00:00You wanna go shopping for me?
00:02I'm finding a lot of inspiration.
00:04She has beautiful taste.
00:05Yes.
00:06Mary Claire and Will Buck are moving here from Jackson.
00:10They are the new kids in town.
00:11Pick your feet up.
00:12Pick your feet up.
00:13Will is the new internal medicine doctor at the hospital.
00:15And Mary Claire works in insurance risk management.
00:19Being in the throes of medical school
00:21and residency for so long,
00:24we're excited to start a new chapter.
00:26That one little boy, William, he's two and a half.
00:29And also she's pregnant.
00:31Like how pregnant?
00:32Very.
00:33Okay, I'm stressed out for her.
00:34This is what she wrote in my design survey
00:36I send to everybody.
00:37Our current home and style are very mid-century modern
00:40meets eclectic meets transitional.
00:42And these are all like family pieces
00:44that they already have.
00:45But I wanna add to this.
00:47So our job is to nest for her.
00:50Yeah, we are the nesters.
00:52Well, you have to find the nest.
00:54Yeah.
00:54And then I'll help fluff the nest.
00:57Woo!
01:02This is one of my favorite neighborhoods.
01:05It is.
01:06In Laurel.
01:07I really like it.
01:08I like all the mature trees.
01:09Yeah, this is a really nice neighborhood.
01:10We just know so many young families who live here.
01:13And we're trying to keep it 600,000 all in.
01:15I don't wanna go above that.
01:17Well, you wanna talk about this house.
01:18This is the Roberts house.
01:20It's four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms,
01:234,500 square feet, listed for $385,000.
01:27I like the size.
01:28It's a little tired,
01:29but I think it's got a lot of potential.
01:32The must-have for this house will be space.
01:34Yeah, if we want a bigger yard,
01:35especially something we could put a little slide
01:37and a little tree house in.
01:38This is a really great neighborhood for littles.
01:40Yeah.
01:41I'm very curious what your thoughts are on the brick.
01:43I like brick.
01:45I don't know that I love this brick.
01:47So what do you think about if we painted the brick?
01:50Oh, that looks so good.
01:51Oh, wow, yeah, that looks really good.
01:52A pretty cream color.
01:53And that would soften everything so much.
01:55And we came in with a sage, kind of neutral green
01:59on all of the window trim.
02:01The front door, it's a little bit small
02:04and a grander, friendlier entrance, I think,
02:06if we gave you double doors that are stained wood.
02:09Love that.
02:10And update the landscaping a little bit.
02:12I like that this just sort of enhances what's there.
02:15So out here, 40 grand.
02:17I mean, that's a bit of a scary number,
02:19but I think it obviously needs some love.
02:22Let's go inside.
02:23OK, let's do it.
02:24Their budget is $600,000, but that is like-
02:27Huge in Laurel.
02:28Space is important to them, but more square footage
02:30means more materials, which means more money.
02:33They are very nervous about that.
02:35Everything is so expensive these days.
02:37We've been blown away by what it's gonna take.
02:41We're ready for kind of a bigger step up.
02:43I don't know how you feel about parquet flooring,
02:45but I love it.
02:47They look a little bit worn.
02:48I like parquet.
02:49We got excited, and then we couldn't get excited anymore
02:51because-
02:53Oh, OK.
02:54That's interesting.
02:55It's missing.
02:56There is no parquet in the middle of the rooms.
02:58Oh, in any of them.
02:59OK.
03:00They just ran the floor around the outside.
03:02The only thing I can figure,
03:04they were trying to save money.
03:05But because of that, we would have to do new flooring
03:08throughout the first floor.
03:09Oh, no.
03:10OK.
03:11This room could be a home office.
03:12Yeah, it'd be a nice office.
03:13And then formal dining here.
03:15You host a lot.
03:16Yes, we do.
03:17We are the holiday house.
03:18I love that.
03:19For family.
03:20So the dining room is very important.
03:22So we could paint, update the lighting,
03:24new flooring throughout the first floor.
03:26OK.
03:27And that is where the biggest number-
03:29Yeah, so all this so far is 40 grand.
03:32Same as the outside.
03:33OK.
03:34But come see this kitchen.
03:35OK.
03:36It's bizarre.
03:36But it's huge.
03:37It's divided right now, but it could be a huge kitchen.
03:41OK.
03:42It's the super 70s.
03:43Yeah, lots of wallpaper.
03:45So much pattern.
03:46It feels cramped.
03:48And look how much room there is over here, right?
03:50Yeah.
03:51And that's because behind this wall,
03:53there is a pantry and a half bath.
03:55OK.
03:55So what we were proposing, delete this wall of cabinets
03:59and delete the peninsula.
04:00Most of all, delete this wall.
04:03So then you could have custom cabinetry
04:05built in all the way along that back wall
04:07and wrapping around the kitchen.
04:09And we'd give you two symmetrical windows.
04:11You'd have your range in between the windows.
04:14We'd build a big island in the middle of the kitchen
04:17where your sink would go.
04:18Then you could still have that pantry
04:20and a little bit of entryway to the carport,
04:21and then a door to the half bath.
04:24And then you could have more built-ins along the wall
04:26here and a breakfast nook.
04:28We could put in doors here so you have access to that sunroom
04:31from the kitchen.
04:33And then you could build a cased opening that goes to the den.
04:36And we'd do new luxury vinyl tile in here
04:39so it matches the rest of the house.
04:41Close off this second door to the dining room
04:43and use it for even more storage.
04:46And then if you can imagine no more wallpaper,
04:49we'd use neutral but really warm transitional colors
04:53that you said you love in your design survey
04:55that I think would make sense in a house from this era.
