This is a reading of some contemporary reviews of The Grass is Singing, Doris Lessing's debut novel in the 1950s. It was very well received , and even I enjoyed reading it at university. Lessing is by no means snobbish in the way she writes. People are intimidated by her Nobel award. But in my view anyone, no matter what educational background they might have, can find pleasure in her books.
