Russell Crowe helped to kick off the 63rd Cannes Film Festival with the world premiere of his film Robin Hood.

He was joined at the event's first major red carpet by a host of A-listers including co-star Cate Blanchett, who plays Marion Loxley in the epic. Director Ridley Scott was unable to attend.

Palme d'Or jurors Tim Burton and Kate Beckinsale, plus Hollywood actresses Helen Mirren, Salma Hayek and Eva Longoria also made the opening night festivities at the famous Palais des Festivals.

Fifty films are expected to be shown during the 12 day event, 19 of which are in the running for the prestigious Palme d'Or prize.

British director Ken Loach will compete for the honour with his movie Route Irish. Fellow Brit filmmaker Mike Leigh is also in contention and will screen his latest work Another Year.
