00:00And now the weekend preview segment brought to you by Three Chimneys.
00:11We're going to continue with previewing the Breeders' Cup.
00:14We'll take a look now at the Distaff, Turf and Breeders' Cup Classic.
00:17Race nine on the card is the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
00:20I think next to the Classic, this is the second best race of the entire program.
00:23This is what, this thing is absolutely loaded in here.
00:28So many good fillies in here could go a bunch of different ways.
00:31Ernest is a deserving favorite in here.
00:33She's been brilliant ever since running second in the Belmont, running through wins in the
00:37coaching club, Alabama and Belding.
00:39But the value in here, and I think Zoe's going to agree with me on this one, because I remember
00:43what she said in the past.
00:44The value is Clarriere, because she's going to be the forgotten horse based on her race
00:48in the personal ensign.
00:50If you like Mallet that, how do you not like Clarriere?
00:53She beat her twice.
00:54She beat her in the Ogden Phipps and beat her in the Shoe V. Her race in the personal
00:58ensign is a complete throwout.
01:00She lost the race at the gate.
01:02She was very fractious.
01:03She banged her head against the starting gate.
01:05It's a complete throwout.
01:06Trainer Steve Asmussen, who is as good as it gets, has had all that time to get her
01:10ready for this.
01:11I think this race is going to be three of them on the wire.
01:13It's going to be who gets the best strip.
01:15Clarriere, Nest, Mallet that, search results, no slouch either.
01:20Remember Siegfried Oeth won the Kentucky Oaks, but she hasn't been the same filly in quite
01:23some time.
01:24Zoe, Clarriere, what do you think?
01:27I like her.
01:28I'm not using her on top.
01:29I love Mallet that.
01:31Yeah.
01:32Watching her works.
01:33I think she's head and shoulders.
01:34I love Nest as well, and she's worked very nicely.
01:36But Mallet that just seems to have come into her own of late.
01:40I don't think the one hole is going to hurt her.
01:42She won from the one hole last time out, taking the spinster and almost propping at the wire
01:47with Johnny V. She did it so easily.
01:49So it's going to be Mallet that for me.
01:53I'm with you on Clarriere, but you know, Nest is going to run her race.
01:58She holds the beat off numbers.
02:00But I think we're forgetting about the other Asmussen in here, in society.
02:06The daughter, there you go, Randy, the daughter of Gunrunner.
02:10She's comfortably drawn on the outside, filled of eight.
02:13She's got plenty of time to get over.
02:15She's fast.
02:16She gets Giroux.
02:17She's six to one.
02:19And I don't think we've seen the best of her.
02:22She's run some great numbers, but she's barely ever been favored.
02:25She was seven to one last time.
02:27She was favored at Charlestown.
02:28Why wouldn't she be favored at Charlestown?
02:31She was favored in the Monomoy Girl.
02:33She wasn't favored when she broke her maiden.
02:35I think we're overlooking society on the outside.
02:38And as much as I love Mallet that, drawn down on the rail, I think the now Philly could
02:44well be society.
02:45And I just hope we get to see her next year as well.
02:47I love Mallet.
02:48I mean, who doesn't like Mallet, can't you?
02:50I totally agree.
02:52I mean, she's in good form right now and all, but, you know, she's not an unbeatable type
02:58of Philly.
02:59Clairie Eyre, total throw out last time because of what happened in the starting gate.
03:04I firmly believe that.
03:06She was in great form before that, but she's not unbeatable either.
03:10She's going to run well.
03:11Nest, you know, I mean, you can make the case.
03:15I mean, who did she beat in the bell game?
03:17She was one to 10 or one to 20.
03:21Yeah.
03:22Society.
03:23If you go back and watch her races, Charlestown and the Cotillion, really only two you need
03:27to watch.
03:29And what you're going to immediately see is going to be like when the gates open, wow,
03:36you aggressively sprinting like a quarter horse almost to the lead.
03:40And you're like, how in the heck is this horse going to last?
03:44Right.
03:45And she gets to the lead.
03:46She settles, she relaxes.
03:49And then when they start to come to her at one point, you know, she just rebreaks again
03:53and opens up and wins seemingly with something left, although I know that's often misleading.
03:59What's going to happen in here?
04:01Search results has speed.
04:03But even though, you know, we didn't talk to Chad Brown about this, I promise you my
04:07opinion since search results was run down at a mile and an eighth when she hooked up
04:12with Latruska early in one of her other races, I think they're concerned a little about her
04:18getting the mile and an eighth distance.
04:20And I don't think they want any part of going up to hook society on the front end.
