In this chapter from the war-time novel by the fantastically talented French writer Henri Barbusse (1873-1935), the battles of the First World War are brought to life. Unfortunately, Barbusse would later in life become a well known supporter of Joseph Stalin. But, his war time experiences were very much real, and his ability to communicate them through fiction beyond question. The novel was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1916
