Public education in Puerto Rico will be reeling under the harsh austerity measures adopted by the island's government. Even though per capita spending on education is 20% less than in the continental U.S., mass layoffs of teachers and closing of schools is being contemplated. If this occurs, it will increase the gap between private and public education.
