Severe storms are firing up across many parts of the U.S., leading to damaging hail and flash flooding.

00:00So a lot going on and overall the weekend forecast is going to hold the heat.
00:03Our heat wave persists for the Ohio Valley and the mid-Atlantic states.
00:07Now the northwestern edge of this is going to get chomped down a bit as we step into Sunday
00:13with the front making more progress east, but there are some thunderstorms in tow.
00:17In fact, the thunderstorms will precede the cool down in most cases.
00:20We'll have some scattered storms into the Great Basin, the Four Corners region,
00:23and then also a little farther southwest. It's going to be a hot time out there.
00:27Our top story takes us to the northeast where we're seeing some strong storms
00:30rolling through Massachusetts and here look at this in Agawam, Massachusetts.
00:35We're dealing with a pretty active scene there. The wind, the rain, visibility was down a bit
00:42as well and we are dealing with an ongoing threat here in some of these areas here of
00:46southern New England regarding some strong thunderstorms and we've been watching for
00:51some trouble here in other areas like Norwalk, Connecticut. Here's the current view in Norwalk
00:55and overall the risk is there for some more flash flooding.
00:59Some parts of Connecticut have seen flash flooding now.
01:01We had a flash flood warning for Hartford that has just expired.
01:04Other areas to the east still.
01:06Windom County, Connecticut under a flash flood warning in the southern end of the county
01:11from Windom east to the Rhode Island line.
01:14And there is a new severe thunderstorm warning until 7.30 for New London County.
01:18Basically from New London east to the state line there right up to near Westerly there
01:25and along the Rhode Island line there.
01:28Farther west we've been watching some storms.
01:30This one weekend as it moved into Binghamton you had a severe thunderstorm warning.
01:34Initially that storm is not as intense as it once was.
01:37But farther west you can see some strong storms moving into areas around Lake St. Clair
01:41up near the area of Stirling Heights in Richmond, Michigan near Sarnia there in western Ontario.
01:46And then also we had been mentioning and I mentioned how unimpressive this one area
01:51of rotation became as new development just kind of competed with the circulation of this
01:57storm here near the area of Raven in the area of northwestern parts, well at least north
02:04central parts of Nebraska.
02:06That tornado warning has indeed been allowed to expire and for good reason.
02:09There's not much rotation left there anymore.
02:11But there is still some rotation with this cell approaching Emmitsburg in Iowa and we're
02:16going to switch over to the high res radar data.
02:18Admittedly from a bit of a distance off to the northwest but at least we can scan the
02:22upper part of the atmosphere and we're still seeing that red against green.
02:25So there is still some spin and there is an area of rotation here for Palo Alto County
02:30of Iowa and that runs until 6.15 central time.
02:34So about 12 more minutes on that tornado warning for now.
02:37Many areas up and down the Rockies have been dealing with some severe weather too.
02:41In fact we're going to go all the way up into parts of Montana and some nasty storms
02:45have been on the map up in northern parts of Montana here.
02:48Classic signs of summer with some hail up into Brady, Montana.
02:52Dime size there and other reports into central parts of the state here.
02:56Two inch diameter hail in Hobson in Judith Basin County and then farther south.
03:01Our main concern here into northeastern Colorado is large hail and damaging wind.
03:05Tony Laubach is on this cell and he is approaching and probably into Colorado by now.
03:12He was leaving Kimball and heading south when we last checked in with him.
03:15And looking at that cell with some large hail potential within that storm.
03:20It's a severe thunderstorm worn cell for eastern Weld County
03:23and moving into Logan County of Colorado now.
03:25And as we put the pieces back together with the radar, you can see we're dealing with
03:29some ongoing severe thunderstorms in southern Colorado over to Sangre de Cristo mountains
03:33in some spots and also into the valley floor there near Alamosa.
03:37A little relief from the heat for some there on the valley floor.
03:40And also some flash flood concerns are on the map in recent burn scar areas.
03:44Even this week's most recent fire near Ruidoso.
03:47This is your second significant round of showers and rain since that fire broke out.
03:52So that's certainly helpful but there is always the risk of flash flooding.
03:55And a lot of flash flood threats farther north as the Hermit's Peak and Calf Canyon
03:59fire from a couple of years ago.
04:00That burn scar area also at risk of flash flooding.