04:24So I think they'll be content to sit second.
04:27And that means society will have a nice, comfortable trip on the front end.
04:31I think she'll control the pace.
04:33Wake at midnight, we'll be up there stalking as well.
04:36But that's society's game.
04:39Given the fact that I think she's going to get the trip and that she's in great form
04:43and the name of the game on dirt is speed, at six to one, that's me.
04:50Race ten on the card is the Breeders' Cup turf.
04:52Let's move on to that.
04:54The Europeans have won six of their last seven and they're going to have some very strong
04:57horses in there. But I tell you, I can poke holes in most of the main European contenders.
05:03First of all, Rebels romance, three to one in the morning line.
05:05Got the Applebee factor.
05:07But the horse has won his last two group ones in Germany.
05:10German racing is just not as strong as France, Ireland and England.
05:14You can't take that and look at it and equate it to what you see in the three main countries
05:19in Europe.
05:20The other Applebee horse in here, Nation's Pride, Randy, it just isn't all that fast.
05:24I mean, I know the horse looked very good beating three-year-olds in the Saratoga Derby
05:28and the Jockey Club Derby Invitational, but that 96 buyer number doesn't do a whole lot
05:33for me.
05:34The Distrip, the 11 horse, it's six to one.
05:37I know Soft last time out in the Arc de Triomphe, anybody can run poorly in that race, but it's
05:41just not in good form right now.
05:43Hasn't won in ages all the way back since August 18th of 2021.
05:49So I think that there's, you know, like I said, I'm going to poke a hole.
05:52I got some knocks in every single one of the main European contenders in here.
05:56So if I'm going to go for an American horse, I'm going to go for Warlight Goddess.
06:00I love, absolutely loved her last race.
06:03I like the way that she was closer to the pace now.
06:07That was with Lascano aboard, Rosario comes back on her, but her flower bowl was a disaster
06:12from the trip.
06:13She's just so consistent, so good.
06:15She's got Bill Mott, and Mott, you know, what a smart trainer he is in here to run her against
06:20boys last time out in the Turf Classic, to come back against boys again.
06:23She certainly has a better chance in this race, I think, than she would have in the
06:27Mile-in-366 Breeders' Cup Philly and Mayor Turf.
06:31So I'm a Warlight Goddess fan in here.
06:33I think she's a terrific Philly.
06:34She should have won the Eclipse Award last year.
06:36She's going to win the Eclipse Award this year when she wins this race, Randy.
06:39Oh, look, would I be surprised if Warlight Goddess beat the Europeans?
06:42No, I would not.
06:43I mean, I think all, you know, all love in the world of Warlight Goddess.
06:48I don't want to sound like I'm, you know, going to run out and buy stock in Charlie
06:52Appleby.
06:54But look, I went into here deciding, I thought I knew who I liked the better of the two Charlie
07:02Appleby horses visually, but I knew William Buick was going to have his choice.
07:06So I said, let's let William Buick make the call here.
07:10Which horse is better of the Appleby's?
07:11Is it Rebel's Romance from Germany or is it Nation's Pride?
07:15And William Buick has chosen to ride Nation's Pride.
07:19And I think it is a good choice.
07:21The buyer speed figure of the Jockey Club Derby, the 96, doesn't bother me in the least.
07:27And this is why.
07:29Last year, Yabir was shipped over by Appleby to run in the same race, the Jockey Club Derby.
07:35And he won it and he looked pretty good winning it.
07:39He got a 94, if I recall, 94 buyer speed figure.
07:42And they took him back to England and they brought him back for the Breeders' Cup turf.
07:46And as a three-year-old, he took a big step forward when they got him back to the mile
07:50and a half turf.
07:52And he ran 10 points faster.
07:54He ran a 104, coming from way back, nailing the speed at the wire.
07:58To me, Nation's Pride was far more visually impressive in the Jockey Club Derby than Yabir
08:06was the year before.
08:07If you look at Nation's Pride's three races in the United States this year, he's been
08:12hearing back three different times.
08:13So he's accustomed to it.
08:14I think he shows a great progression already.
08:18In his first start, the Belmont Derby, I hated Frankie DeTorre's ride.
08:22I thought he rode him very passively early and he got himself shuffled back and he was
08:27way too far back.
08:29He wound up four wide on the second turn.
08:32Still finished well to be narrowly beaten by Classic Causeway, a horse that he should
08:36have been able to outrun in his sleep at a mile and a quarter.
08:40Came back in the Saratoga Derby, DeTorre off, William Buick on.
