Minnesota’s Mall of America, may be high on the travel list for Americans but, generally speaking, it’s not a destination Chinese folks flock to while visiting the US.

The director of Minnesota's tourism board wants to change that. John Edman recently made it known he’s hoping more tourists will visit the famous mall, especially those who are Chinese.

He remarked “We see the growth in the number of Chinese travelers to the United States. Our goal is to try to make Minnesota in their mindset, maybe not as a primary, but as a secondary destination.”

Currently sights in major cities like New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles make it to the top of the list for China dwelling travelers. For the past five years, the state has been thinking up different ways to lure international visitors to Minnesota.

Plans are now underway with a Chinese firm to promote Minnesota by utilizing local media outlets and tour operators. Mall of America representatives will reportedly take part in touring missions in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai.

Social media will also play a crucial part in marketing the state to tourists. Although China is one country where advertising is needed, the Minnesota tourism board also wants to reach residents of Mexico and France.
