00:00As the Warriors do indeed make a big deal,
00:02yes, you and I had about 10 minutes, maybe 11 minutes,
00:05to talk it out on Warriors Live last night
00:07before the game got going.
00:09But a wild scene, I saw Om Youngmasuk,
00:12ESPN's NBA and Warriors reporter,
00:15who was on with us yesterday prior to the deal.
00:18He went on TV today and said he was there in Utah
00:22watching all this unfold, and this is the craziest thing
00:24he's ever seen happen in all of his years
00:28as an NBA reporter.
00:30Watching Steve Kerr pull everybody off of the floor
00:33and then the looks on everyone's faces as they emerged.
00:36This was an emotional thing.
00:38I know everybody felt like it sort of,
00:40something needed to happen.
00:42I certainly feel that way.
00:44I got mixed feelings about this deal,
00:46and we want to hear what you think about it as well.
00:49We are completely wide open for you today.
00:52It is reaction day for all of our listeners,
00:55eight at eight, 957-9570, and the best way I can say it,
00:59I don't love the deal, but I understand it.
01:03Right, and I'm kind of with you as far as that.
01:05I do understand the deal,
01:07and I also don't necessarily love it.
01:10And I'm thinking about yesterday, Mark,
01:12and what the actual mechanics of what happened would be.
01:16Because, you know, anytime you do a move like this,
01:19you want to tell somebody face to face.
01:21And, you know, you had Dennis Schroeder,
01:24you had Kyle Anderson,
01:25you had Andrew Wiggins and Lindy Waters.
01:27You had four different guys that you had to talk to
01:30one-on-one about what was going to happen,
01:32yet you don't really have the luxury of time to do that.
01:35So he pulls everyone off the court,
01:37and you go in the locker room,
01:39and he probably has to do it en masse.
01:42He has to do it with the group and say,
01:44guys, there's been a move, and you're gone,
01:47and you're gone, and you're gone,
01:48and you're not playing, and whatnot.
01:50And I did read a report yesterday about Steve Kerr
01:53in the tunnel with Lindy Waters,
01:55and maybe it came to Steve later
01:57that Lindy was a part of it.
01:59Because the deal, as we knew it,
02:01was Jimmy in, Schroeder and Kyle and Wiggins out.
02:07But we didn't know where they were going
02:09until after our show was over.
02:11They still don't.
02:12I mean, Schroeder changed teams again today.
02:14Right, and so.
02:15He was in Utah, which was kind of appropriate.
02:18Now he ended up in Detroit.
02:19Right.
02:20And he's going to stay with the Pistons.
02:20The whole thing got complex as it all does.
02:22The whole thing got crazy,
02:23and so I just wonder in the moment,
02:24and when Steve actually came back out on the court,
02:27and we can ask him this next week when we talk to him,
02:29but Steve clearly was a little bit shaken,
02:32and Steph, when he came back out,
02:34was shaken, and everybody is shaken.
02:36So in real time, unfortunately, in the social media era,
02:40you kind of have to do this all quickly
02:42because the news is going to get out
02:44before you have a chance to tell the people.
02:46And I actually think Steve Kerr had a point yesterday
02:49of like, why isn't the deadline
02:51kind of more aligned with All-Star weekend
02:53so that situations like last night don't end up happening
02:56because the Warriors go out there,
02:58first of all, down four players,
03:00and then second of all, with heavy hearts.
03:03Should they be able to beat Utah anyway?
03:05Yes.
03:06And did they have them?
03:07Yes.
03:08So this is not an excuse,
03:09but just what a weird situation that unfolded last night.
03:13But let's get to it.
03:158-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-70, great, the deal.
03:20Let's talk this out on how you as a Warrior fan feel today
03:25because I really do, it's a conflicted feeling,
03:29I think, for a lot of Warrior fans.
03:31There's no way that you can, at least I don't think,
03:34you're going to come out and say this is a perfect deal.
03:36That's the guy we want, that's the age we want,
03:39that's the attitude we want,
03:40and that's the skill set we want.
03:42It's not any of those things.
03:44But what I acknowledge is it's something,
03:48it's an aggressive swing,
03:50and it does make the Warriors in this moment
03:52a more interesting watch.
03:54There is now renewed curiosity to see what they can do.
03:57That's fair.
03:58I don't think that they necessarily got better.
03:59I mean, if you look at Jimmy Butler versus Andrew Wiggins
04:02as far as a player versus player deal,
04:06then I do think that right now Jimmy Butler's
04:08probably a little bit better than Andrew Wiggins,
04:10and that's fine.