08:45As you see happen a lot of times with these European riders, when they come to America,
08:49especially Ryan Moore, William Buick rode Nation's Pride very aggressively out of the
08:55gate, wanting to get him into the race as opposed to his previous start with DeTorre.
09:00And rode him so aggressively that you wondered how he would finish.
09:02But it's Charlie Eppleby, it's a European horse.
09:05He finished very well.
09:06He went by Classic Causeway.
09:07He won.
09:08He was drifting a little bit, wandering in the stretch probably because he was used so
09:12much early.
09:13So I was very interested to see if there would be a progression third time out in the Jockey
09:17Club Derby.
09:18And immediately you knew there was because he put his back to Frankie DeTorre.
09:23He put DeTorre right into the race at the start, didn't have to urge him at all.
09:27He took him right there and the pace wasn't that slow.
09:31And then when he kicked, oh my gosh, I mean, you talk about a visually impressive kick,
09:3522 and four for the last quarter of a mile, going a mile and a half to 24.14 final time.
09:43I think he's going to show another step forward in the Breeders' Cup turf.
09:46And I know I've gone over my time allotment here, but I like Nation's Pride.
09:52Yeah, what he said, basically.
09:57Wow, OK, that's it.
09:58That's simple, Zoe.
10:00I mean, I can't really add much more to Randy's diatribe there, but yeah, what he said with
10:06Nation's Pride, I do like, I do like Walleye Goddess, I have to say.
10:14And I hope maybe that Rosario watched the race last time and see that she can be a little
10:20bit closer if it's slower.
10:21But I will say one thing.
10:23I didn't think she had as good a turn as foot last time.
10:26I thought maybe she just hung just a little bit rather than produce late.
10:31I'm not sure we saw such a blazing turn of foot.
10:34Well, Zoe, was that because she was closer early?
10:38It was. Yeah, it was.
10:40She got the job done.
10:42So but she's going to be facing a lot stiffer.
10:44So I'll just leave that in Rosario's hands.
10:47She gets a little bit of a break and weights with one hundred and twenty three pounds.
10:50Hey, she's five for five of the distance and two for two at Keeneland.
10:53You can't beat that with a stick.
10:55So it's her race to lose.
10:57And we'll just see how she comes up against Nation's Pride, what he said, basically.
11:03Good job, Randy.
11:04Now, just like we didn't talk about Echo Zulu at all when we got to the sprint, we have
11:13not yet uttered the word Mishriff.
11:16Despite the fact that I did, I got my not Mishriff.
11:20You did not him.
11:20I'm sorry that I'm sorry I was I was too busy thinking about my diatribe for Nation's
11:24Pride. The thing the thing is, if Mishriff happens to win this race and it's John
11:30Gosden, for Christ's sakes, he will be the richest horse in earnings ever to compete in
11:37North America, primarily because of obviously the Saudi Cup that he won, the inaugural
11:42Saudi Cup on dirt. I just think he's a little over the top, like you said, probably.
11:46And so that's why I couldn't go in.
11:48So there. TDN Riders Room and the Weekend Preview is brought to you by Three Chimneys,
11:54the home of Gunrunner.
11:56And how about the prodigy of Gunrunner in the Breeders' Cup, Teba in the classic Echo
12:00Zulu in the Filian Mare Sprint and Wicked Halo, also in that race, Gunite and Cyber
12:06Knife in the Dirt Mile.
12:08Society, we've talked about her in the Distaff and Grand Love, who probably set the pace
12:14in the Juvenile Fillies. Sharp-Ass Tekka also stands at Three Chimneys, his progeny in the
12:19Breeders' Cup. Alma, Alma Rose, let's say that right, Alma Rose in the Juvenile Fillies
12:24and then in the Juvenile Turf Sprint, both Tyler's Tribe and Sharp as a tech.
12:28That's a nice murderer's row line up there for stallions standing at Three Chimneys.
12:32We'll be right back for part two of the Weekend Preview after this message from Three
12:36Chimneys.
12:38Here comes Teba, Teba in the center of the track with good looking stride, squares off
12:43with Cyber Knife, Cyber Knife takes the lead, Teba going with him, these two in a thriller,
12:48Cyber Knife just in front and Cyber Knife has won the TBG.com Haskell over Teba.
12:55Jack Christopher finished third, the running time 1 minute 46.24 seconds.
13:03Come, dream with us at Three Chimneys.
13:08And welcome back.
13:09We continue with the Weekend Preview brought to you by Three Chimneys and we saved the
13:12best for last, the Breeders' Cup Classic.
