00:00Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:15We begin with the news.
00:17In Venezuela, the Supreme Court of Justice reiterated the summons to the former presidential
00:21candidates of the elections held on July 28th.
00:24The president of the Supreme Court of Justice, Carizlia RodrĂguez, emphasized that all the
00:29summoned persons have been notified.
00:32At the same time, she reminded the date and time when each candidate must appear before
00:37the court in order to file all the electoral instruments of legal relevance that are in
00:42possession of the political parties.
00:44Moreover, RodrĂguez reiterated the importance of the attendance of all former candidates,
00:49while pointing out that failure to do so would entail the consequences set forth in
00:55the legal system in force.
01:02In Venezuela, authorities paid tribute to the liberator SimĂłn BolĂvar and his army
01:07after commemorating 200 years of the Battle of UnĂn.
01:11Different activities were held at the National Pantheon in Caracas, including a military
01:15parade made up by several leaders of the Bolivarian Armed Forces.
01:20Venezuelan Vice President, Dulce RodrĂguez, pointed out that this battle was the end of
01:24the power of the Spanish Empire in the lands of South America, thanks to the struggle of
01:30BolĂvar's army that always called for the union of the peoples.
01:34The Vice-Mandatory also emphasized the importance of the Battle of UnĂn being a point of inspiration
01:40in the independence, determination and sovereignty of Venezuela.
01:51This Tuesday the Bolivarian National Armed Forces ratified its full support to President
01:56NicolĂĄs Maduro after his re-election last July 28th.
02:00Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino LĂłpez rejected the statement issued by MarĂa Corina Machado
02:05and former presidential candidate Edmundo GonzĂĄlez, in which they exhorted the armed
02:10forces to violate constitutional laws.
02:12Meanwhile, Padrino LĂłpez stated that security forces are battling against the coup d'Ă©tat
02:17operated by social media and cyber attacks.
02:20For its part, the Strategic Vision of Integral Defense supported the Venezuelan President
02:25on the decision of the Venezuelan people that democratically elected NicolĂĄs Maduro as
02:29President of the South American country for the 2025-2031 term.
02:40We reaffirm our absolute loyalty to citizen NicolĂĄs Maduro Moros, constitutional president
02:45of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, commander-in-chief of the Bolivarian National Armed Force, who
02:51has been legitimately re-elected by the people for the next presidential term of 2025-2031.
02:59The defense minister condemned the destabilizing attempts of the so-called Comanditos led by
03:03MarĂa Corina Machado.
03:07Now they are trying to tarnish the electoral process by means of the well-known script
03:11of violence, this time resorting to the ill-named Comanditos, which are really fourth-generation
03:16criminal gangs with which they have established alliances, in order to control the political
03:21power that they were unable to achieve with the votes.
03:25It is important to clarify that their government plan is highly neo-colonialist.
03:28Likewise, Padrino LĂłpez warned that the far-right continues with its plan to create a deceptive
03:36argument of an alleged electoral victory in order to carry on manipulating a sector
03:41of the population.
03:43Meanwhile, this fascist current continues trying to position the thesis of an electoral
03:51victory that they wanted to build on the basis of fake polls and an orchestrated media campaign
03:57to create fictitious expectations in a single sector of the population that they intend
04:02to continue deceiving and manipulating.
04:07Femicides are on the rise in Panama, taking into account the under-reporting of abuse
04:11and violence.
04:12Rosa, a 25-year-old woman with a psychosocial condition and in a vulnerable condition, was
04:18burned alive while resting in the annex of a kiosk.
04:22People in Panama are demanding justice for Rosa.
04:26Rosa RodrĂguez was a 25-year-old Panamanian woman with a psychosocial condition for which
04:32she was taking medicine, but when her parents couldn't afford to buy her pills, she suffered
04:37disorientation, which even caused her not to come home for several days.
04:41Unfortunately, on July 20, she no longer returned to her home.
04:47She is not a homeless person, as many have heard on the news, on the media, on the social
04:52networks.
04:53She was not a homeless person, she was a person who lost her way back home as she was deprived
04:58of her drugs.
04:59Ask yourselves if an indigent person has the ability to paint nails, to fix hair, to apply
05:04makeup.
05:05No, right?
05:06So, in two or three days, I don't think she could hurt someone by lying down on the streets.
05:12Because that was what she did, lying down on the streets.
05:15Rosa's corpse was found in a kiosk located in Mojo de Agua near a busy bus stop on the
05:21outskirts of the canal capital.
05:23She was doused with gasoline and burned alive while resting at the edge of a market stall
05:29next to the bus stop.
05:30This case adds to the nine femicides registered up to June this year, and it is part of a
05:37growing spiral of violence against women.
05:40We have a teaching role to play.
05:46We cannot continue to normalize behaviors that are openly signs that indicate acts of
05:51violence against women.
05:54We have to work on educational matters, even though regulations establish it, but we do
05:59not include in our schools this subject so that our young people learn from adolescence
06:04to recognize these signs.
06:07We continue to fight off and strive for the adequate and effective implementation of electronic
06:13bracelets, which is a later measure, but they can be useful to protect the lives of women.
06:20The woman's ministry stated to back Rosa's family while the prosecutor's office is investigating
06:26the case.
06:27In addition, activists are demanding her case doesn't go unpunished, a common occurrence
06:31when victims are from the working class.
06:33They are further requesting the state to pursue and enforce mental health and women's protection
06:38laws and programs.
06:42Disability here in Panama is a taboo subject.
06:46People do not know the cost of medicines, of treatments, in the different conditions
06:51of the injustices that occur.
06:54For me, this is very shocking because it raises awareness in a community that does not feel
07:00it, that does not live it in their homes, and that we parents have to work wonders with
07:05our incomes to be able to afford private therapies.
07:09I know what that lady suffered, why?
07:13Because I watch every day how many parents don't have economic resources to afford treatments.
07:19And unfortunately, laws do exist, because regulations exist, but they are not being
07:25properly supervised.
07:26A recent study from Santa Maria, Antigua University revealed that making visible those women on
07:32streets is to the fullest extent.
07:34Even such invisibility sets them apart from social exclusion, condemning them to high
07:39vulnerability and systemic and structural violence.