04:12But then you take out some of your depth
04:14and Schroeder and Slo Mo and they're gone,
04:16and Lindy Waters, whatever,
04:17he wasn't playing that much anyway for the most part,
04:20but I look at what it's made you this year,
04:23and I don't think that you're necessarily
04:25that much quote unquote better,
04:28but you go into next year,
04:29and then Jimmy Butler,
04:30he got a new extension for 60 million a year?
04:33I didn't see that coming.
04:34I mean, that's where I got to take the L.
04:36I said all week, get Jimmy Butler just as a rental,
04:41and then maybe the price is much, much cheaper.
04:44Maybe you do that for just expiring contracts
04:47or what have you.
04:48When that report came out earlier in the week
04:50where they're like,
04:51Jimmy doesn't want to sign an extension.
04:52You heard me say it a bunch of times.
04:53I'm like, good,
04:54the Warriors don't want to sign you to an extension either,
04:56but then they did,
04:58and this does risk Jonathan Kaminga.
05:01You didn't give him up,
05:03but you're a little bit out in the middle of the street
05:08without your cell phone right now
05:10because if Brooklyn wants to offer Jonathan Kaminga
05:13$33 million a year next year,
05:16the Warriors might,
05:17I don't know what kind of spending ownership
05:19we'll want to do,
05:21but the Warriors might have to just let him go.
05:23Well, even if it's 30,
05:24and I don't know where the breaking point is
05:26on a per annual basis,
05:29and I guess Jonathan Kaminga could sign a deal
05:32that is more backloaded.
05:34Like, you know,
05:34you could sign for five and let's just say 150,
05:38which is 30 per,
05:39and it could be 20, 20,
05:42and then 30, 40, 40,
05:44and you know, that might,
05:45and I don't know the total math of it.
05:46I'm just kind of doing it off the top of my head,
05:48but you could do it backloaded,
05:50kind of like an NFL contract.
05:52This is guaranteed,
05:53so he would get his money,
05:55but you could make it so he's keepable
05:57until Jimmy and Steph are gone,
05:59and then he goes to a bigger number.
06:01You can do that,
06:02and yes, I know there's a lot of you,
06:03like, in fact,
06:04thank you for those of us who are,
06:07however you're listening,
06:08whether it's on the app,
06:09the radio,
06:10whether you're on YouTube,
06:11and it was Jeremy Wong who just said,
06:13Joe Lincoln's not going to let Kaminga walk.
06:15You're insane.
06:16It's not just about letting him walk.
06:18It's about can you even match the number?
06:21Like, do you want to go into the second apron?
06:24Right.
06:25Where every dollar becomes $10?
06:26Like, you can do that.
06:28You're allowed to,
06:29but the Warriors have long said
06:31that this is not their goal.
06:33That is not the way that they want to run their business,
06:35especially when they're hanging around
06:36in the play-in tournament every year,
06:38and so you have put yourself in a spot
06:42where there's only so much money.
06:44It's a soft cap league,
06:46but there's only so much money.
06:47You've got to fit everybody.
06:49You have to have enough players on the team.
06:51All of them have to at least be making a minimum salary.
06:55If Brooklyn offers Jonathan Kaminga
06:57some of the numbers that we've bandied about,
06:5935, 40 million a year,
07:01I don't think the Warriors can do that.
07:03Like, it's not about want to.
07:05It's about can they?
07:07It's going to come down to me about have to,
07:10and I don't think that they're going to have to,
07:11and it's not only because he's missed six weeks
07:14due to injury.
07:15I do think it's because the market,
07:17you mentioned it off the air,
07:18you and I in the green room about,
07:20like, what do the teams have the money
07:22to give him 35 million a year?
07:24And the answer is not that many.
07:26There aren't that many teams
07:27that have 35 million to give him per year,
07:30so I do think that Kaminga's value
07:32is going to be suppressed,
07:33not by how he's played,
07:35but by market forces.
07:37Yeah, absolutely.
07:38Market forces.
07:39Market forces and his injury.
07:40This is terrible timing for him.
07:42It's why his face has that look on it
07:44over there on the bench every day,
07:45because he's watching.
07:47He's watching his price go down,
07:49and by the way,
07:50you know what else might suppress him a little bit?
07:52Jimmy Butler's here.
07:53Jimmy Butler.
07:54How many shots does Jonathan have
07:56on this floor right now?
07:57Steph and Jimmy are here,
07:59so how many shots do you have?
08:02Andrew Wiggins was passive
08:04and would be like,
08:05here.
08:05You.
08:06That's Andrew.
08:07You need some money.
08:08How about some shots?
08:09But if you're Kaminga.
08:10Jimmy Butler ain't doing that.
