Is Eating Eyeballs Acceptable?

Cultural difference when it comes to eating eyeballs.

Have you ever eaten eyeballs?

There are many dishes that contain the eyeballs of different animals, but a lot of people are grossed out by the idea of eating an eye.

It is uncommon for Americans to be served animals that are whole, or still have the head attached.

The most popular kind of animal eyes served for eating are fish eyes, which are a delicacy in some Asian countries.

James Serpell, director of the Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society at the University of Pennsylvania said: “Eyes represent faces, and it's through the face that we learn to recognize and empathize with others. So it's not entirely surprising that we find eyeballs disconcerting."

Among the dishes that contain eyeballs, the whole fish soup is quite common in various parts of Asia and elsewhere.

In some cultures, heads of other animals can be found on the dinner table as well. For instance, a traditional dish in Norway involves a sheep's head on your platter.

What do you think? Would you try a dish that had eyeballs in it?
