A new record for the dwindling population of Japan was reached in 2012.

The number of people living in Japan decreased by point 2 percent over the past year.

The population of Japan stands at around 127.8 million according to a report from Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in October of 2012.

Not surprisingly, Fukushima prefecture had the largest population loss with 1.9 percent of the population following the tsunami.

Tokyo’s population increased by point 28 percent.

Japan is one of the world’s oldest societies where the median age is 44 according to a 2009 United Nations report.

Senior citizens age 65 and older make up about 23 point 3 percent of Japan’s whole population.

Japan is home to the world’s third largest economy after the United States and China.

Over the coming 40 years, the number of people who are of working age is going to decrease significantly, which is likely to affect their economic growth.
