A team of scientists from Imperial College London has reported they’ve found some remarkable similarities in the way the human and bird brains are wired.

Their path to this discovery involved mapping the neurological regions of the bird’s brains to determine how they are connected and process information, the first time such a task has ever been undertaken.
By comparing the results with mammalian brains including humans, they realized there are similarities in the way the brains are wired.
This is despite hundreds of millions of years of independent evolution.
The team believes this introduces the possibility that evolution has developed a common plan for high level cognition.
In addition to giving birds the credit they deserve, the study was successful in achieving its goal, which was to explore the functioning of animals’ brains to create a computer model that copies the way they function.
Ultimately the team would like to use the computer model to construct artificial brains for robots.
The lead scientists also said that using the maps to build an artificial brain is part of the bigger, longer-term plan.
