Amtrak Gets New Locomotives

Amtrak gets new locomotives.

Amtrak is upgrading some of their equipment, by testing three new locomotives.

These are the first of 70 new trains that will replace the ones Amtrak has been using for over 25 years, some of which have traveled up to 4 and a half million miles.

The Northeast Corridor route will be serviced with the new locomotives, that can travel at speeds of up to 125 miles an hour, from Washington D.C. to Boston, along with the Keystone route from Philadelphia to Harrisburg.

These new model locomotives will reportedly save 300 million dollars in energy costs

Karen Hedlund, deputy administrator at the Federal Railroad Administration said: “Investing in manufacturing these 70 new locomotives are creating and preserving jobs in 60 cities across the country, while meeting the growing demand for improved reliability and service along the Northeast and Keystone Corridors.”

Another upgrade that Amtrak is making involves train ticket scanning.

Working together with Apple, they have created a bar code scanning system for smartphones that replaces the paper ticket punching system.
