The robo-fly is tethered to a power source as a battery small enough to carry and maintain its maneuvering abilities has not been invented yet.

The researchers think in the future that the robots could be used for search and rescue missions in difficult to reach places, or maybe as environmental monitoring devices that can sense chemicals.
