The 7th Summit of the Americans also coincided with the 13th anniversary of the attempted coup against Hugo Chavez's government in Venezuela. The right-wing attempted to seize power and briefly installed business leader Pedro Carmona as president, abolished the constitution, and dissolved the country's democratic institutions, but within 48 hours their plans were thwarted by a popular mobilization in the streets that restored the democratically elected government to office.