04:57I think it sounds amazing.
04:59Oh, wow.
04:59So this is an expensive kitchen.
05:01It sounds expensive.
05:01Yeah.
05:02That's a lot of walls being moved.
05:03Yeah.
05:04A lot of walls, a lot of everything being moved.
05:05$65,000.
05:07Oh, wow.
05:08Come see this den.
05:09I think it's pretty cozy.
05:11How do you feel about stained wood?
05:13I think in moderation, we could just paint the bookcases
05:16but keep this wood on this wall and keep the beams.
05:20So this room's 10 grand.
05:21I thought better.
05:22That feels reasonable.
05:23Because if you said 40 or 60, I was going to walk out.
05:25Like, this is enough of that.
05:27Well, we've got another great 10 grand number.
05:30Come see the suite.
05:32Right now, it's three rooms that are connected.
05:35So right now, this is like a great big dressing room
05:39with two closets and a bathroom that's
05:41just, like, crammed into a corner.
05:43This room, it's like it's connected to this room.
05:45And I don't really understand what this was originally.
05:47Anyway, I would continue that wood flooring in here.
05:50So in here, it's just like paint, lights.
05:53Based on what you said in your design survey,
05:55you would like to have a freestanding bathtub.
05:58Yes.
05:58And a walk-in shower.
05:59So what we were thinking is you basically
06:02just delete everything except keep a closet
06:05on the left for Will.
06:06But delete the other closet to the right of the window.
06:09You could sit a beautiful bathtub in front of the window
06:13and a his and hers vanity on each side
06:15and leave this door here that leads to the sunroom.
06:18And then some more built-ins to the right of the vanity.
06:21And then you would walk into a door
06:23that would take you to a toilet closet right now
06:25and what is the bathroom.
06:27And the other half of the bathroom
06:29would be a walk-in shower.
06:30But then.
06:31But then, this could be extravagant.
06:33But what if this whole room were a dressing room
06:36for you, a closet, and you could.
06:41Necessary, maybe not.
06:43Awesome.
06:44Right.
06:45You would never come out of there.
06:46The bedroom's cheap, but everything else
06:48together, $60,000.
06:51Oh.
06:52Oh, man.
06:52A quality house in a quality neighborhood
06:55is the starting point.
06:57And then you're bringing it into the way
06:59that you want to live in it.
07:00It's $600,000 all in.
07:02OK.
07:03We asked for a bigger house, and we want a bigger house.
07:06But I don't know that we connected
07:07the dots financially.
07:09Don't have to get feeling sick over this yet.
07:12Let's go look at another house.
07:14I am kind of excited to see you have that dressing room.
07:17This whole journey, going back to school
07:19and going through all this training, she's been there.
07:22She's just been the rock.
07:23She's been steady.
07:24So I'd be really glad, excited for you
07:26to have something special.
07:29That's really sweet.
07:30Yeah.
07:35This is a big house, OK?
07:36It's another big house.
07:37But it's not as expensive.
07:40So this is the Vance house.
07:42OK.
07:43Very long.
07:43Yes.
07:44It's four bedrooms, four baths.
07:46It is 4,600 square feet.
07:50OK.
07:51So a little bit bigger.
07:52Yeah.
07:53And this one's listed for $350,000.
07:55OK.
07:55And this one is less expensive.
07:57I like that price.
07:58Yeah.
07:59Obviously, this isn't really in a neighborhood, per se.
08:02The road is kind of busy.
08:04So I feel like there's a give and take there.
08:07But the house is set far back.
08:09So I think safety is not a big concern
08:12since we have a fenced-in yard.
08:14I think, actually, style-wise, I like it
08:16better than the other one.
08:17Really?
08:18With some updates, obviously, but yeah.
08:20Yeah.
08:20I like the stairs.
08:22This is a neat little, like, sitting area over here.
08:23I like that.
08:24It's a statement brick again.
08:25Yeah.
08:26So you can paint this one.
08:28OK.
08:29Yeah.
08:30I love the green.
08:31I like green.
08:32It's one of my favorite colors.
08:33And I would want to replace the front door and side lights.
08:35OK.
08:36Yeah.
08:37So this one on the exterior would be $30,000.
08:39I like that it's less.
08:40Yeah.
08:41I mean, you're speaking our language on that.
08:42We have some big numbers coming up, so don't, uh,
08:44OK.
08:45OK.
08:46Yeah.
08:47Let's see it.
08:47So how important is neighborhood life?
08:50And how important is it to save money?
08:52All right.
08:54So it's the world's biggest foyer.
08:56The first thing I noticed when I walked in
08:58was how many flooring choices you can see.
09:00So a really nice LVT would be the most affordable
09:04for such a big house, 4,600 square feet.
09:07So in here, I would want to build a wall to right here.
09:11OK.
09:12So I'm in the kitchen, and y'all are in the entry.
09:14And we could open up doors here so you're right
09:17across from the dining room.
09:19It's a good size, too.
09:20Yeah.
09:20And it's got some good light in there.
09:21I like that it creates sort of a formal entry space.
09:24Yeah.
09:25Dining room, foyer, and flooring, 25 grand.
09:29OK.
09:30We're going to get rid of everything in the kitchen.
09:32It doesn't make any sense.
09:33The kitchen will go away, so you don't have to love
09:35the kitchen or anything.
09:36It's bright.
09:37Yeah, very bright.
09:38Much brighter.
09:38But the flow's weird.
09:40Let's talk about it in here.
09:41You can understand it better from in here.
09:45This is the den.
09:46We need to get one flooring throughout.
