aaron, I think.
06:27 And I'm gonna send him home with a couple of jars
06:29 because he loves raspberry jam.
06:30 But it just feels good to get some of that stuff canned.
06:33 I'm doing a little bit better of a job
06:35 getting stuff preserved that we can use this winter,
06:37 but I'm only canning stuff that I know we will eat.
06:40 Anyway, for the rest of our day,
06:41 let's run out and get some plants and put them in the ground
06:43 and then Aaron's gonna show us the fertilizing.
06:45 All right, guys, so I've got two different varieties
06:47 of things we're gonna be putting in the ground today,
06:49 both of which are brand new varieties for this year.
06:51 One is an Arborvita called Sting,
06:54 and the other one is a Dervella or Direvella.
06:57 I don't even, I don't know if I'm saying that right,
06:59 but it's called Kodiak Fresh.
07:00 Real quick though, before I get into their details,
07:02 I did wanna mention what I fertilize our raspberries with
07:05 because I feel like it bears repeating
07:07 because they are doing so well out there.
07:08 First off, they do get full sun.
07:10 They do get consistent drip irrigation.
07:13 And then I came in when I pruned them this spring,
07:15 I gave them, I think I gave them
07:17 both Holly Tone and Berry Tone.
07:18 I think I may have run out of the Berry Tone
07:20 and I used Holly Tone.
07:22 You could use Garden Tone, Plant Tone,
07:24 any of the tones really,
07:25 and do a first of the season application of fertilizer
07:29 and they will thank you for it.
07:30 That's all they've received this year,
07:32 other than at the same time I gave the fertilizer,
07:35 I did put some soil acidifier around them
07:37 because they do prefer a slightly acidic soil.
07:39 We're pretty high pH.
07:40 So I think using both of those things
07:43 and then the consistency of sun and water
07:44 has really kind of done wonders for those plants.
07:47 So anyway, let's talk about these.
07:49 So this plant right here, this is so cool.
07:51 This is an Arborvita called Sting.
07:54 Now it's a brand new one, like I said, this year.
07:56 The cool thing about this one
07:58 is that it grows 15 to 20 feet tall
08:02 and stays only 12 to 18 inches wide.
08:05 Like an absolute pencil growing up out of your flower bed.
08:08 I can't wait to see how these do.
08:09 I do have three of them because I feel like
08:11 with the type of space we have out here,
08:13 you know, our flower beds are pretty far reaching.
08:15 What is that?
08:16 Oh, it's a black wasp carrying a big spider.
08:24 Ooh.
08:26 Like that was big enough to where it distracted me.
08:29 My word.
08:30 Oh my gosh.
08:31 So with the flower beds being a little bit bigger
08:34 and kind of spreading out,
08:35 I felt like putting three of them semi-close together
08:37 in a group might bring a little bit more impact and weight.
08:40 However, the fact that they grow so tall,
08:42 I think will bring impact no matter what.
08:44 And I feel like this is a real solution for smaller spaces
08:49 where you need evergreen impact.
08:50 You want some vertical height,
08:52 but you don't have the space to let something
08:54 get super wide.
08:55 They're also a zone three through eight.
08:56 So really, really tough.
08:58 In fact, I'm over here.
09:00 You can see kind of on, well,
09:02 the furthest South point of our property right in here.
09:05 You can see, we kind of have this strip left over.
09:07 We have some things that are going to get wide.
09:09 Like that service berry will get rather wide.
09:12 I've got a lilac right here that'll fill in,
09:14 but I kind of want to tuck some stuff in here
09:16 that stays really narrow.
09:17 But the thing is our neighbors have this glorious bank
09:21 of trees that I love.
09:22 And I'm so thankful for them.
09:24 But when the sun is lower in the sky in the winter time,
09:27 it creates a huge shadow over this part of our flower bed.
09:31 This stays the coldest spot, the wettest spot,
09:34 the spot that has ice the longest.
09:36 It's just our most, our coldest spot on our property.
09:39 So having something that can handle that will be great.
09:42 The other plant we have here, the Kodiak Fresh.
09:46 Now I've planted the Kodiak Orange Drivellas.
09:49 It's up by our Versailles garden and they've done great.
09:51 This one stays a little bit smaller,
09:53 two to three feet tall and wide.
09:54 It kind of brings that bright green,
09:57 almost like a chartreuse sort of vibe.
