Hawk Attacks Lead to Library Patrons Using Umbrellas for Protection
Unfortunately for numerous library patrons in Port Orange, their encounters with two red-shouldered hawks were far too close for comfort. This past week, the birds have attempted to attack 6 residents outside a local library.
There’s nothing quite like seeing a gorgeous hawk dominating the skies. Unfortunately for numerous library patrons in Port Orange, their encounters with two red-shouldered hawks have been far too close for comfort.
This past week, the birds have attempted to attack 6 residents outside a local library. The hawks managed to injure three of the people, who all suffered from scratches to their heads.
Thankfully nobody was seriously injured and no one required medical attention. However it did prompt authorities in the county to urge library going citizens to use umbrellas to shield themselves from the aggressive creatures.
Officials said the two dive bombing hawks are protecting a nest filled with three babies. The nest is located in a tree right outside the library.
County spokesman Dave Byron commented ‘These birds have sharp talons and they are in protection mode. This leaves the county with few options as we don’t have the ability to move them and wouldn’t consider destroying them.’
In light of the incidents, signs have been installed to alert unsuspecting library goers of the hawks. Umbrellas and escorts are also temporarily being provided to make sure everyone can get in and out of the building safely.
In three or so weeks, the two hawks should calm down, as by then the babies should be able to fly out of the nest on their own.
