00:00Our first guest tonight is a talented and delightful woman
00:03you know from many things.
00:05Most recently, she plays Monica Marks in the Z Suite.
00:08You can see the finale tomorrow on 2B.
00:10Please welcome Lauren Graham.
00:12I haven't seen you in kind of a long time, I feel like.
00:34I know.
00:34I last saw you on Zoom.
00:36That's right.
00:37During the COVID pandemic.
00:40Yes.
00:40Wasn't that fun?
00:41It was terrible.
00:43I've completely forgotten it, though.
00:45Every once in a while, I remember that it happened.
00:47Was it terrible for you?
00:49Yes.
00:51There were some good things about it.
00:52Yes.
00:53Well, you could visit your friends on Zoom, I guess.
00:55You could visit your friends on Zoom.
00:56We started doing a lot of stuff on Zoom permanently after that.
01:00And you always had a great excuse
01:01to get out of doing anything.
01:05I'm not feeling too well.
01:07But it wasn't fun doing the show.
01:08It's more fun doing it in person.
01:10Are you sick of talking about Gilmore Girls,
01:13or Gilgirls, as I call it?
01:18Because I'm sensitive to that.
01:20I'm not sick of talking about it at all.
01:22What would you like to discuss?
01:23A couple of things.
01:24First of all, 25 years.
01:26It's a 25-year anniversary this year
01:28of the show being on the air, which is really strange.
01:32And even stranger is that it might be more popular now
01:37than it was when it was on the air the first time.
01:40I think so.
01:41We have definitely reached more people
01:43than we were reaching on the WB.
01:46How frequently are you hearing about this?
01:48Frequently.
01:49I hear about it frequently.
01:51And now it's trickled into younger people, older people,
01:55men whose kids or wives probably have forced them to watch it.
02:02And yeah, I get stopped a lot.
02:07It surprises me every time, though.
02:09I don't know why.
02:10My cousin Mickey watches with her daughter,
02:12my goddaughter, Frankie.
02:14I think you met them backstage.
02:16And my cousin Mickey, and I wrote this down
02:18because I want to make sure I got it right,
02:20because she texted me today and she said,
02:22I never read a parenting book that I knew already.
02:26She said, I just watched Gilmore Girls in Parenthood
02:29with Frankie, and she thinks of you as a second mother
02:33to her daughter.
02:34Wow.
02:36That's really sweet.
02:40I feel like we shouldn't be clapping for that.
02:41I know.
02:43Should we be concerned for Frankie?
02:47But Frankie turned out to be a great kid,
02:49and largely thanks to you.
02:51OK, but that's not, if Frankie wants to be a doctor,
02:54that's not the way.
02:55Don't learn it just from TV.
02:56That's not the way?
02:57Right.
02:58Frankie, actually, I asked her if you had one question
03:00for Lauren.
03:00Will you write down a question?
03:01She wrote down a question.
03:02May I ask the question?
03:04Lauren, how much do you make in residuals,
03:08and were you ever drunk on set?
03:12There really are no residuals on Netflix.
03:15Really?
03:16Yeah.
03:17Sorry, but I've been paid in love and appreciation,
03:24and I have never been drunk on set.
03:26No, OK, all right.
03:27I may have changed the question a little bit,
03:29because I think her actual question was,
03:31what did you have most fun shooting or something?
03:34But you, do you?
03:37Have you ever accosted one of your favorite stars
03:41in the way that you get accosted by these people?
03:43Yes, well, my first, the first one I can remember
03:47is Kenneth Branagh wrote a book.
03:49Anyone know Kenneth Branagh?
03:51OK, OK.
03:52I was in theater school, and we all really looked up to him,
03:56and he had written and directed a version of Henry V,
03:59and he had a book coming out about his life thus far,
04:02even though he was only like 30 or something,
04:04called Beginning.
04:06And we all got in line to get our book signed,
04:08and like left school and went to wherever he was.
04:11And I had never, I don't think, met anybody in person
04:15who I also had seen on screen.
04:17And so I had no plan, but I got to the thing with my book,
04:22and I said, I love you.
04:26And what did he say?
04:28He just kind of went like, OK.
04:30Like he wasn't, it wasn't like, like I think,
04:33I think I thought maybe like, this is how roadies do it.
04:36This is how you become like a girl who travels with the band.
04:38You know, you just go like.
04:39By the way, it is.
04:40It is exactly how it works.
04:42You just go, I love you, and the guy goes, here's my number.
04:44Meet me later.
04:45But not in the highbrow theater community.
04:48It didn't work.
04:49So I think he probably just signed my book
04:50and sent me on my way.
