00:00 Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03 A controversial planning application for a battery energy storage system on farmland in North Derbyshire has been conditionally approved by the District Authority.
00:13 The site for the proposed system covers one field and the corner of another at Cailo Green Farm and Nether House Farm in Cailo,
00:21 and will be used to store energy from renewables like solar and wind and then released when the power is needed most.
00:27 But safety concerns have been lodged with the council.
00:30 Jonathan Forwood of Hall Flash Farm in Cailo wrote that the proposed battery contains highly volatile chemicals.
00:37 He added, "It doesn't take a genius to work out that putting these on top of a well-documented, potentially explosive gas field lacks any type of common sense."
00:47 The planning authority granted permission with a number of strings attached.
00:51 These include that a contaminated land assessment is carried out prior to the start of any development,
00:57 to check for the likely presence of potentially hazardous gases, and to assess the potential risk to human health and to local property.
01:05 The owner of an XL Bully Dog, which has been brightening the lives of elderly people at a Chesterfield care home, has defended the controversial dog breed.
01:14 Charlie Gale's dog Bruce has been doing the rounds at Chesterfield's Brook Home care home since he was a puppy, as a therapy dog.
01:21 She said, "He's just so gentle and soft with the residents. A lot of them struggle for a reason to move, but he just brightens up their day."
01:29 However, following the announcement by PM Rishi Sunak on Friday that the breed is now banned,
01:34 current Bully XL owners are now required to keep their animals muzzled while they're in public.
01:39 Charlie, who is 32 weeks pregnant and says that she trusts Bruce completely with children, has had the dog since he was 10 weeks old.
01:47 Speaking about the new law, Charlie said, "I think it's disgusting. Quite clearly not all XL Bullies are dangerous.
01:54 The problem is with people who get these dogs as status symbols.
01:57 Something needs to be done about it, but a ban is a step too far. It's the owners, not the dogs."
