Managing Diet on Vacation - Nutrition Tips - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Vacation is a time to relax. It is a time to take the rules off, right? It is a time to not be on a diet; it is a time to just indulge. Well, sort of. Here is a really good set of tips for you. If you are thinking about indulging on vacation, first of all, do not worry so much. It is a small period of time, unless you are going on vacation for six months, in which case I am really jealous. If you are going on vacation, it is usually about a week. A week out of your entire year is not going to be a really big deal. If you are going to Italy, have the pasta. Have the gelato, too by the way. If you are going to China, have the stir-fry. If you are going to Japan, have the sushi. Try to eat local. That is one of the things that can be really fun. The other piece here is, when you indulge, do not skimp. If you are going on vacation and you are going to the Midwest to visit the cousins, you are not going to settle for the Costco sheet cake. You are going to wait until you get to Aunt Judy’s Double Chocolate Death Triple Layer Cake. That is the piece you are going to have. You are going to wait. You are going to say, “I can hold out for that one.” Then, be present for it. When you have that indulgence, whether it is the plate of pasta or that piece of amazing Death Chocolate Cake, be there for it. Be present; pay attention. Enjoy every morsel, every bite, because that is really why you are having it. It is not about being all distracted; it is about being present for that special occasion. You are in Italy, for heaven’s sake! You are having gelato that was made on the street corner. Be there for it because it is a once in a lifetime experience for most people. If you do not skimp, if you indulge, and if you get the best you can, you are going to have a lot more fun. You will actually end up eating less. Another piece that you can use is to make sure that you have that indulgence, and generally, when I am talking about indulgence, I am talking about dessert, have it after a meal. Right after a meal. Do not have it instead of a meal, have it right after a meal. You are not hungry then. You are not going to run the risk of having two or three; you are going to have one, and you are going to love it. Enjoy. Relax. Have a vacation.