09:48If this could be the sunroom, like the other house
09:51had a sunroom, too.
09:52But the kitchen is what we have to really talk about here.
09:54OK.
09:55We propose blowing out this kitchen wall,
09:58delete this island with the cabinets and columns
10:01for a clear sight line to the living area.
10:03And that room just gets a fresh coat of paint,
10:06new luxury vinyl tile flooring.
10:08And let's refresh those box columns with raw wood.
10:12And then in the kitchen, we could build a wall here.
10:15Behind it, through a hidden door,
10:16would be a huge walk-in pantry and a mud room.
10:20And we'd add an exterior door to make bringing in groceries
10:23a little bit easier.
10:25And then on the new wall in the kitchen,
10:28we'd have your range, your fridge all built in.
10:31We'd have an island in the middle of the room.
10:33And the sink would be in the island.
10:35And then also, new custom cabinetry on this wall.
10:38And then this window, I feel like,
10:40is an opportunity for a really cool banquette moment.
10:43Breakfast room.
10:44I really like the idea of a mud room.
10:46That's pretty cool.
10:47We have one now.
10:48And we use it all the time.
10:50So this is a very expensive kitchen.
10:54This is a $70,000 kitchen.
10:57Wow.
10:57Wow.
11:01Not just kitchen and living room.
11:03Yeah.
11:04And sunroom.
11:05All new paint and lighting.
11:07Structural issues mean it's just more expensive.
11:10I think we're just having some sticker shock in general
11:13all around, like with both houses,
11:15on how much things are costing.
11:17There will be more big numbers.
11:20Unfortunately.
11:20But one would be opening up this so
11:24that it becomes a hallway through the center
11:26of the house.
11:26Interesting.
11:27This would be your home office.
11:29Yeah.
11:29Shared office.
11:30This is cool.
11:31This is pretty cool.
11:32But we would be closing off this door.
11:33So I would have to find more of that wallpaper.
11:36And now we're in your bathroom.
11:37Take a peek in there.
11:39Get in there and look at this tub.
11:42This is fancy.
11:43Look at this.
11:43Have you ever?
11:44I've just walked down into my tub.
11:46Very strange.
11:47I want to say weird.
11:48It is interesting.
11:49And then this would be your bedroom.
11:51Huge bedroom.
11:53Great windows.
11:54Nothing to change.
11:54I mean, flooring and paint, light.
11:56So right now, when you open up this door, you're in a closet.
11:59OK.
12:00And that's a closet too.
12:01This would be a closet for Will.
12:02And then that door goes to a hallway
12:04in the center of the house.
12:05So that's where you would enter the bedroom.
12:07And we would make a new door here
12:09that would go into that bedroom on the other side.
12:11And that's a really small bedroom over there.
12:13That will become your dressing room and closet.
12:15And then in the bathroom, what we were thinking,
12:18once you close that door off, you
12:19could have a vanity and cabinet space, tons of storage
12:23in there.
12:24And then we would fill in the sunken tub
12:27and make it one level.
12:29You could have a wet room with a tub to one side.
12:32And you could also have room for a toilet closet in there.
12:35Sounds like it checks all the boxes.
12:36Back here, building a wet room, tunneling through a house,
12:40$75,000.
12:41Oh my gosh.
12:42That sounds horrible.
12:43But the total number.
12:43That's the biggest number yet.
12:45All in, $550,000.
12:46OK, well, that's better.
12:48Yeah.
12:48For sure.
12:49It's a little less than the other house.
12:50Yeah.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Yeah, it's a bigger house.
12:52You get everything we're looking for.
12:53We're anxious to find a house.
12:55We are still living in Jackson right now.
12:58So Will's going to have to commute some.
13:01I think we're just going to have to choose between a neighborhood
13:03and a better price.
13:05So we got invited to the Buck's gender reveal.
13:14That will be fun.
13:19Oh, hey.
13:20Hey.
13:20How's it going?
13:21It's good.
13:22Y'all are all friends already.
13:24I'm so glad.
13:25Thanks for coming out.
13:25Yeah, man.
13:26Yeah.
13:26Excited to find out about this baby.
13:28Yeah.
13:28Have y'all bought a house?
13:29We are really excited.
13:31There were things about both that we liked.
13:33We liked the neighborhood of the Roberts house.
13:35We have some friends there already.
13:38The space in the band sauce, that was nice.
13:39You could definitely spread it out there.
13:41It's a lot.
13:41It's a lot.
13:42A lot of house.
13:42The price is a little bit better too.
13:44A little more, so it's our price point.
13:45But I think we made a decision.
13:47We did.
13:47So we're going to go with the Roberts house.
13:49OK.
13:49I love that house.
13:51So it was the neighborhood that won, huh?
13:54And I think you're going to love it so much.
13:56Yes.
13:56It just met pretty much everything we were looking for.
13:59Well, that's one reveal down.
14:01So how are we doing this?
14:03I mean, we aren't doing anything.
14:04How are y'all?
14:04We're going to shoot some cannons.
14:05Nice.
14:06Yeah.
14:061, 2, 3.
14:10Woo!
14:11Woo!
14:12Wow!
14:13All right.
14:14It's a boy!
14:15He's going to have a brother.
14:16It's a boy!
14:17All right!
14:18Yay!
14:20Guess what?
14:21Guess what?
14:22We're having a boy.
14:23Ask me how I know.
14:25Oh, and they got the house for $350,000.
14:27So $35,000 less than asking.
14:30Now we got 12 weeks before baby boy Buck comes.
14:33It's all over me.
14:37It's a lot of demo.
14:38Are we pulling the floors up or just going over them?