04:51Oh, really?
04:52Do you still have the book?
04:53No.
04:54No?
04:55All right.
04:56I know you had a birthday on Sunday.
04:58I did.
04:59Happy birthday.
05:01I'm guessing Kenneth didn't show up.
05:04Kenneth was not there.
05:06Kenneth was not there.
05:07But you had a little party.
05:08Who was at the party before I showed up?
05:10Well, most importantly, my dad was there.
05:12He came to visit, which was really fun.
05:14And some other friends.
05:16And it was just small and tacos and good times.
05:19Tacos and what?
05:20Was it like a taco theme party?
05:22Or it was just a?
05:22Yes, the only, as I said in the invite I wrote,
05:26we'll be having tacos and margaritas because I am aging,
05:29but my tastes are not.
05:31Is that always what you have?
05:32It's always what I have.
05:33Yeah.
05:34It's like you live in a Cabo Wabo.
05:36So dad came over.
05:38And this is a photograph of your dad.
05:40And did he bring this?
05:45I love that you guys think this is cute and not creepy.
05:49I never said that.
05:52My sister, Shade, sent me this large unicorn balloon,
05:56which I loved, which greeted me in the morning of my birthday.
05:59Like, in the doorway, I screamed.
06:01This is my sister who was raised in England.
06:03And so she said, if you touch it on the bum,
06:08it's supposed to do something.
06:10Like, it moves or it trots or it was supposed to do something.
06:13But we couldn't get it working.
06:15So I just have a bunch of pictures
06:16of people trying to touch the unicorn on its bum.
06:20That's my dad.
06:21You sure it wasn't a prank by your sister?
06:23I don't know.
06:24Because it's pretty funny if it was.
06:25Are you hard to buy gifts for?
06:28I don't think so, really.
06:31I don't know.
06:32Am I?
06:32I don't know.
06:34Yeah, almost impossible.
06:35I've never bought you anything.
06:38Did you get a lot of gifts?
06:39Do you say no gifts?
06:40Or are you like?
06:41No, I like gifts.
06:42I think, well, I mean, I think it's
06:44interesting what happens when you
06:46don't tell people what to do.
06:47I don't expect anything.
06:48But it's fun just what people think of.
06:51To see what they do.
06:52Yes.
06:53I had a 50th birthday party.
06:55And I believe he is a mutual friend.
06:57Joel McHale was there.
06:58He is.
06:59And I got a lot of candles and some books.
07:01And Joel gave me like a eight-inch long dagger.
07:08Can I tell you something?
07:09For our wedding, he gave me a sword.
07:13For real, a sword.
07:14And a very dangerous-seeming sword.
07:16Yes.
07:17Oh, this, you could cut a guy with this knife.
07:20Did he explain why?
07:21No.
07:22Oh, yeah, he's building a celebrity militia.
07:26He's assembling, yeah.
07:27You didn't know?
07:28You didn't go to the meeting?
07:30I just imagined, like, knowing that we both got one,
07:33like, what's his gift closet at home?
07:35Like, he's like, hmm.
07:37It's terrifying.
07:38That's what it is.
07:39Yeah, exactly.
07:39You know, they say if you put the dagger
07:42in the unicorn's bum, it will pop.
07:47Lauren Graham is with us.
07:48Her show is called The Z-Suit.
07:52Melvin, how is this possible?
07:55Well, it's costly starting your own business.
07:58Yes, I know that.
07:59But how can I be low on money?
08:04Oh, God, am I poor?
08:05You're not poor.
08:07Oh, thank God.
08:08I'd say borderline indigent.
08:10What?
08:11We are back with Lauren Graham.
08:12That is her show, The Z-Suit.
08:15We speak a lot to her on Tubi.
08:17It's tomorrow on Tubi is the finale of the show.
08:19But you can go back on Tubi, right?
08:21Oh, yes, you can do anything you want on Tubi.
08:24How much do you know about Tubi?
08:25Nothing.
08:26Nothing.
08:27No, I know a lot about it now.
08:29It's a wonderful network. It's free.
08:30It's an app.
08:31Yeah, you just download it, you know, like the kids do.
08:35But no, when they called, I didn't know what it was.
08:37Yeah, right.
08:38And then they probably get that a lot where you're
08:40like, it's going to be on what?
08:41Yes, but also, I just joined Instagram like a year ago.
08:46So I'm not really the person who would know anyway.
08:49I see.
08:50So it could have been just like Netflix,
08:53except for they pay you.
08:54But yeah.
08:55So I still can't believe you don't get any residencies.
08:58Let's not talk about it anymore.
