Snowy owls that reside in Arctic climates have been seen living further south than ever before, in places like Florida, and Bermuda.

Although the owls are known to migrate for the winter, they don’t usually go south of the Great Lakes area.=

The owls are being found outside of their normal habitat in record numbers, and many of them are young birds on their first migration in search of food.=

The influx of snowy owls has caused problems for airplanes flying out of New York and New Jersey airports, where five planes were hit over a two week period in December.

Officials from Windsor International Airport in Ontario Canada relocated seven snowy owls also during December after tagging them.

Three snowy owls have been observed in the state of Florida, and some bird watchers and conservationists are worried that the snowy owls appear to be skinny and unhealthy.

Experts speculate that either a shortage or an abundance of prey, along with climate change has caused the snowy owls to wander further than they normally would.