14:40We plan to just go over them because, you know,
14:42we're putting the LVT all the way through the house.
14:45Let's do it.
14:49We're touching so much of the house.
14:51This is one of those where the house is very big,
14:53but so is this scope of work.
14:58The only thing that we're keeping
14:59is that left side of the closet.
15:01That's right.
15:05We are demoing the kitchen, the whole thing.
15:08Taking up all the flooring in the whole house.
15:12It's like a little tent.
15:13Yep.
15:20Hey, y'all see the brick?
15:22Really thick.
15:23But do you see underneath it?
15:25We thought it was a paper glued to the concrete,
15:27but it looks like it's just on a sand bed.
15:30So these are just sort of floating away?
15:32Yep.
15:33The plan was to just lay over top of everything.
15:35With new LVT.
15:36But the bricks are just loose in there.
15:38They're not floating.
15:39It's literally coming, like, right up.
15:42I don't feel like we can lay over the brick anymore.
15:44I mean, if it's pulling away this easily,
15:46let's just pull it up and pour concrete in this whole room.
15:49Fill it up with concrete.
15:50So this means we would have to dip into their contingency
15:53maybe $3,000, maybe a little more.
15:56And we'll pour concrete just in this room,
15:58and we'll get our level.
15:59And that is the best way we keep their budget intact.
16:03OK.
16:04All right.
16:06Let's do it.
16:14Today's brick day.
16:15We have got to remove the bricks from the front of the house
16:18because we're putting in big, awesome double doors.
16:25What's up?
16:26Hey.
16:27What on napiers?
16:28How's that going?
16:29It's going.
16:30You're able to save some?
16:31I see those in the wheelbarrow.
16:32Before that gets too heavy, can I roll it around there?
16:34Go ahead.
16:35Do I have to break through the door,
16:36or will the bricks fall on me?
16:37No, you come on through.
16:38We are taking down bricks, putting up bricks.
16:41Kitchen wall, we are shifting and making windows.
16:45We've got to add bricks and move bricks.
16:54You already got the window?
16:55Yes.
16:56You sure you're going to be able to get enough brick,
16:58you think?
16:59What, we're taking off the front door?
17:00Yeah.
17:01When we put the new door in, we're taking that brick
17:02and putting it over here also.
17:03Can I show you all something in here?
17:04Yes.
17:05Is it a problem?
17:06No.
17:07I found solid gold treasure in the office.
17:11So what is it?
17:13These boards, are y'all throwing those away?
17:16Yeah.
17:17Yep.
17:18This is what was on the floor.
17:19I know.
17:20Just where the hole in the parquet?
17:22That's where that was.
17:23Can we spread them out and let me look at all of them?
17:26That glue created patterns and lines that made art.
17:30It's abstract art as it is.
17:32Large scale art this size costs thousands
17:34and thousands of dollars.
17:36And Mary Claire and Will love modern art that's like bold.
17:40Y'all aren't going to think I'm silly.
17:42This is going in the dumpster.
17:43I'm going to make it something.
17:45You want to just put a frame around it, hang it on the wall?
17:47No, like paint on it.
17:49Like the travel lines are so bold and interesting.
17:53I could make this something.
17:54At Ole Miss in the art department,
17:56they encouraged us to take and make art out of what you have.
18:00And that might be.
18:01To be scrappy.
18:02Yes, to be scrappy.
18:03It's an important part of the job that we do every single day,
18:06taking something kind of junky and making it good.
18:08I'm excited about this.
18:09Just don't throw them in the dumpster, please.
18:11OK.
18:12We won't.
18:13I took pictures of them.
18:14And so I can just kind of doodle on the pictures
18:17so I don't go crazy on the actual board.
18:19I can't get another one.
18:27Today's the day.
18:28We level up.
18:29Yeah, we are.
18:31All the flooring removed at this point.
18:33So now it's just the kitchen is like two or three inches lower
18:36than the rest of the house.
18:39Once these floors are cured,
18:42then it's off to the races with the pretty.
18:44You going to help with this?
19:01Am I helping?
19:02I don't know.
19:03I'm trying to.
19:04Brought in some extra muscle.
19:05Got one right there.
19:06What?
19:07Jeez, Louie.
19:08Let it go down.
19:09The old front door was just so small and unwelcoming.
19:14And not big enough for the alcove.
19:16And so we're fixing that today.
19:19Why is this door so heavy?
19:21These are the biggest, heaviest.
19:23So big.
19:24Emphasis on the heavy.
19:26They're mahogany.
19:27Solid mahogany.
19:28A lot of glass.
19:29Look at that.
19:31Look at that.
19:32Mahogany doors are a great choice
19:33because it's actually harder and more durable than oak.
19:36And it has this beautiful red color to it.
19:38You know, I need a break after that.
19:40Get y'all some cold air.
19:44Oh, they look great.
19:46We have windows.
19:47Mosquitoes aren't getting in here.
19:49The guys put the windows in.
19:50And they did it so quick.
19:51And I was so happy that the windows are in.
19:53And we're sheet rocking.
19:54And things are moving forward.
19:56And then I got in here and was looking at the windows.
19:58And they are fixed.
19:59And they will not open.
20:01They're just panes.
20:03Oh, my gosh.
20:05It's like the kind you put up high.
20:07Mm-hmm.
20:09So what I'm wondering is, does she care if these windows open?
20:15She really loves to open the windows in the kitchen
20:18and let the fresh air in.
20:20She literally put that in her survey.
20:22Can we return them?
20:23Yeah, we can return these and stay on budget.
20:25So we've got to have custom windows made?
20:27Yeah, I'll have James, the window guy, make us some new ones.