09:59 But you guys, when the new growth comes out, it's orange.
10:01 And then the whole thing will turn to like this bright glow
10:05 of orange in the fall.
10:06 And usually they have yellow flowers,
10:09 like clusters of yellow flowers throughout the whole shrub
10:12 all season long.
10:13 Like they're almost never without flowers.
10:15 And this is also a problem solver plant
10:17 because they can take any light that you want to give them.
10:21 They can take full shade.
10:22 They can take full sun.
10:23 They will color up better and bloom better
10:25 if they have more sun,
10:26 but they can take full shade and they will thrive.
10:28 And they can take dry shade as well.
10:30 So they're kind of like the dogwood in that way,
10:33 in that the dogwoods will also color up better
10:36 and all of that if they're given full sun,
10:37 but they can take quite a bit of shade as well.
10:39 These are also a zone three through eight plant.
10:42 They are deer resistant
10:43 and they can take really crummy soil.
10:46 Like you can pretty much throw anything at this one
10:49 and it's gonna handle it.
10:50 So long as it can grow in your zone.
10:51 So I wanna try these stings out first and see what we think
10:56 because they're kind of small on the small side right now,
10:58 we probably won't be able to see them very well
11:00 until they get a little bit taller
11:02 when you're inside the flower bed.
11:03 I'm thinking of like,
11:04 having three of them right in here
11:10 because this will grow and fill in this section
11:12 that will grow in and fill that.
11:14 So if we've got something tall and thin right in here,
11:16 like a group, that might be perfect,
11:19 but they would also look really,
11:20 well, I thought about putting them here too,
11:23 but see that's an Apollo maple
11:24 and it grows 10 feet wide and it stays very narrow
11:27 and I don't really want too much of the same shape,
11:30 like right next to each other.
11:31 Okay, I'm gonna get this figured out.
11:33 We're gonna get these planted
11:34 and then I'll show you where they end up.
11:35 (upbeat music)
11:38 (upbeat music continues)
11:41 (upbeat music continues)
12:11 I have set an anthill, oh my gosh.
12:13 They were crawling on my arms before I realized it.
12:18 All right, we gotta get this one done fast.
12:20 (upbeat music)
12:22 (upbeat music continues)
12:26 And there they are.
12:47 I think they're gonna just fit perfectly.
12:49 I mean, 12 to 18 inches, you guys.
12:51 There's still gonna be air between these.
12:54 That's just wild to me that they will get that tall,
12:58 yet stay so skinny.
13:00 And I'm gonna pop over here.
13:01 I could see them when they were still in their containers
13:04 from the front, oh, sort of.
13:06 You can kind of see them popped back in there.
13:08 I needed them to be far enough away from the service barrier
13:11 that they won't be in the way of the canopy of that one
13:14 and still far enough away from the lilac to be all right.
13:17 And I think that the placement's gonna be just perfect
13:19 right there, kind of right behind this little drift
13:23 of hollyhocks.
13:25 So I'd imagine those like, well, that tall.
13:28 Yeah, amazing.
13:30 Minus the anthill, I could have gone
13:33 without having my knees right straight in an anthill.
13:36 How's it going out here?
13:41 - I'm about ready to do some vlogging.
13:43 - Good for you.
13:44 - It's nice to be over here.
13:45 - That's awesome.
13:46 Oh, that might look nice.
13:48 (upbeat music)
13:50 (upbeat music continues)
13:54 (upbeat music continues)
13:57 (upbeat music continues)
14:01 (upbeat music continues)
14:04 (upbeat music continues)
14:07 (upbeat music continues)
14:11 (upbeat music continues)
14:14 (upbeat music continues)
14:40 (upbeat music continues)
14:43 All right, so the Kodiak Fresh all ended up
14:49 over on this side, but they are all separate.
14:51 I set them out initially all around the base
14:54 of these birch trees because it will end up
14:56 being a shaded area, but it was just too much
14:58 of the same texture.
14:59 I felt like having that bright yellow
15:01 in just like an individual pop here and there
15:03 might be nice.
15:04 So first one right there, I love it.
15:06 I think it's gonna be perfect there
15:07 because we've got all the colors.
15:09 We've got blue, we've got yellow,
15:12 we've got red and we've got green.
15:13 And those are the four colors that we always look for
15:15 in each spot.
15:17 Even if you use just like the tiniest amount of red
15:20 or the tiniest amount of yellow,
15:21 it just is always such a cohesive,
15:24 pretty looking area to me.
