Number 5 – Today we are fortunate to have fire departments and emergency workers who can get to a scene of a fire in a matter of a few minutes. Back in 1913, firemen were dependent on horse-drawn fire fighting units which, depending on the location, could take quite some time to reach, as in the case of a damaging fire on this day in Staten Island. The steep hills to reach the fire put a strain on the horses and they were forced to rest before they could continue.
Number 4 – One hundred years ago India was under the rule of the vast British Empire. The British commissioned an American artist to travel to India and paint the Rulers of the Rajputana States.
Number 3 – Experts say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and many cereal manufacturers today advertise the energy benefits their hot and cold cereals will give you. Believe it or not, this claim in advertising is not new. Back 100 years ago, Postum Cereal Company was advertising that their Post Tavern Special hot cereal would “give everyone energy and vim on a cold January morning”.
Number 2 – An immigration bill pending in Congress which would force immigrants to take a literacy test was being reviewed by President William H Taft. Taft set up a hearing which would allow prominent members of the Jewish community to have their voices heard. Taft eventually vetoed that bill.
