During Vietnam's long struggle for independence against Japanese, French and American invaders, millions died. Yet, the media narrative has been dominated by the sufferings of American soldiers. To remedy this imbalance Historyradio.org therefore presents a reading of "Eyes" by Nam Cao (1917-1951). Nam Cao was closely associated with the Vietnamese cause, and story presents us with a realistic, but slightly didactic view of the revolutionaries.

The text is taken from a 2013 article in Asian Journal of Literature, Culture and Society, an open access journal. Downloads of the text have been made available through the Core and Base open access search portals.

The translation is by Quan Man Ha. The narrator is an AI voice, though it hard to hear, and the music you hear at the start and at the end of the program comes from a creative commons performance of traditional Vietnamese music at youtube.