15:26 So again, these will grow two to three feet tall and wide.
15:29 They're not gonna overtake this space.
15:30 This is the Dark Star Ninebark that gets
15:33 about four feet wide and five feet tall.
15:34 So it'll be a nice back layer.
15:36 And then this grass will get enormous.
15:38 So the grass can kind of fill in this section right here.
15:41 And this one will kind of like poof out
15:43 of the bottom of the grass.
15:44 The other one ended up just down the way a little bit.
15:47 Oh, the sedum right here.
15:49 I gotta take some of the drip out.
15:50 It is struggling 'cause it's staying way too wet.
15:52 So just ignore that.
15:54 It'll be fine, I think, after we fix the water.
15:57 But we've got two more Ninebarks.
15:58 There's one here and one here.
16:00 And then one more of the Kodiak Fresh,
16:02 which just so pretty.
16:04 They look so soft and I think having the red
16:06 with that bright pop of green right next to it will be nice.
16:10 Other one is over here.
16:11 On the way, I've got to show you guys these blackberries.
16:15 They are enormous.
16:17 Look at these.
16:18 They're huge.
16:19 We were out here eating them last night.
16:21 These are actually not quite ready.
16:23 Usually they fall right off the plant
16:25 when they're ready to go.
16:27 These are still holding on a bit.
16:28 These have really taken off this season, like big time.
16:32 There's a huge cluster of them over there.
16:34 I need to tame these up a little bit, my goodness.
16:39 But the other one is just in this little pocket back here
16:42 because there wasn't anything that was super bright.
16:44 You know, we've got green and lighter green.
16:46 The daylilies kind of have that light green,
16:48 but nothing with that kind of vibrancy.
16:50 So I think that's gonna be nice.
16:52 We've got a couple of honeyberries in here,
16:54 some Firefly Peach Sky Yarrow.
16:56 There's some Baptisia, the random Russian Sage.
17:00 And then these are the King of Ages.
17:02 Daylilies, which are kind of a peachy color.
17:04 Well, you can see that.
17:05 And then they have a dark maroon throat.
17:07 Look at how that shines right there.
17:09 So nice.
17:11 (metal clanging)
17:39 Okay, I'm about ready to fertilize the lawn
17:41 and I will show you what I'm gonna use
17:43 and my fertilizer spreader.
17:45 I'm actually really happy with this spreader.
17:47 I bought it a couple years ago.
17:49 It's a Frontier SS1035B.
17:52 And if you look on the website,
17:54 you'll have a hard time finding it.
17:55 But I bought it through my John Deere dealer
17:57 and they got it in.
17:59 It's not a PTO driven, it's wheel driven
18:03 and just hooks up to either a lawnmower or a gator
18:06 or, you know, whatever you got.
18:08 And it's been great.
18:10 I accidentally dropped it one time
18:12 and got this little dent in it.
18:15 But you know what?
18:16 It's just, it adds character.
18:19 There you go.
18:20 Okay, so here's what I'm using.
18:22 We just got a nice pallet of stuff in.
18:25 I actually need to use the summer revitalizer,
18:28 which is down below and I have to move all these.
18:31 I don't know if I should put them on top of the tree tone
18:33 or just maybe like set another pile.
18:36 Ah, but anyway.
18:37 So I pretty much use all four of Espoma's
18:41 lawn food products.
18:43 They have a spring feed, an all seasons feed,
18:46 and then they've got the summer revitalizer,
18:48 which is the yellow bag and a fall application,
18:51 which I'll probably do in about a month or so.
18:53 I'm probably about a month late
18:55 on putting the summer revitalizer down.
18:57 I think you're supposed to do that sometime
18:59 like July through August.
19:02 And it's the beginning of September.
19:03 I don't think it's that big of a deal.
19:05 We have a pretty long growing season.
19:06 So I've got plenty of time to put this down
19:09 and then another month to six weeks,
19:13 I'll put down the fall winterizer.
19:16 So anyway, let me just fill up the spreader
19:20 and it can take around,
19:22 I wanna say maybe like seven, eight, nine bags at a time.
19:28 (leaves crunching)
19:31 (leaves crunching)
19:34 (leaves crunching)
19:37 (leaves crunching)
19:39 (leaves crunching)
19:42 (leaves crunching)
19:45 (leaves crunching)
19:49 (leaves crunching)
19:52 (door slams)
19:54 (leaves crunching)
19:57 (door slams)
20:06 (leaves crunching)
20:09 That was eight bags.
