A crowdfunding campaign has been very successful for a young kitten named Muffin. The 6-week-old feline was left partially paralyzed after a procedure for a microchip went wrong.

Last week, the male kitten was discovered on the streets and taken to the Downey Animal Care Center in California. Loran Slama saw him online and decided to rescue the tiny feline.

She went to the facility run by the Los Angeles Department of Animal Control and Care, and part of the adoption process included having a microchip implanted. About a half hour after the procedure, Muffin’s head began to dangle and he no longer looked like a healthy kitten.

He wasn’t able to walk, but was instead left dragging his belly along the floor. Slama soon brought him to a specialist who determined the paralysis is the result of a microchip implantation that is far too close to Muffin’s spine.

Surgery has been scheduled for the kitten at the City of Angels Veterinary Specialty Center. A neurologist is going to try and remove the microchip in the hopes Muffin will once again walk.

Slama commented “It’s a highly risky procedure…. However, we need to do the surgery because the longer the microchip stays into the spine the more damage it can cause.”

The LA county animal department has thus far declined to pay for the operation but while they are investigating, a campaign for Muffin on YouCaring.com has already garnered more than $5,000 in donations.