13:14I got to tell you, I can't remember the last time I was looking forward to a Breeders'
13:17Cup race as much as this.
13:19And the reason is obvious because of flight line.
13:23You know, we are been so spoiled.
13:25I know he's only raced five times.
13:27We've been so spoiled to see this horse.
13:29I mean, he's done things that I didn't think I would see in my lifetime.
13:33You know, I was fortunate enough as a very small wee child to see Secretariat run in
13:37person at the Belmont Stakes and his race in the Pacific Classic absolutely reminded
13:41me of that.
13:42Maybe it's blasphemy to say it was good, but it was certainly the best race I've seen of
13:46any horse run since Secretariat in the Belmont Stakes.
13:50By no means would I try to pick against him.
13:53Matter of fact, I want to get after I do my little diatribe, I've set the over under on
13:58how many lengths he wins by at six and a half.
14:01Quickly, over or under, Randy?
14:02And Zoe, you too.
14:05Under.
14:06All right.
14:07You know, the reason why it's not 19, of course, is because he's running in a much, much better
14:12field than he ran against in the Pacific Classic.
14:15I mean, in hindsight, that probably wasn't a very good field.
14:17He's not going to win by 19 lengths, but, you know, it's such a treat.
14:21From a betting standpoint, I think the way to go is to try to figure out who's going
14:25to run second in here.
14:26I'm going to take a stand against Life is Good, who probably be the third or fourth
14:31choice in here.
14:31There's not a ton of value in throwing him out.
14:33I didn't like his Woodward one bit.
14:37I know Todd Pletcher has given you some reasons why he thinks the race is a little bit better
14:40than looks on paper, but I just don't like him coming into the race off, you know, where
14:44he was one to a thousand and, you know, wasn't life and death to win or anything like that.
14:48But he really did, you know, have a challenge on his hands.
14:51I've been a Teba fan all along.
14:53I think he will run second.
14:55I think the second place finishes between the two top three-year-olds in either Teba
14:59or Epicenter.
15:00Rich Strike, the other three-year-old in there, I don't think he's quite good enough to do
15:03it in here.
15:04But Teba, when this horse won the Santa Anita Derby in his second lifetime start, that signaled
15:09to me that there was absolutely something special here.
15:11He took a little bit while to regroup and he finally came into his own and showed what
15:15he's all about in the Pennsylvania Derby, which was a dynamite race.
15:19Nothing wrong with Epicenter at all.
15:21I'm going to play.
15:21It's not a ton of value, but that's how I'm going to play the race.
15:24Flight line on top and exact this with Teba and Epicenter, Randy.
15:27Oh, you know, Bill, after my diatribe in the turf, I want to do like they do in the Senate
15:31and the House of Representatives.
15:33I'm going to cede to Zoe.
15:36Zoe, why don't you go first on flight line?
15:42All right.
15:42Well, I mean, you saw flight line school today, right?
15:46Did he not look good?
15:47I actually was thinking, judging by the pictures that I've seen of him last week, I'm like,
15:52oh, he looks a little lighter than he looked in California.
15:56I don't know.
15:56He's been working really fast.
15:58And I saw him today.
15:59I'm like, oh, throw that out the window.
16:00He looks great.
16:02He's going to be tough to beat.
16:03I pulled up his thorough graph numbers, negative eight and a half, negative four, negative five,
16:10negative five, and a zero when he broke his maiden.
16:13Those are just unheard of.
16:15Nobody's touching him.
16:16I mean, he can go back 10 lengths and he's probably still the best horse in the race.
16:20So it's flight line for me of everything I've seen.
16:24I thought Teba looked terrific schooling today.
16:27Just like a copper shiny penny by gunrunner.
16:32He looks like he's put on weight since he got here, to be perfectly honest.
16:36He's going to get a great trip from the rail under Mike Smith.
16:40He's probably going to be sitting in the catbird seat.
16:42It's going to be really interesting to see how fast they go into the first turn,
16:46because you got Teba pegged by Life is Good, who they slapped the draw reins back on him this week.
16:51They took him off at Saratoga because he'd gotten to where he would acquiesce with the
16:57rider and just relax.
16:58But he's on his game.
17:00And when he's wearing his draw reins, he's on his game.
17:03He's been super tough to handle.
17:05So I think he's going to be as sharp as a tack, pun intended.
17:09And what are we setting the over under at for the opening quarter?
17:1623 overall?
17:1923 and two?
17:20Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
17:22Running down the stretch, straight line, mile and a quarter.
17:2522 and change is the norm.
17:27Wow.
