Two of the Silicon Valley’s most influential companies, Facebook and Apple, will pick up the tab when female employees opt to freeze their eggs.

Apple plans to roll out the perk in January, while Facebook has already begun providing the coverage.

The procedure isn’t cheap, initial harvesting typically costs around 10 thousand dollars.

Storing them costs an additional 500 dollar per year.

Opinions on the practice, and the support the companies are offering, varies.

Some feel that it will help level the playing field for women, who are by far the minority in the tech industry.

If they can extend their childbearing years, then they are able to fully pursue competitive and demanding careers without missing the opportunity to have a family.

Others say raising children is never easy, and it’s definitely not going to become more so later in life.

It’s also been noted that encouraging egg freezing suggests that women with children can’t be committed and productive workers.

Views aside, there are hopes that such measures will aid in diversifying the Silicon Valley work pool.

At present, about 70 percent of the workforce at both Apple and Facebook is male.