20:29They should cost about the same as the windows we're returning.
20:32It's the only way to stay on schedule.
20:34The silver lining is that, you know,
20:36James will build French casements.
20:38So she'll get to, like...
20:40Yeah, let the cartoon birds come in and help you make dinner.
20:43Yeah.
20:50Parquet floor, huh?
20:52This came from the buck house.
20:55I know what you're thinking.
20:57Why didn't the homeowners want to keep it?
20:59And you couldn't refinish it or reuse it?
21:01The parquet flooring didn't run everywhere.
21:03It was only laid around the outside edge of the room.
21:06And then there was plywood in the middle.
21:08I've seen this in old houses.
21:10But I love parquet flooring, and I wanted to build something with it
21:13because it shows a different style of craftsmanship.
21:16And so this is going to be a giant headboard.
21:19So what pattern are you thinking?
21:21I want to go back exactly the way it was.
21:23Uh-huh.
21:24Start in the center.
21:26We'll run it all the way that way, go that way,
21:28and then fill the pattern in.
21:30It's kind of a modern look.
21:32The homeowners really like mid-century modern.
21:34Very simple, clean.
21:36I've already got the backer ready.
21:39It's a rectangle, so we are literally laying flooring.
21:43It's like a used puzzle, you know, where the pieces are bent just a little.
21:47We've already cut some of the pieces that we know are going to end up on the edges,
21:51and so we've got to work our way out to that.
21:53Just got to make sure we get all the right pieces in the right places.
21:56You have to get the pattern correctly with parquet flooring.
21:59While you finish this up, I'm going to start making our frame for this.
22:03Make a big frame. Make a wide one.
22:11Hey, bud.
22:13We've got a problem.
22:15Did you build this as a square or a rectangle?
22:19It's a rectangle.
22:20This is not working.
22:22I think we ran it the wrong way.
22:26We got down to the last piece.
22:28We got too big of a gap over here.
22:30Oh, we should have ran them the other way is what you're saying.
22:33Dang.
22:35I think we're going to have to start over from the beginning.
22:37Start over?
22:38No, no. I'll take it apart. You put it back together.
22:40That's the deal.
22:42Josh, I insist. This is not working.
22:45I'm going to go home. I'll see you later, Josh.
22:54Stubbs, this is maybe the biggest project we've ever asked of you.
22:58Right?
22:59It's going to be a lot.
23:00Not only are you doing the whole kitchen and pantry,
23:03this is their bathroom,
23:05and we're just going to have his and hers vanities left or right of the window,
23:09and there's going to be a freestanding tub sitting right in front of the window,
23:12but this closet is the biggest custom closet build-out we've ever done.
23:17We're throwing a lot at Stubbs today.
23:19This house is huge, and he is responsible for cabineting,
23:23like, every single room we're touching.
23:25Let's start where it's easy.
23:27Here, we're going to have two rods.
23:30Gotcha.
23:31It's going to come around to here and then stop here.
23:33We're going to have open shelving for purse storage,
23:37and then drawers underneath that are built-in.
23:39And then here, we need a real slim island
23:43that's just big enough for laundry hampers that you would pull out.
23:48Here, she really wants an ironing board that's inside a cabinet.
23:52So you open the cabinet, bring out the ironing board,
23:55a full-height mirror, and then open shelving for shoes or to ceiling.
24:00So it's going to be the perfect, totally custom, out-of-control closet.
24:05Oh, yeah.
24:07We're mixing mid-century modern and traditional styles.
24:10This house is going to be rich with texture,
24:14as far as we have a lot of natural wood.
24:17Then we're going to have painted surfaces,
24:19and so texture is a big part of the whole design plan.
24:24We're going to be ordering a lot of stone,
24:27and I just want to choose one stone that works everywhere.
24:32I think we're at, like, six full slabs will be used on this house.
24:36It is such a big order that the stone maker sent Kellen to walk us through it.
24:41I've had a few samples here.
24:43These are all colors that I thought would be perfect with everything we're doing.
24:46So we have two polished. We have this one honed.
24:49And the good thing about the honed, it's kind of got that matte finish.
24:52I love the honed finish.
24:54Mary Clear, our homeowner, I don't know if she would appreciate
24:57how fingerprint-y honed finishes can be.
25:00Sure.
25:01I want honed, but honed granite definitely shows fingerprints.
25:04It starts off as a polished slab, so it'll look like this,
25:08and then they come back and hone it and then reseal it on top,
25:12so it drastically minimizes those fingerprint markings.
25:16We're going to use brass throughout the house,
25:19and then we're going to mixture our faucets in the kitchen and the bathroom.
25:22God, look how that makes it pop.
25:24It's really a cream color.
25:26It has some gray and golden veining that's very subtle, very light.
25:30But it introduces a little bit more warmth into these very neutral spaces.
25:34Okay, do we have any limitations on size?
25:37Because I need real big slabs.
25:39I want to go floor to ceiling and wall to wall with slabs in the shower.
25:43And then our island is huge, too.
25:46And I'm going to use the same stone everywhere.
25:48I think you might have just enough space.
25:50This house is big, so I think using the same stone throughout will create some consistency.
25:55Everything is very neutral that's permanent.
25:57That's the mid-century thing that she loves, I think.
25:59There's a minimalist element.
26:01I'm going to go with, let's do this one.
26:04I think that's the one.
26:06Look, it feels really good.
26:08If we had that on all these, that'd be really pretty.
26:11That's going to be beautiful.
26:12We have made our selection, we've ordered our stone,
26:15and now it should be maybe a week and we can install.
26:18We have a baby on the way. It better be here in a week.