08:11But you're playing for a contract,
08:13and this is where I worry about Kaminga
08:15when he comes back,
08:16because he's seen all this,
08:17and he knows that Jimmy Butler's getting 60 million,
08:20and he knows that his money is tied
08:22to other teams and what they have,
08:24and also the Warriors and what they have,
08:26so if I'm Kaminga,
08:27and I see all this,
08:29I'm coming out firing trying to get me mine.
08:32I tell you what.
08:34Sure, but now you have people sort of like,
08:38the way you just laid that out,
08:39people are pushing in opposite directions.
08:41I don't want any Warrior coming out firing,
08:44looking for mine.
08:45I want read and react system,
08:46play good basketball,
08:47win basketball games.
08:49You don't want five people with five different goals
08:53out there on the court at the same time.
08:54So let's talk to you all about this, okay?
08:57Jimmy Buckets is a Warrior.
08:58I think we, at least the two of us,
09:01agree something needed to happen.
09:04This is an aggressive swing.
09:05The Warriors are more exciting.
09:06That's all true,
09:07but I am very hesitant to say this is a great deal.
09:11This is the one big swing they could take,
09:15and he's not a perfect star.
09:17He is 35.
09:19He is not a great outside shooter,
09:21and his attitude can get away from him sometimes.
09:24Yeah, you think?
09:25And I cannot wait to see he and Draymond together.
09:28Oh gosh.
09:29You know, if things go a little bit sour
09:31over the course of a game or a week,
09:33and Jimmy Butler's a tough personality, a strong one,
09:37and I was listening to the morning roast this morning,
09:39and they were coming up with nicknames
09:41for Draymond and Jimmy Butler.
09:43Oh boy.
09:44And I think the winning nickname was The Suspendables.
09:48That's pretty good.
09:49I offered up to Joe Shasky.
09:51I just texted him The Thrash Brothers,
09:54but the Suspendables came from a chat GPT,
09:58so it almost doesn't count with the robots chiming in,
10:02but take it from a college professor.
10:04Yes, it does.
10:05There is no putting that toothpaste back in the tube.
10:08If you don't accept chat GPT,
10:10you can head right over here to the 4 p.m. Hoffbrow
10:13and take a nap because you're old.
10:14I wonder about you as a professor.
10:17Do you try to like suss that out?
10:18And do you?
10:19No.
10:20A lot of students will use that.
10:21No, no.
10:22You'll allow it?
10:23You have no choice.
10:24That is the future.
10:25You can fight what people are going to do,
10:27or you can work with it.
10:29So I try to work with it.
10:31What I try to do is make sure there's no plagiarism,
10:34but chat GPT, there's no fighting that.
10:37Are you plagiarizing if you just take chat GPT
10:40and use it as your answer?
10:41No, because that's an original piece.
10:42It's not really an original piece.
10:43It is.
10:44It's just not yours.
10:45Right.
10:46It's just not yours, but hey.
10:47You're plagiarizing a robot.
10:48I cheated off someone else's paper before.
10:50It's no different.
10:51Not me.
10:51888-957-9570.
10:53Let's get going on you.
10:56Let's do Warrior Dave in Concord real quick.
10:59Hey, Warrior Dave, what's up?
11:02Hey guys, hope you're having a great day.
11:04When the Warriors let go of four guys,
11:06they gave up 88 minutes and 39 points per game,
11:10realizing not all four guys played on the same night,
11:13but not counting Schroeder,
11:15they played 36 to 43 of the games.
11:18Where are they going to fill the games and the points?
11:21And I'll take it offline.
11:22Thanks, appreciate that, Dave.
11:24I mean, look, obviously that's the creativity
11:28that Steve Kerr is going to have to use.
11:30By the same token,
11:32those of us who have been barking about,
11:34oh, there's too much depth.
11:35Right.
11:36And we need minutes for this guy.
11:36We need minutes for that.
11:37Well, now here they are.
11:38I think you're going to get a lot more Moses Moody.
11:41Brandon Podjemski looks like his last year self again.
11:44This is who we're going to see in those minutes now.
11:46Yeah, and Quentin Post and Buddy Heald
11:48is going to play as well.
11:49And maybe a little bit more Pat Spencer
11:51than you would otherwise like.
11:53But when you trade four for one,
11:56you're asking your 10th, 11th, and 12th men
11:58to step up and do more.
11:59We are at the all new Sports Bar Mecca
12:04at Thrive City called Splash,
12:06which is open to the public tomorrow.
12:09You've got to check this place out.
12:10We'll tell you more about it coming up next.
12:12Also, claim a spot in the knockout tournament,
12:15which is coming up in early March.
12:17We've been doing it every day.
12:18Today is no different.

12:22and see if you can win your way in.

12:26and we are taking your calls.
