This Thursday and Friday, severe storms are making a comeback in the Midwest.
Transcript
00:00Northern Michigan has been facing some of this snow as well.
00:02Yeah, it's a similar situation. We just can't get rid of winter.
00:06Let's try to hang on here.
00:08The good news, though, things are warming up.
00:10So the snow you're seeing on the map here, it's not going to last long.
00:13It might actually already be gone there into northern Michigan.
00:17It's really just a couple counties that have reported snow totals in the last 24 hours here.
00:21Just under six inches.
00:22We have another one that's just about two inches.
00:25Because either way, it's a couple of inches of snow when you would probably rather not have any snow.
00:30But let me show you what's happened also the last 24 hours.
00:35Temperatures have warmed up.
00:36We are seeing the warmer air moving in Chicago.
00:39Unfortunately, the exception to the rule here, you've actually cooled down by seven degrees over the last 24 hours.
00:46But overall, you kind of get the message here, right?
00:49Spring, it's really trying to kick winter out of here, saying, no, this is my season.
00:53And the other kind of sign of spring, the rain and the thunderstorms, that returns tomorrow a little bit more widespread than what we're dealing with far to the south today.
01:02We do have a severe potential to talk about, though.
01:04Even a level two out of four moderate risk area here, including places like Sioux City, Omaha, Des Moines here.
01:10This is mainly because of large hail.
01:12This event overall is a damaging wind event mostly.
01:15But we could see that large hail that really led to our forecasting team of meteorologists to pull the trigger on that moderate risk area.
01:24And as a reminder, let's talk about what we mean when we say large hail, some of the hail sizes.
01:28We get into severe territory when we talk about quarter-sized hail.
01:32But think about golf ball, tennis ball-sized hail.
01:35That's when we're really getting into the larger hail.
01:37And I mean, I don't think any of us really want to see the softball-sized hail.
01:41Thankfully, that's a little bit more rare here.
01:43But let's take a look at future radar and make sure you are prepared for when you should be staying inside to avoid all of that hail potential.
01:50We start to see the storm moving in overnight, area of low pressure in the cold front.
01:55They start to push their way farther to the east by the morning hours.
01:58Maybe some downpours into Kansas City and St. Louis that could interfere with your morning commute.
02:03We get more of a line of storms by the evening, afternoon, evening, overnight.
02:07That's the timing for the severe weather.
02:09Unfortunately, it doesn't push out of here like some storms.
02:13Instead, we have kind of another round a little bit farther south and east Friday that does have a severe potential as well.
