An Indonesian province bans women from straddling motorbikes.

Women’s rights are something that can be easily taken for granted. A city in Aceh province in Indonesia recently ruled that women who are passengers on motorcycles must sit “side straddled”, meaning that both of their legs must dangle to one side only.

A city official states “Women sitting on motorbikes must not sit astride because it will provoke the male driver. It's improper for women to sit astride. We implement Islamic law here.”

Females are only allowed to ride in the straight straddle position if they are driving. The new law comes after a set of rulings which prohibited women from wearing tight pants and another law which entailed stoning adulterers.

Last year, a village in Northern India banned women from using mobile phones. If women are caught using the devices, they have to pay hefty fines.
Village residents, many of them elderly citizens were mostly in favor of the ban. A local official stated "Mobile phone is the cause of all evils in our society including increasing love affairs and the incidents of elopement.”