08:59I can't believe it.
09:01I'm in trouble.
09:02And what's the worst that happens?
09:03You get a check?
09:04I don't know.
09:06I don't know.
09:07You know, so does Tubi have, like, ratings?
09:12Like, do they tell you, like, this is how
09:13many people are watching it?
09:14I don't know.
09:16But so what I do is I put it on my phone or, you know,
09:22other devices, and I just let it run.
09:26Like, I'll just, like, put the phone down.
09:28And I'm like, they know.
09:30They'll think I'm watching it.
09:31And like, I have all these, like, fake Tubi accounts.
09:34Really?
09:35Yeah.
09:36Wow.
09:37Yeah, because that's how it works, right?
09:39Yeah, sure, yeah.
09:41Well, that's quite a commitment.
09:43Yeah, well, I'm.
09:44Are the other cast members doing this?
09:48I don't know.
09:49Have you suggested this to anybody?
09:50No, it's embarrassing.
09:53It's more like it's a play.
09:55It's sort of like karma, you know?
09:57Yeah, kind of.
09:59Very sort of like karma.
10:00Is karma another streaming service we don't know about?
10:03It might be.
10:03It might be.
10:06So the show, why is it called the Z-Suite?
10:08Because the Gen Z takes over the executives, which are usually
10:13referred to as the C-Suite.
10:15And I am out of a job, and the young people take over.
10:18Ah, so then you're on the show with a bunch of, what,
10:20millennials?
10:21Yes, yes.
10:22Well, they're Gen Z, which is different, I guess.
10:25Younger, right?
10:26Yes, they're younger.
10:27They're younger, yeah.
10:28Is it strange to be in that position?
10:30Well, no, you've been in that position before.
10:31But to be, like, the icon on the set?
10:35It's words like icon that are really weird.
10:39It's just, yeah, I guess in my mind,
10:42like, I was here with you when you started this show.
10:45That feels like.
10:45You were here before we started this show.
10:47You were nice enough to do a test show with us.
10:50And the test failed.
10:52The sacrifice.
10:54The test failed?
10:55Well, it was not, I mean, yeah, yeah.
10:57I mean, have you ever gone back and seen any of that?
10:59No.
11:00It's a miracle we're still on.
11:02Fortunately, I would put my TV on and just let it run.
11:06I have a home.
11:08That's why you're still here.
11:10That's why you're still here.
11:11Yeah.
11:12The kids are younger.
11:14Yes, they think I know things.
11:15They ask my advice about stuff.
11:17Oh, they do?
11:18Yeah, and I'm also a producer.
11:19So it's, yeah, there is a little more separation
11:23than maybe normally I would have with my, I'm not,
11:26after a time we were all just hanging out.
11:28But in the beginning, yeah, they showed me respect.
11:30What?
11:31Did you have someone like that when you were
11:33on a show who you would?
11:35Oh, I mean, everyone.
11:38And one of my first movies was with Meryl Streep.
11:41My first TV pilot was with Rita Moreno playing a judge.
11:46And did you have like the wherewithal to say,
11:49hey, I'd love to have some advice,
11:51or what should I do, or anything like that?
11:53No, I think I thought that the way you start a career
11:57is to pretend you know more than you do
11:59and never admit to anyone that you
12:01don't know what you're doing.
12:04But Rita was someone I knew of from theater and everything.
12:08And I played like a upstart lawyer, and she's the judge.
12:12And in the middle of one of my speeches,
12:14it's like a half hour sitcom.
12:15She just goes, don't whine.
12:20And I was like, is that a line of hers?
12:23Is that a note she's giving me?
12:25Is that something just in general for life?
12:28It is good advice in general, yeah.
12:30Did you ever figure it out?
12:31No, because I was pretending like I knew what I was doing.
12:34I see.
12:35But it wasn't in the script, as far as you know.
12:37Probably not.
12:38And it didn't make the final cut?
12:39It didn't.
12:40So it sounds like you may have been whining.
12:41Yeah.
12:43Well, I learned.
12:45I learned my lesson.
12:46Well, you know, Rita, maybe you give her a call
12:48and just say, hey, you know, I know it's been a while,
12:50but I'd love to get to the bottom
12:51of that note you gave me.
12:53No.
12:55All right, so anyway, the show is on Tubi.
12:57You can do one of two things.
12:59You can watch it, which I think is what you should do.
13:01I recommend it.
13:02Or you could just put it on.
13:05The season finale of the Z Suite tomorrow on Tubi.
13:09Lauren Graham, everybody.
13:10Thank you, Lauren.
13:10We'll be back with Danielle Brooks.
