The passenger plane departed from Gatwick Airport in London right before 11:45 a.m. local time. While still in British airspace, Flight VS43 was forced to turn around when the pilots discovered the technical issue.
The plane circled over the UK’s southern coast to dump fuel before it was able to make an emergency landing at the same airport approximately 4 hours after takeoff.
Just prior to the descent, personnel at Virgin Atlantic announced that the plane would be taking part in what they called a “non-standard landing procedure.” Reportedly, passengers were told to assume the crash or brace position.
When the aircraft landed safely, many travelers praised the crew and pilot. One man described the landing as ‘smooth’ however a number of passengers reportedly received minor injuries after the plane touched down at Gatwick.
Emergency crews promptly arrived on scene to assist anyone needing treatment. The issue affected the right main landing gear of the Boeing 747, which meant the aircraft had to land on only three landing gears.
Inbound flights were diverted and planes that were scheduled to depart from Gatwick were postponed as a result of the incident.
