00:57Currently, most gambling events in Thailand are prohibited,
01:00except for certain activities such as horse racing,
01:02which is controlled by the state and the official lottery.
01:04However, illegal gambling such as betting,
01:07and underground gambling activities are still rampant
01:09with large amounts of money transactions.
01:13Neighboring countries such as Cambodia, Singapore,
01:16the Philippines, Laos, and Myanmar
01:18have benefited greatly from their casino complexes.
01:22The Thai government argues that the absence of legal casinos
01:25makes the country lose its opportunity to earn money
01:27and fails to take full advantage of the potential of the tourism sector.
01:31According to Finance Minister Julapun Amorvifat,
01:35this strategic step is projected to increase the number of foreign tourists
01:39by 5% to 10%.
01:41With the income of the tourism sector,
01:43it will increase by around Rp 120 billion to Rp 220 billion,
01:47or equivalent to Rp 54 trillion to Rp 114 trillion.
01:51In addition, around 9,000 to 15,000 new jobs are expected to be created.
01:57However, this legalization effort is not without challenges.
02:01The strong rejection comes from conservative groups in Buddhist majorities
02:05who consider gambling contrary to moral and traditional values.
02:09The previous government has also tried to legalize gambling,
02:12but failed to face the resistance.