20:19 So now let's go spread it.
20:20 I wish I could tell you what setting I put it on,
20:22 but I honestly just eyeball it every single time.
20:24 Let me show you what I do.
20:26 You know it's good fertilizer
20:27 'cause the flies are going nuts over it.
20:29 Organic.
20:30 Okay, so this little lever,
20:33 you pull out to release the material.
20:36 So I kind of have to hit it pretty hard
20:40 and I let it go all the way.
20:44 And then I push it back in just a little bit.
20:46 So it's not like a hundred percent wide open.
20:48 (metal clanking)
20:50 No, like that.
20:51 That's how scientific I am.
20:54 (leaves crunching)
20:56 (metal clanking)
21:04 (leaves crunching)
21:14 (leaves crunching)
21:17 Okay, I don't know how well you could see me spreading it.
21:34 I looked on the website
21:35 and one bag covers 5,000 square feet.
21:37 I know that I've got about an acre of grass out here.
21:42 So that was pretty close.
21:44 I didn't quite get the whole thing done.
21:47 I need about one more bag, which would be about right.
21:50 So, 'cause an acre is what, like 4,300 square feet?
21:53 So it should take about nine bags
21:55 to get the whole thing done.
21:56 So I'm gonna do all the peripheral areas,
21:58 like on the outside.
21:59 Where's my finger?
22:00 There it is.
22:01 Like the east side lane.
22:02 And then I don't know if you can see it,
22:03 but the loop over here.
22:05 So I'll probably put another eight bags in there
22:07 since that's about all I can fit.
22:08 And hopefully I should be able to cover
22:10 all the rest of our grass with that.
22:11 Okay, I just went and got my drone
22:13 so that hopefully you can see the paths
22:15 that I'm taking a little better here in the South Garden.
22:18 I'm gonna put it up in the air.
22:19 I think I've found the most efficient path
22:23 for these grass pathways out here.
22:25 And you guys will have to watch
22:27 and tell me if you think that I can be any more efficient
22:30 without stopping or going over the same areas too many times.
22:35 There's two spots where I'm gonna go over the same spot,
22:38 but I just figure, you know what?
22:39 It's just, it is what it is.
22:41 But I think this is the most efficient path.
22:43 So tell me what you think.
22:44 (gunshot)
22:47 (grass rustling)
23:10 (upbeat music)
23:12 (upbeat music)
23:15 (upbeat music)
23:17 (upbeat music)
23:20 (upbeat music)
23:23 (upbeat music)
23:25 (upbeat music)
23:28 (upbeat music)
23:30 (upbeat music)
23:49 (upbeat music)
23:52 All right, all done fertilizing.
24:00 I did the South Garden.
24:01 And like I said, I think I've got my loop
24:04 about as efficient as I can make it
24:06 without going over the same spot too many times.
24:08 And then I did the East side, we call it the East side strip
24:12 or at least I do the grass strip right along here.
24:15 And then I use what was left just to do this section
24:18 kind of for a second time.
24:21 And so it was about 15 bags, I think.
24:24 I don't think I put a total of eight bags in the second run.
24:28 So 15 bags total.
24:30 I'm really happy with how the grass is looking this year.
24:33 You know, it looks a little stressed in the summertime.
24:36 It gets a little bit yellow,
24:37 but overall it's looking really good
24:40 and I'm really happy with it.
24:42 - And you guys, that is it for today's video.
24:43 Kind of a menagerie again, you know,
24:45 the Raspberry Jam got that done.
24:47 Check that off the list.
24:48 Got a couple of things in the ground
24:49 and then Aaron shared some details on his lawn fertilizing,
24:52 which thank you to Aaron for doing that.
24:54 It's not really in his comfort zone to film himself,
24:58 but I think he's getting more comfortable with it.
25:00 And I know that you guys seem to enjoy when he comes on
25:02 and I love it.
25:03 It's really nice because he shares a different perspective
25:05 and also different knowledge
25:06 because he's tackling different things than I am out here.
25:09 So it's definitely a collaborative effort
25:11 between many of us out here to get it done.
25:14 So anyway, thank you guys so much for watching this video.
25:16 I hope you enjoyed it and we will see you in the next one.