17:28For the Breeders' Cup.
17:29Yeah.
17:2922 and three, something like this.
17:3322 and three.
17:34Randy, what's after the first quarter mile?
17:39Life is Good is in front by how much?
17:41Where is Flightline?
17:44After the first quarter, I'll say Life is Good is in the three to four path around the
17:54first turn, probably a length and a half ahead of Flightline.
18:00When they turn up the back stretch, I think Flavie and Pratt will go to about the eight
18:05or nine path going down the backside, while Life is Good is still well off the rail.
18:10Because I think Pratt is going to try like heck to keep Flightline from getting too aggressive
18:15and putting him too close to Life is Good.
18:17I think he's going down the back stretch.
18:18It doesn't matter how wide you are.
18:20I think he's going to be way the hell out to the crown to try to get Flightline relaxed.
18:26So I think they'll go 22 and two, 46 flat.
18:32And then probably 109 and change for three quarters of a mile.
18:36I didn't want Zoe to have to say what he said for two races in a row.
18:45The only scenario that I can see Flightline losing, and this is possibly a stretch, but
18:51here it is.
18:53Both Life is Good and Flightline have similar styles in that it's almost like there's a
19:01stoplight at the three quarter pole, the six furlong pole, and it switches to green
19:07when both those horses get to the back stretch.
19:09They want to go.
19:11You saw it in the Pacific Classic, right?
19:13Flightline just literally dragged Pratt to the lead at the three quarter pole.
19:17That's when Life is Good wants to go.
19:21And I could see Life is Good taking off like a bat out of hell at the three quarter pole
19:27because he's very aggressive right now.
19:29And I could see Flightline getting aggressive with Pratt and wanting to go after this horse.
19:33Who is this horse?
19:34I'm supposed to be in front.
19:36You know, these horses are supposed to lay down when I run up to them.
19:41And he's never chased a horse as fast as Life is Good.
19:46And if he gets too competitive too early, and if he gets up there head and head with
19:51Life is Good, and they go screaming down the back stretch, because Life is Good, you know
19:55how fast he is.
19:56And if they're 10 lengths ahead of the rest of the field and they get to the quarter pole
20:00and Flightline has put Life is Good away and he's two lengths in front, but they've gone
20:03109 and one or 109 and two, that's a scenario in which I can see an Epicenter or a Teba
20:12perhaps, perhaps running down Flightline.
20:16But interesting, funny, as usual, a conversation with Bob Baffert this morning.
20:22You know, I asked him about Teba and how he was coming up to the race and where he thought
20:25he would be early in the race and all that.
20:28And he said, well, he said, the good news is Teba loves a target.
20:34The bad news is he's got to be able to see the target.
20:41Bob thinks that Flightline is, in his words, American pharaoh as a four-year-old.
20:49Right.
20:50So it's going to be, you know, it's going to be a fascinating race.
20:54I think it's Flightline's race to lose.
20:57I'd love to see him go off and as they say, run off the TV.
21:01I think he'll win.
21:02But that's the only scenario that I could see him with maybe a chink in his arm.
21:07Zoe, what do you think about that as a former rider?
21:10Do you think that Mike Smith is just going to sit there when they pop the latches?
21:15Because he's in the one hole.
21:17I can't see him just sitting there and getting covered up.
21:20I think he's going to be.
21:22Yeah, I don't think he's fast enough.
21:25And I can't see Smith really sending him to try to go after.
21:28I realize what you're saying about the one pulse, but I just don't see Smith.
21:31I mean, he doesn't want to get involved with it with life is good early.
21:35You know, he can sit that comfortable third or fourth trip.
21:38What Mike Smith told Bob Baffert is that when Teba leaves the gate,
21:42you think he's going to be in front.
21:44And then as soon as he drops his hands back on him a little bit,
21:48the horse gets the message and it's like, OK, I'm fine.
21:51And then he kind of comes back to him and he allows himself to be placed where he wants to be placed.
21:56Now, where that is, is up to Mike Smith.
21:59So I think he's going to be trying to be as close to life as good.
22:04I think life is good is going to go.
22:06Mike's going to send get to the outside of life is good.
22:09Hold that position and then flight line will be in the middle of the racetrack,
22:12like you said, going down the backside.
22:14Interesting.
22:15I think he's going to be a lot closer than you give him credit for,
22:17because that horse is sharp right now.
22:20Super sharp for him.
22:21Will he be will he be second in the early going instead of flight line?
22:26I think so, yeah.
22:29OK, interesting point.
22:31Basically, it's even more interesting.
