00:00Welcome to your Afternoon Weather Update from the Met Office.
00:03Another fairly drab and dismal day out there for most places.
00:07But it's not just across the UK where there's a lot of cloud.
00:10It's smothering much of northern and central Europe,
00:13all thanks to a chunky area of high pressure,
00:16which is keeping the easterly breeze going.
00:18Although not as strong as yesterday,
00:20it's still funneling in quite a lot of thick cloud.
00:23That cloud providing a few spots of drizzly rain here and there as well.
00:27Even the odd flake of snow likely over the hills of northern England and southern Scotland.
00:32A few more showers, light showers, going into the Midlands,
00:35East Anglia and the South East, perhaps even into East Wales.
00:38But most places dry and drab.
00:41Now, there are a few breaks in the cloud.
00:43We've seen some sunny spells in Devon, Cornwall,
00:45a few breaks appearing in West Wales and certainly Western Scotland,
00:48the favoured spot for a bit of blue sky through the rest of today.
00:52Wherever you are, though, it is on the chilly side
00:54and it feels particularly cold again on these North Sea coasts.
00:58As I mentioned, the wind not as strong as yesterday,
01:00but any breeze coming in from the North Sea at this time of year is going to make it feel cold.
01:04The thermometer will read five or six at best
01:07and when you add on that breeze, it feels much closer to freezing.
01:12So, yes, a pretty chilly day, a pretty grey day,
01:15still some light showers here and there as we go into the evening.
01:18But again, nothing too heavy.
01:20Most places will have a dry night.
01:22We'll keep a lot of cloud,
01:23but I think we'll see a few more breaks developing in the cloud tonight,
01:26of course, Western areas in particular.
01:28So, some lengthy clear spells allowing a frost for Western Scotland,
01:32also parts of North West England, West Wales, South West England
01:36and parts of Northern Ireland are seeing a few breaks in the cloud.
01:39Temperature-wise, well, it depends on that cloud cover.
01:42If we keep the cloud, it's tending to hold up at two or three degrees,
01:46but certainly that blue hue on the map suggesting a fairly extensive frost
01:50across Western Scotland with clear skies.
01:52And any clearer skies further south will also allow temperatures
01:55in rural areas to get down to freezing.
01:57So, another pretty chilly start to Thursday,
01:59but a better chance of seeing a few more sunny spells
02:02across Western areas in particular.
02:04But even further east, there may be a few more glimmers of brightness.
02:08However, it will actually probably feel a bit colder tomorrow.
02:11Slightly colder air is moving in.
02:13The odd shower, but most places just, again, drab and dry.
02:18But, as I say, temperatures are going to struggle a little bit.
02:20The winds in the east will be a little bit lighter tomorrow,
02:23but temperatures are only four or five degrees at best.
02:25Where we'll see the breeze picking up is in the southwest,
02:28actually getting quite gusty here by the end of the day
02:31as the cloud starts to thicken.
02:33And eventually, some outbreaks of rain just trickling in
02:36towards the Isles of Sey and West Cornwall.
02:39That is some signs of an attempted change in our weather pattern
02:43as we head towards the end of the week.
02:45But it is only going to be an attempt.
02:47These weather fronts just gradually edging in,
02:49but fizzling out as they bump up against high pressure further east.
02:53And this high pressure to low pressure battle
02:56is likely to continue into the weekend.
02:58Weather fronts will make slow progress across the country.
03:01They could provide some damp weather
03:03and even a little bit of snow in places during the course of the weekend.
03:07But even by the end of the weekend,
03:08those weather fronts not making much progress.
03:10High pressure and the cold air still in place across many eastern areas.
03:13So it's a real battleground as we head into next week.
03:16For more on that, you can catch our 10-day trend forecast.
03:20Alex Burkill will be recording that.
03:22And that will be available on our YouTube channel by this afternoon.