26:21It's not ours.
26:29I'm excited that I can finally turn the floor plywood into art.
26:34OSB, particle board.
26:35It's going to be art, though.
26:37It ain't going to be particle, but it will still be particle board.
26:40Hey, you're putting the art in particle.
26:46I took a picture of our particle board.
26:49I printed it out, and then I drew on it with a marker.
26:52That's my sketch.
26:53So I knew the form and shape I wanted to carve out of our glue mess.
27:00You couldn't look at that glue on that board and not see something.
27:03It was like those psychology tests.
27:05I saw a lady that was real kind of sassy and doing some of that dancing.
27:12This painting is going to be in the office when you walk in on the left.
27:16In the office, I'm using curtains that have ginkgo leaves on them.
27:19Because right outside the window.
27:21It's a ginkgo tree.
27:25So this floral pattern that I'm painting on the dress,
27:28I'm going to do in abstracted ginkgo leaves,
27:31and that feels like it's a little more connected to the house
27:34and the way it's always been.
27:42Countertops are here.
27:44Awesome.
27:45This looks awesome.
27:47I'll stay here.
27:48Okay.
27:49Mary Claire, she is very pregnant.
27:51So we need to get countertops and a whole house finished real fast
27:54so they can live here.
28:01There's just so much stone.
28:04So even though they brought a full crew, they got three guys.
28:07I'm still having to help.
28:09Ooh, it looks so good.
28:15Even with headphones, I heard it.
28:18This is the biggest island top I've ever seen.
28:22Is that the island?
28:23Mm-hmm.
28:25Dang.
28:26Big mama.
28:30I was doing everything I could to make sure it doesn't look like a white kitchen.
28:33There's a lot of nuance and warmth,
28:36and it feels rich, I think, with, like, a little texture with the wood
28:39and the windows and the brass strapping on the hood vent.
28:41It's like we're doing so much, but it's also kind of a minimalist look.
28:44That's the mid-century thing that she loves, I think.
28:47There's a minimalist element.
28:48Did y'all bring the vanity tops for the bathroom?
28:50Yes, got them on the truck.
28:51Have you seen the sinks?
28:52They're beautiful.
28:53They're really different.
28:54Yes, they are.
28:55I want to see how it looks.
28:56They're clear.
28:57Yes, they're clear-ish.
28:58Okay, I'm going to keep working on the painting.
28:59A lot of stone in this house.
29:00The bathroom sink is a little different and unexpected.
29:03It adds a little more richness and texture and color
29:05to a bathroom that's otherwise very neutral.
29:07We need little moments of darkness, and this glass bowl does that.
29:19Today's plumbing day.
29:20Yeah.
29:21Apparently, we are moving in a ...
29:23A very heavy bathtub.
29:24Very.
29:25What is this?
29:26Okay, this is the last piece, right?
29:27Should be.
29:28I assumed this was a backsplash.
29:30No.
29:31It's a shelf for the shower.
29:33Something like that.
29:34Yeah.
29:35We're going to have the glass centered on that curb.
29:37And then split it between the wall.
29:38Yeah.
29:39I think that works.
29:40Right there is good.
29:41All right.
29:42Yep.
29:43This looks amazing.
29:44I love these big slabs.
29:45Me too.
29:46What up?
29:47Thanks, Scott.
29:48No problem.
29:49Cute.
29:50We were supposed to have flooring in here by now
29:52so that they could set the bathtub.
29:54Oh.
29:57There has been a scheduling snafu.
30:00Breakdown of communication.
30:01I told the flooring guys,
30:03please start in the bathroom.
30:05That's the most important thing.
30:06They did.
30:07They started in the guest bathroom.
30:09We're on bathroom.
30:10The tub has to go right there,
30:11but you need the floors in.
30:13There's no world where you could set the tub
30:15and we could just run that floor real tight up against it.
30:18If I don't have the finished floor of the tub,
30:20it won't work out right.
30:22And I didn't think about it until I saw your happy faces.
30:25Maybe you don't know this, maybe you do,
30:27but getting a plumber scheduled is big doings.
30:31When you say come this day, you better be ready.
30:34They have so many jobs to get to
30:36that we are being very inconvenient for them
30:39if we're not ready.
30:40You think y'all could come first thing Monday?
30:42I'm not going to be here.
30:43I got a cruise lined up leaving Sunday.
30:46We just got to find a time now to install the tub.
30:49We're running out of time pretty fast
30:51because there is a baby on the way.
30:53Mary Claire's about to have a baby.
30:55She's going to want a bathtub.
30:56What does the tub weigh?
30:57It's right at 500 pounds.
30:59It's 471 pounds.
31:01It's solid cast iron.
31:03I think Pine and I got this.
31:04It could happen.
31:05It could happen.
31:06You think it's a two-man tub?
31:07Yeah.
31:08This is the heavy house.
31:09Everything we're moving in is real big and heavy.
31:11Heavy slabs, heavy tubs.
31:13I've been seven months pregnant
31:15needing a bathroom renovation to be finished,
31:17but she's like nine and a half months pregnant.
31:20You want her coming into this house
31:22with as little stress from us as possible.
31:25She's thinking about other things right now.
31:27Luckily, the flooring guys really hustled
31:29and they got the tub in.
31:31We, at this point, shouldn't have any...
31:34Please don't say that.
31:35We should be on time, I think, I hope.
31:37Now let's make sure baby Buck is also on time.
31:40Not early.
31:41And not early.
31:42♪♪♪♪
31:49You can hear it right now.
31:50There's a finish nailer going.
31:51We're putting down shoe molding.
