Wind Turbine Failed to Weather the Storm
Much to the shock of residents of the Scottish Highlands, a wind turbine was broken apart and scattered across the area by gusts of wind.
Wind is supposed to be good news for a wind turbine.
However, much to the shock of residents of the Scottish Highlands a wind turbine was broken apart and scattered across the area by gusts of wind.
Even though it was graded to withstand air rushes of up to 134 miles per hour – well above the hurricane threshold - it was a 40-mile-per-hour blast that caused two of its blades to break free.
One was reportedly thrown about 60 yards.
A third propeller sustained severe damage.
Of especially great concern is that similar structures are located near playgrounds.
While no one was hurt in this incident, a community group is calling for the removal of all turbines near schools attended by children.
Similar opposition to their presence was presented to the city council about a year ago, at which time 13 were shut down while the risk of damage was assessed.
They were switched back on following the investigation.
At the time, a spokesperson for the Highland council said, "We are satisfied we have put in place the required risk assessments of wind turbines in schools to ensure their safe operation."
