In the evergrowing homogeneous suburban spaces around the world, how does one stand apart?

A Japanese architectural firm called Spacespace recently helped a couple in Nara, Japan get their own sense of individuality.

The company renovated the home, under the project 'reform of garden house'. The residence is located in a suburban area, where all of the houses were built with light gauge steel materials, as part of an effort to reduce construction costs, but it left the neighborhood looking very standard.

Spacespace worked on the exterior of the couple’s home to make it stand apart. The firm added a streamlined and modern appearing concrete plane which stretches along the entire perimeter of the house.

The outdoor space measures almost the same size as the interior living quarters. A concrete staircase spans upwards from a garden, reaching the second floor of the home. The underside of the steps acts as a carport.

Continuing downward, the concrete slab weaves a path around the side of the home and steps, creating an integrated space between the indoors and outdoors.

How do you like it?