31:53We're installing cabinet doors.
31:56Painters are coming behind those guys and touching up.
32:00It's a lot.
32:02More heavy stuff moving in.
32:04This headboard is stupid heavy.
32:08You really used the parquet?
32:09Yes, we really used the parquet.
32:10You didn't, like, replicate it with new one?
32:12No, it is the parquet flooring.
32:14Okay.
32:15I'm not breathing hard.
32:16I'm not even breathing hard.
32:17I don't have to work out today or tomorrow.
32:20♪♪♪♪♪
32:27Mary Claire is very pregnant,
32:29and I can't wait to get them in this house.
32:31I'm going to feel relieved.
32:32She's going to feel relieved.
32:33We needed to hurry up because she could go into labor
32:36at any time.
32:37I don't see a world where they're unhappy with this design,
32:40and it feels really spot on for what she asked for.
32:43Mal, do you know where the inserts are
32:45for the pillow covers?
32:46No.
32:47They're probably in my car, though.
32:49I love that.
32:50I'm just loving that marble.
32:52I bought another piece.
32:53It's vintage.
32:54Oh, Mallory shines any time I ask her to help me shop,
32:58and she found really special pieces.
33:00Mary Claire will love that.
33:01Yeah?
33:02And orange.
33:03It's the accent color everywhere.
33:04The sofa and the den is orange.
33:05Using mid-century furniture and traditional style together,
33:10it's very Mary Claire and Will.
33:12Gosh, I love that table.
33:14I love it when we have our homeowners' objects
33:17that inspire, and so we took all of that
33:20and put it in the house wherever we could.
33:22The headboard, it doesn't feel like a headboard.
33:24It's like art and texture.
33:26It's so custom.
33:27It's exactly what she had wished for.
33:30Hmm.
33:31What's going on with the shower?
33:32Yeah, about that.
33:33Is it going to be finished?
33:34There's just not going to be glass.
33:36It's coming next week,
33:37but her baby could be coming this week,
33:39so I think it's more important that we just let them
33:42get in the house and the shower glass can come
33:44maybe while they're in the hospital.
33:46There's still two other full bathrooms they can use.
33:48We need more towels, then.
33:49We do need more towels.
33:51I have been very pregnant with my house
33:53under renovation before, and it's stressful.
33:56She can't see a picture in her mind
33:57of what it's going to look like for her family,
33:59and after tomorrow, she can finally know
34:03what this is going to be,
34:04what the next chapter of their life as a family of four
34:07is going to look like.
34:09It's been a big one.
34:10Welcome to the buck house.
34:12Wow.
34:14Is this a good reaction?
34:19It's so good.
34:21It's really great.
34:22You're so tickled about it.
34:24It's so great.
34:25I love it.
34:32It looks so good.
34:34It looks so different.
34:35It looks great.
34:36It looks, oh my gosh, it looks so different.
34:38It looks amazing.
34:39It really does.
34:41Oh, I love it.
34:43The giggles because you have the giggles.
34:46I love it.
34:48I'm sorry.
34:52I'm just dying.
34:53It looks so good.
34:55Why is this my reaction?
35:00It just looks like you want to live here.
35:03It doesn't look like the same house.
35:05It's so bright and foamy.
35:07We painted the entire exterior,
35:09all the brick, all the trim.
35:13I am obsessed with the doors.
35:15They are solid mahogany.
35:16I was just thinking about trick-or-treaters.
35:19I think the doors just totally transform it.
35:22That's not so much lighting.
35:23Let's go see how much light.
35:24Yes.
35:25Let's take the safest path possible.
35:29Oh, wow.
35:33It's beautiful.
35:35It's very different.
35:38A little bit.
35:41I love it.
35:43It's traditional,
35:44but it can also be unexpectedly modern.
35:47Right.
35:48This is really cool.
35:49I did this painting.
35:50This came off your floor.
35:51It had glue all over the back of it.
35:53I looked at it and thought,
35:54this looks like an abstract painting.
35:56I just added paint to it.
35:58I made it a dancing lady
35:59and I put ginkgo leaves on her dress
36:01because of the tree right outside the window.
36:04That's incredible.
36:05That is so cool.
36:06I never would have guessed.
36:07It sort of blows my mind
36:09that that's carpet glue.
36:12The creativity behind that is pretty amazing.
36:15We just love the mix and match
36:17and the juxtaposition of the styles.
36:20I love the modern with the traditional.
36:22It looks so good.
36:23There's so much more to see.
36:24Let's head to the kitchen next.
36:26Don't go into labor.
36:28I'll try my best.
36:30Try hard.
36:31This is beautiful.
36:32I love the blue.
36:33It's so warm and homey.
36:38Our table.
36:39I love your table.
36:40It looks so good in here.
36:42And the chairs.
36:43I cannot wait to have our family here for the holidays.
36:46It's going to be perfect.
36:48I love it.
36:49Do you remember the kitchen before?
36:58Can you believe this?
37:01This is amazing.
37:02This looks so good.
37:04This is not the same.
37:06No, this is not.
37:07How did you do this?
37:08We took like six different little rooms
37:10and made it one big one.
37:15Are you going to pass out?
37:17Oh my God, it's beautiful.
37:19This looks so good.
37:20It's beautiful.
37:21Oh my God, it's just incredible.
37:24I love the color.
37:26Not white.
37:27No, which I love that it's not white.
37:29It's soft and it's creamy.
37:30It's this really sweet suede kind of feeling in here.
37:34Oh my God, it's incredible.
37:36I can't believe like this is the same kitchen.
37:39I was like worried about the space and the storage.
37:42The space in our lives like function is right up there.
