Only Whites Can Live In One South African Town

The town of Orania, with a population of 1,000, only allows white people to live there.

In South Africa, apartheid ended twenty years ago. Yet one town remains white-only.

That town would be Orania, which established in 1991 that no black people would be allowed to live there.

With a population of around 1,000 residents, each one is an Afrikaner and only speaks Afrikaans within the community.

Afrikaans is a language descended from Dutch.

The town’s leaders insist, "We are not against black people. We are for ourselves."

Regardless, black people still aren't allowed to live there, and any potential new resident has to be approved by the town's council.

The most important determining factor is whether or not a person is of Afrikaans descent and not merely fluent in the language.

The town became white-only before a black government was elected in 1994, an act that further alienated some Afrikaners.

What this town is doing is protected by South Africa's constitution, falling under the "right to self-determination" clause.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, and the residents of Orania believe fear of crime has led to an almost 10% annual population growth.
