Kiruna, Sweden is located above an iron ore mine that is threatening the stability of the buildings and streets, so they decided the best thing to do was move the entire town.
The 18 thousand people that live in Kiruna are relocating as part of a plan that has taken almost ten years since the state controlled mining company LKAB notified the residents that as they continued to dig, they would destroy the town.
Architectural firm White arkitekter AB have worked on developing the new town after their proposal called Kiruna 4-ever won the design competition.
Monica von Schmalensee the CEO of the firm is quoted on their website as saying: “To design what basically is a completely new city is a historic task and a unparalleled opportunity for us as architects.”
Over 3 thousand apartments and houses, along with hotels, offices, schools, and health care facilities will be moved east over the next two decades.
LKAB mining company is funding the move and the construction of several buildings in the new town’s location.