37:45A nice walk-in pantry.
37:46You have to go see that.
37:47Yes.
37:48Oh my gosh.
37:49And all the storage.
37:50It looks great.
37:51Oh my gosh, I love it.
37:55The windows.
37:56They feel very fairytale.
37:57Yes.
37:58Like they'd swing open and birds would fly in.
38:00Yes.
38:01These are custom mahogany windows.
38:03The brick floors were just too unstable to put flooring on top.
38:07So we took out the brick, we poured concrete,
38:10so now you have level flooring in here and the rest of the house.
38:13I love it.
38:14The architecture of the house had a very simple,
38:17almost English style design.
38:19And so we wanted to bring some very simplified,
38:23slightly European looks to the kitchen too.
38:26With the ledges and the hood vent.
38:29And just the simplicity of everything.
38:31It's not fussy.
38:32It's not tile for the backsplash.
38:33It's just solid surface stone.
38:36I just am totally.
38:37I just want to sit here and just look at it all.
38:39We're done.
38:40Let's take it all in.
38:41Let's go see the den.
38:42Okay.
38:46Oh wow, look at that.
38:47That's amazing.
38:48Oh wow.
38:49I love it.
38:51It's like all of the things before that I feel like weighed it down.
38:55I love that the wood just pops now.
38:57This wall feels real good.
38:59It just is like amazing.
39:01It's so much brighter in here now too.
39:02Yeah.
39:03It was so dark and we didn't want to just erase the way that it was.
39:06And now the mantle really stands out.
39:07It does.
39:08And then Mallory helped me find lots of mid-century pieces that worked with yours.
39:12Let's head down the hall.
39:13Okay.
39:14Yeah, let's go.
39:17Wow.
39:18See anything familiar?
39:22It's the floor.
39:23Yes.
39:24Wow.
39:25It's the floor.
39:26The floor.
39:27That is incredible.
39:28That is so cool.
39:29We loved the floors before.
39:30Yeah.
39:31I mean, we were really disappointed that we weren't going to be able to keep them.
39:33So I love that this is here.
39:35How did you do that?
39:36The hardest thing was getting it to land evenly.
39:39I'm floored.
39:41You're floored.
39:44Mom jokes.
39:45She's got them.
39:48Oh my gosh.
39:50Wow.
39:51Oh my gosh.
39:57The laughs.
39:58The laughs are back.
39:59It's back.
40:00This is amazing.
40:03And then in here, a little surprise.
40:05Oh, okay, smart.
40:06Dirty clothes.
40:07Yeah, for dirty clothes.
40:08That makes so much sense.
40:09Perfect.
40:10This is just more than I could have even imagined.
40:14You weren't tired for this.
40:15This is, we both did.
40:17Enjoy it.
40:18In our own ways.
40:19Yeah.
40:20Well, you have your own closet.
40:21Oh, I can't wait to see it.
40:22It's almost the same.
40:23Yeah.
40:24Oh my gosh.
40:26It is good.
40:27Yeah.
40:28This is more than good.
40:29It looks so good.
40:32My God, look at it.
40:33I know.
40:34I made it for you.
40:35This looks so good, man.
40:38You okay?
40:41It is, oh my God.
40:42Oh my God, it's incredible.
40:44It's beautiful.
40:45What a dream.
40:46Oh my God, look at all this space.
40:52This is amazing.
40:53The shower is a little bit open air.
40:55Open concept, I like it.
40:57It's very open.
40:58You are too pregnant for us to make you wait until there is shower glass.
41:02It'll be here next week.
41:03Okay.
41:04But I thought, we gotta let them see this house.
41:06She's gotta get in here and start nesting.
41:08The stone is just gorgeous.
41:10And the tub.
41:12I mean, what a dream.
41:14We share a tub with a two-year-old right now.
41:16Cast iron.
41:18I don't see a problem at all not having glass there for the shower.
41:22I've actually decided just for the bathtub.
41:24That's plenty for her right now.
41:25Yeah.
41:27The sink bowls are an unexpected.
41:29These are so great.
41:31Cool moment.
41:32They're glass in this smoky color.
41:34Okay.
41:35That I thought was so pretty.
41:36Love that.
41:37I love this detail.
41:38Like, this is so beautiful.
41:40What do you think?
41:41Looks really good.
41:42It's beautiful, y'all.
41:44It's just beautiful.
41:46What a dream come true.
41:48Here, let's walk through.
41:49Yes.
41:50We'll go through the sunroom.
41:51The kitchen is beautiful from the sunroom.
41:53I think this is definitely a holiday house.
41:55This is a house that I can't wait to bring our family to
42:00and to start new traditions, keep old traditions,
42:04but bring them to Laurel.
42:06When I first heard the price of everything,
42:08I was a little shocked.
42:09But now seeing the final product, y'all did some work here.
42:12It's incredible.
42:14I think the ways that we changed it,
42:16we still stayed true to what the house is.
42:18I do love that we've, like, emphasized in the best way.
42:22Some of the parts that were already here
42:25instead of just erasing them.
42:27You got it for $350,000,
42:29and everything that we did was $215,000,
42:32so all in, $565,000.
42:34Okay.
42:35But you said you wanted to stay under $600,000.
42:37I did, yeah.
42:38I'm just glad you didn't have a baby today.
42:39I'm very glad.
42:40Yeah, me too.
42:41We have made it.
42:42I hope it's a great start in Laurel.
42:44I am so excited and ready to nest in this house.
42:49We can now focus on the baby coming
42:52and our family growing
42:54and not just to have a home to do that,
42:57but to have one that looks like this.
42:59Let's go nest.
