Back in June, construction work on a new railway station in Derbyshire was scheduled to start, but great-crested newts put a damper on the plans.

Following the discovery, the project was postponed. Now, the construction work is slated to start in October of this year, which pushes the railway opening date to the Spring of 2015 rather than December of this year, which is when it was originally going to welcome passengers.

Among the UK’s three native species, great-crested newts are the largest. The dark colored creatures have warty skin with a bright orange underside making them stand out. In recent times, the newt population has declined even though the species is protected by law.

The great-crested newts were found on the railway grounds during a routine ecological site examination. Councillor Andy Botham who works for Derbyshire County Council isn’t thrilled about the project postponement.

He remarked “We’re disappointed that these delays mean that we won’t be able to finish the station by December… We know that this will be frustrating for local people, as it is for us, but we are doing all we can to get the station built as quickly as possible.”
